Near the Villa: Only a short drive to traditional markets, such as at Romanesque Elne and medieval Castelnou, but especially good Saturday markets and cultural activities at Ceret and Thuir. Le Boulou has a swimming pool with beautiful mountain backdrop, supermarkets, shops, restaurants, river walk and bars. St Jean Plas de Corts’ lake is good for swimming, picnics, walking, jogging and horse riding. 20 minutes away is cosmopolitan Perpignan with its Catalan culture, evening street entertainment, restaurants, shopping and ambience. Wine caves nearby at Passa, Fourques and hilltop village Banyuls des Aspres.

Closer to Spain are the fishing towns of Collioure, Port Vendres, Banyuls sur Mer and Corbere. Collioure is famed for the birth of Fauvanist art (Picasso/Matisse), its seafood restaurants and it's sheltered coves. Port Vendres is a working fishing town, whilst Banyuls is famous for its aperitifs. Further along this spectacular coast road you enter Spain for the resorts of Portbou and Rosas.

Along the Tech and Tet Valley Roads: The Tech valley takes you through Ceret to spa town Arles sur Tech, to the spectacular George de la Fou for walking, climbing and hiking. Further along are the medieval Prats de Mollo (golf), and Andorra at the Spanish frontier. To the North, the Tet valley takes you through Romanesque Serrabone, Prades (Pablo Casels) and Villefranche de Conflent for caves, petit train jaune and mountain walking. Further along the Gorges de de Caranca, hot springs, lakes, and ski resorts Les Angles and Font Romeu. Also the Capcir woodlands for hiking and Mont Louis the highest part of the Tet, near its source.

About Beverly Wileman-Pratt

My husband James and I love to travel. Europe is one of our favorite areas as one can experience different cultures within a short period of time. Since the late 1990's we were always on vacation looking for a home to buy for when we retire and we finally found it. We live and work in the United States and look forward to the day we can spend three months at a time there.

Beverly Wileman-Pratt purchased this house in 2003

Why Beverly Wileman-Pratt chose Maureillas-las-Illas

This is a solidly built home that sits above the village with commanding views of the Pyrenees. It is a modern home and just the right size for the two of us and guests. It is a five-minute walk into the village which has all the amenities and now our friends. Of course, the fact that it came with a pool to enjoy the hot summer afternoons was a plus.

What makes this house unique

There are several airports close by that are serviced by both the International and budget airlines. We are nestled between the mountains with skiing and the clear blue waters of the Mediterranean. One can enjoy day trips and a wonderful lunch in either Spain or France and the village has everything you need including a pharmacy, dentist, doctor, butcher, bakeries, pubs and a grocery store.

Home away from home

  • 5 of 5

We had a great 3 weeks holiday together with our dogs. It was great to have a garden completely fenched as well as the pool with no access for the dogs. The terrace was great - sitting there we could overlook the lovely town of Maureillas which is at walking distance ! In the evening it was great looking at the sunset and later at all the lights shining in the mountains. House is well equipped; pool kept very clean 2x a week by Bob, the very nice housekeeper who had wonderful tips for sightseeing and restaurants. All in all a place we could definitely recommend.

Pretty Property in small village

  • 3 of 5

Had enjoyable stay at the property, lovely pool and garden area.

The interior was good though needed a good clean .

.As the weather was extremely hot for the time of year, air conditioning would have been a great advantage. 2 fans were supplied on request which did help the situation somewhat.

Lovely village and surrounding area.

Ideal home from home

  • 5 of 5

We had a fabulous holiday at villa Chiapella. The location is excellent for many great trips out, although just staying at the house was my favourite thing! There are a couple of places in the village to have a drink or meal, and a Spar shop for basics within easy walking distance, but less than ten minutes in the car and there are plenty of options. There is also a good vet in Le Boulou if you bring your dog. The villa had everything we wanted for a holiday, a great pool, and the views from the terrace are fantastic! We are already planning our next visit, and we've never stayed in the same place twice before!! Bob was great to deal with and put us at ease straight away, and was at the end of the phone if needed. All in all, a really great place for a holiday.

Very well situated in quiet area on edge of village with wonderful views. Well equipped easy to find

  • 5 of 5

We much enjoyed our stay in this property. It is only a 30-minute or so drive from Perpignan and finding the property on arrival was easy. The house is well equipped and maintained though more suited to four than six people (had we been a party of six we would have given a four-star rating).. The terrace has wonderful, far reaching views over the Pyrenees and we much enjoyed the decent sized pool. As described, the shops in the village are only a few minutes walk - small Spa 'supermarket', good baker, butcher, chemist and the restaurant 10 sur vins was much appreciated. The owner was helpful in providing additional information in advance and Bob, who looks after the property was friendly and helpful.

It was good to be close to the smallish towns of Le Boulou and Ceret only ten minutes drive away. Both have very large supermarkets. Ceret is a very relaxed place to spend time wandering the old narrow streets, enjoying the cafes and restaurants. Its small Museum of Modern Art is not to be missed. We also enjoyed taking the Train Jaune from Villefranche up through the mountains to Montlouis (about an hour's drive) and visiting the Grottes in Villefranche.

We had the quiet and relaxing holiday we hoped for though with Spain nearby as well as the coast it would be easy to keep busy every day.

A true home away from home in a fantastic location

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a wonderful week in Villa Chiapella. The villa is a stylish, comfortable, and well equipped and maintained home, located in a quiet residential area of a charming village. The amenities are exactly as described, and for a family of four, it offered everything that we needed for a superb, memorable holiday. And even though our stay was at a time when we couldn’t take advantage of the outdoor pool, the place offered a fantastic combination of relaxing time and daily trips that everyone enjoyed. It also proved ideal for our son to spend some time preparing for his A level exams, in beautiful, peaceful and comfortable environment, away from the distractions at home.

The location is an excellent base from which to explore beautiful parts of France and Spain. If you are willing to spend a little time in the car, the possibilities are endless.

The short guide of the area provided by the owners was particularly useful to us. With so much to see and do, especially for people who had not been in that part of the world before, those one day trip suggestions saved a lot of research time and contributed to a wonderful experience. We particularly enjoyed Ceret with its restaurants, museums and Saturday market, the picturesque historic town of Collioure, and the towns and villages along the valley of the Tech.

The local agent was very friendly, helpful and accommodating, a pleasure to deal with.

We highly recommend the property as a wonderful, homely family villa in a great location.

Car: recommended

A well equipped comfortable modern home, sleeping four, in the foothills of the Pyrenees. The property enjoys breathtaking views of Mount Canigou which is snow capped from November to May.

Set in its own garden with terraces surrounding the private floodlit swimming pool (8m x 4m), the house offers peace and tranquility and yet is only a two minute walk into the village of Maureillas, where there is a post office, a market, butcher, two bars and wine shops, a restaurant, two patisseries, a pizza shop, a large boules ground and in fact, all the amenities you would require.

The sun kissed Mediterranean beaches are a mere 20 minute drive and the Spanish border, where there is tax free shopping is literally on your doorstep as it is 2 km away. The charming medieval town of Ceret famous for its modern art museum where works of Picasso and others are exhibited is just a 5 minute drive. The Saturday market here being a must visit. The winter ski resorts are an hour and a half away.
