When Slickrock Adventures first moved out to Glover's Reef Atoll off the coast of Belize, our goal was to develop a facility that feels non-developed. Throughout the Caribbean there are very few facilities that are this rustic by design. On Long Caye, development means fifteen cabanas perched right on the water’s edge, a well-stocked kitchen and fantastic menu, solar-powered pumps and lighting, composting toilets, expert guides, three dozen sea kayaks, a bunch of sailboards, surf kayaks, surf boards, fishing kayaks, paddleboards, kiteboarding, a dive shop (the only thing not owned by Slickrock). There is no maid service, air conditioners or flush toilets. Your cell phone won’t work and there’s no internet access. But there is a fridge permanently loaded with Fantas and Belikin beer, private beaches, and great people. It all represents the soft side of adventure travel - right down to the excellent chefs who cook your meal and then sit down at the table with you to dine.
Sea Kayaking: The 80-degree waters of the Caribbean create an unbeatable setting to enjoy the thrills of sea kayaking. No experience is required for this or any of our other activities. Our guides provide instruction covering a full range of kayaking techniques, including paddling strokes, rolling, and rescues. We paddle every day to nearby islands, into the lagoon, or along the reef in search of new snorkeling locations. Skimming over the neon blue water, our boats dodge patch reefs and startle spotted eagle rays, barracuda, and bonefish. We often see porpoise and sea turtles while paddling through the channels into the open sea, where we stop to snorkel from the boats.
Snorkeling: Of all the highlights of your visit to Long Caye, exploring the underwater world will be the most memorable. The pristine reefs of Belize are world-renowned, and those at Glover’s National Marine Reserve are the best in the country. In addition to 700+ patch reefs accessible by kayak, there is outstanding snorkeling on the reef wall just off our shore. The abundance and variety of sea life is astounding, and you could spend a lifetime exploring the coral formations at Glover’s Reef Belize.
Fishing: Although Slickrock’s program emphasizes kayaking, snorkeling, diving, surfing, and windsurfing, fishermen will not be disappointed! There is no need to hire a private guide, you just wade in. The fishing (catch-and-release only) is excellent just off our island; in fact Belizean fishing guides regularly bring their guests over 20 miles by boat just to fish a few feet from our shore. It is common to pull in up to a half-dozen bonefish per session. Many fishermen also spin-cast off of our dock and permit, jack, and barracuda also provide a great deal of excitement. Fishermen can fish any time they like, if you get up early or fish late in the day you won't even miss any of the other activities.
Cully Erdman created Slickrock in 1977, then a small kayak school on the Colorado River. In the early 1980s he expanded to Central America (Belize) after exploring the region while assisting with adventure television shows. In 1986, Lucy Wallingford joined on as a partner, and together they developed the four Belize itineraries that they offer today.

Simply put, there is no place like it on earth. We've wanted to go to another place like it, just to see what it's like to be a guest. We've looked and looked, and seriously, we have not been able to find anything to compare. When the property came up for sale, we were so lucky to be able to buy it.
Honestly, the only way to describe it is the absolute perfect tropical getaway for those who cherish fascinating activity and connecting with nature. If you love glamour and over-the-top luxury, this isn't your place. If you love getting focused attention from skilled guides and being constantly amazed by stunning beauty, mysterious sea creatures, and thrilling water sports, while ensconced in a small bit of paradise, then this is your Shangri La.
If you are only comfotable at a five star hotel, please stay at one, this is not for you! But, if you love total seclusion, no cell phone, no internet, and tons of outdoor fun, then go to Glovers Reef w/Slickrock. The island is just so beautiful! The cabins, restrooms, and showers were very very clean, and much nicer then I expected. The diving is completely amazing! Dove with turtles, baracuda, nurse sharks, stingray, lion fish, parrot fish, scorpion fish, and many, many more. The cabin was right on the water, and I totally loved being lulled to sleep by the sound of the waves. Lucy and Gerrish are wonderful hosts. The staff is always helpful.
If you want to be totally comfortable, and enjoy your trip, be properly prepared! READ everything that they send! They took the time to write it for a reason.
And, diet before you go, because you will gain at least 5 pounds. All food is prepared from scratch, and is incredibly delicious. I would go back, just to eat the food!!!
Stayed April 2013, traveled as a couple
Long Caye with Slickrock is one truly magical adventure. Words, pictures, videos, nothing but being there can do it justice. Nothing compares ....well maybe Bora Bora!
Was there for a week and never wanted to leave.
Great vacation!! We highly recommend Slickrock for a true adventure, one of a kind, vacation!
For kids of all ages...we took our 6 year old and she had the time of her life!
We own Long Caye at Glover's Reef, Belize; an adventure eco-resort. We never have more than 34 guests at a time. We don't use generators, therefore we don't have standard electricity. We are powered by the sun and wind with a little bit of propane thrown in to chill the beer. We don't have flush toilets or heated showers. Our cabanas sit right on the beach, very very private, very exclusive, but not fancy at all. You have to walk to your shared bathroom. No maid stops by your room, ever. At the end of the week when you leave, the boss cleans it for the next person. We have the best collection, without any competition at all, of sports gear in the country. We have expert, enthusiastic guides and we teach and guide sea kayaking, snorkeling, scuba diving, windsurfing, kayak surfing, kayak fishing, stand-up paddling, and board surfing. You can snorkel right off shore. The diving at Glover's Reef is the best in the country.
Other Activities: surf kayaking, paddleboarding, kitesurfing, kayak fishing
