A renovated chalet-style home, maintaining its original Maine-woods character. The dining and living areas overlook Haycock Harbor, part of Downeast Maine's Bold Coast. The kitchen offers the convenience of a dishwasher and is fully equipped down to the lobster pot. The house has 2 bedrooms, one on the main floor and one upstairs, each w/a queen size bed, as well as a full-size sleeper-sofa in the loft. The loft offers a TV w/satellite-DVD, a built-in desk and shelves provide lots of space for your beach-combing finds. The main floor has one full bathroom, separate laundry room w/a washer and dryer, iron and ironing board. The house sits back some 100 yards from the ocean's bold coast. Be the first in the US to see the sun rise while enjoying your morning coffee from the wrap around deck. From the comfort of the Adirondack chairs or the built-in deck seating, witness the northern skies' Milky Way, spectacular sunsets, soaring eagles, fluttering hummingbirds and other wildlife.
Deb and Jerry's Chalet was the perfect location and fit for an incredible week! The chalet provided amazing views both inside and out and outfitted with everything you could possibly need and more. Whether we were relaxing at the chalet or going on one of the many hikes, we found the location, view and atmosphere to be a perfect fit for our family. The chalet was neat and clean and set up well for a family. We explored the near by beach and harbor and spent time skipping stones, fishing, and just watching the lobster boats pass. We even saw a spectacular fireworks display!
We have been going to Lubec every year now since 2006 and the chalet is probably our favorite destination thus far. There is so much to do and see near by, one week just isn't enough. Our family had a blast hiking, exploring, watching the seals, whales, porpoises, and eagles, seeing local sites and shops. It was a wonderful week and we're hoping to get back this fall. Be sure to check out Deb and Jerry's shop "Northern Tides" as well for great Maine products, excursion advice, or even for a little friendly conversation.
Thanks Deb and Jerry for a spectacular week!
Overall, this is a wonderful place to spend a quiet, relaxing vacation. The owners and locals are very welcoming and the location is beautiful. The only downside to this location is that there are limited selection for eating out and shopping. Also, you cannot access the water from the house (not really waterfront). There is water behind the house, but you cannot get to it. There is a small, private beach down the road that you can access, but the other homeowners that have access also were not very welcoming. Jerry and his wife were very sorry for the inconvenience, but it made it difficult to enjoy the water. Just an FYI - if traveling in August, the weather is very cool and not too warm to swim :)
The house was spotless and exactly as advertised. Contact with the owners was easily established. You can walk to the beach roughly 1/2 mile away; it's further down the gravel road and VERY quiet; you will likely have it to yourself. We watched seals from that beach! As we arrived, a bald eagle flew over; one of many we got to see right from the house. I had specifically asked about stargazing; the night sky was the best I've ever seen, and we were able to watch over 20 meteorites in an hour! The nights were SILENT; those looking for a quiet time away will be well-rewarded. We went to Campobello Island, took a puffin cruise with Bold Coast Charters, and ventured up to New Brunswick several times, including to take a whale watch out of St. Andrews By The Sea (an adorable town!). I took it as a personal mission to compare/contrast every lobster roll in the area! This property was perfect for my husband and myself.
Jerry & Deb,
Not much to say that I haven't said in the previous 4 trips but here goes. Absolutely loved our trip again this year. This was the second year we brought our parents with us and they've fallen in love with it up there just like we have.
It gets harder and harder to leave every year. It's just amazing up there, the house is wonderfully relaxing, great views from the deck, etc. We miss it terribly and are already planning next year's trip. I can't say enough good things about our time spent there. We're hoping in the future we might be able to stay 2 weeks as 1 just isn't enough.
Thanks for another great week!
We were hesitant to take a long car ride with 3 small children and rent a house but we were so happy we took on the challenge! The kids were even more excited with their "new home" than we were. So peaceful, comfortable, clean, homey-all with amazing views all day every day. Jerry and Debbie were so helpful leading up to our visit, and the house had everything we needed! It truly was like having a home away on vacation. We were so sad when our week was over. The kids still talk about "our house" in Maine!! Thank you for such a wonderful stay!!
This is almost a perfect dream house for our vacation, providing exactly (more than exactly) what we want - complete tranquility and privacy, away from people (yet the drive to town only takes 15 minutes), beautiful scenery, viewing the starry sky including the milky way (depends on weather), seeing wild animals (we saw birds and hares), short walk to beach (though a rocky beach), comfortable home (bed, rooms, kitchen), spacious living area with natural lighting and unobstructed view, a large sundeck. What's more, the hosts are very friendly and helpful. No regret if you are looking for such vacation homes. A week is too short for us. Advice: Make sure to arrive before sunset!
This chalet is nestled in the coastal woods of Downeast Maine, within 15 minutes of the West Quoddy Lighthouse, the easternmost point of the US, and within 20 minutes of Lubec. Lubec is best known as the gateway to Campobello Island, home of FDR’s famous summer retreat, now an international park, and East Quoddy Lighthouse. This small coastal village offers grocery shopping, a bank/ATM, post office, hardware store, a few eateries and small shops in which to browse. Lubec is home to the Summer Keys adult music program, and the Plein Aire artists. Enjoy listening to live musicians practice throughout town, observe artists painting, or simply watch the seals floric in the Lubec narrows.
Lubec's Festival By The Sea is held in September. 25 minutes south is Machias, home of the Blueberry Festival in August. 40 minutes north is Eastport, ME, home of the Salmon Festival in September, another 25 minutes north of Eastport is Calais, home the International Festival in August.
Other Activities: 4 Light Houses, puffin tours, whale watching, bog and coastal tours
