Big Bend Getaway - Views, Comfort and Style - 10 Min to Pool !

Bedrooms 1
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 - 3 nights

About the property

House, 1 Bedroom + Den, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

This custom adobe vacation rental home is the perfect 'getaway' when visiting the Big Bend. Located on 40 acres and at the end of a long drive, the Big Bend Getaway provides seclusion and privacy. Furnished in a western style with modern flair, the house is built for comfort and relaxation indoors and out. Thick adobe walls and efficient heat and air keep it cozy in any type of weather. The large front porch and screened dining porch provide shade from the heat and protection from flying insects. The carport will protect your car from desert sun and storms. The main bedroom has a queen bed and its own AC and heater for a perfect night's sleep. The kitchen is equipped with everything you would typically need to prepare and serve most meals. Enjoy your meals in the rock floored dining room or on the dining porch. Relax in the comfortable living room, the semi-private den, one of the porches, around the fire circle, or on the double hammock. If you need a second bed, we'll fold out the queen size futon in the den.

We can comfortably lodge four adults on a queen bed and queen futon. Dogs are also welcome. While we typically limit occupancy to four people, we can accommodate up to five if some are small children. Just let us know so we can make sure you will all be comfortable. If you have a larger group, consider renting the multiple homes. Terlingua Ranch Retreat, LTM Ranch, and Ringtail Cabin are all just a short drive away.

We recommend bringing a good book, or select one from our bookshelves, many about Terlingua and the Big Bend region. Just kick back and enjoy the solitude inside or out. Of course, there are lots of other activities to keep your stay busy and exciting. Watch the abundant birds, wildlife, and desert plant life on our twenty acres or as you walk, bike, or drive along the hundreds of miles of dirt and rock roads of the 200,000 acre Terlingua Ranch. Sign in at the Terlingua Ranch Lodge and hike along the remote and breathtaking trails through the Christmas Mountains. Enjoy a refreshing swim in the cool and inviting Terlingua Ranch pool (just six miles down the road). Visit Big Bend National Park (just 30 minutes to the west gate) or Big Bend Ranch State Park (just 45 minutes to the Barton Warnock Visitor Center). Enjoy meals, drinks, live music and more at the various restaurants and bars in the area. Sit out at night to watch the stars, tell tall tales, or enjoy a small fire. Drive along some of the most scenic roads in Texas. Raft or canoe down the Rio Grande. Enjoy a guided horseback ride or jeep tour through the rugged west Texas landscape.

With so many options, you can return home as relaxed or exhausted as you choose. Either way, you'll “getaway” from everyday life and bring back countless memories.

About Janet Eby

A human rights attorney, an anthropologist, a creative director and a radio personality got together one weekend for an 8 hour road trip from Austin to Terlingua – their destination ¬– the fantasy hideaway called “The Big Bend Getaway.”

After experiencing the breadth and freedom that the Big Bend area exudes, they decided to buy this little gem. Watching the full moon rise over Sombrero Mountain that summer evening sealed the deal.

We hope you’ll be taken with the magic of “The Getaway” as much as we were.

Experience the freedom in feeling small!

Why Janet Eby chose Big Bend

Located in the heart of Big Bend country, but secluded away from the nearby communities and public parks. The Getaway strikes the perfect balance between tourist hot spot and remote retreat. We even have WiFi internet to keep connected with the outside world.

What makes this house unique

Quiet, quiet, quiet. Birds, deer, javelinas. Views, stars, walks and drives down the scenic Terlingua Ranch roads, hikes up Christmas Mountains, swimming in Terlingua Ranch pool, grilling out, relaxing on the porch, trips into Big Bend National Park, restaurants, bars & live music in Terlingua. Mostly, just relaxing and 'getting away' from day to day stresses and routines.

Perfect little house in the middle of nowhere (which is exactly what I wanted)! Beautiful views, lots of good books, everything you need except food. Screened-in porch with a view probably my favorite part.

Relaxing Getaway near Big Bend

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed here for a long weekend getaway. We spent a day enjoying the immediate area & Terlingua and a day in Big Bend National Park; this was conveniently situated for both.

I researched many options in the area before booking, and I'm convinced that this is one of the best deals I could find (considering that it still has many modern/"on-the-grid" amenities). The place is even better in person than it is online! I'll echo what many others have said in that our stay was very comfortable and we had everything we needed. We're already talking about returning later this year!

Beautiful oasis in the desert!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I booked this house for my 30th birthday weekend getaway, and it was the perfect peaceful place for it! The house was clean and the kitchen and bath stocked well (better than most rentals I've booked on Airbnb or Homeaway). The directions were great and Darryl stopped by the first morning we were there to check and refill the rainwater collection tank while also giving us directions to Big Bend and his favorite hiking trails to check out. The screened in porch and chairs on the front deck were great for the morning sunrises over the mountains and evenings playing cards.

The only negatives for us was the bed in the bedrooms, it is very low to the ground and not a great mattress. We ended up switching to the futon on our 3rd night which was much more comfortable to sleep on. Also the motion light on the porch was not functioning properly at the time, but that wasn't a big deal. We loved our time at the "getaway" and hope to be back in the future!

Thanks for a great stay!

Beautiful and Relaxing

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four had a wonderful trip to Big Bend and this cabin was one of the highlights! We loved sitting on the porch to watch the sunrise and sunset each day while our two kids explored. It was the perfect jumping off spot for both the national and state parks or just staying at the cabin to escape the hustle and bustle of life. I would highly recommend this rental to family and friends and we hope to be able to stay again sometime!

Excellent rental in a beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

This place is fantastic and highly recommend it to anyone thinking of going to the Big Bend area. My wife and I stayed over labor day weekend and had a fantastic time. The house is great, up-to-date and very functional. They have everything you might need including a mean looking telescope which I could not figure out.

Super easy logistics getting in and out of the place.

We'll be back.

Oasis in the Chihuahuan Desert

  • 5 of 5

A disparate divergence from our typical car or tent camping in West Texas, we stayed at the Big Bend Getaway to escape the heat and do some mountain biking and hiking. This house is AMAZING, to the point that my girlfriend (now fiance) and I wondered (a) how could we buy a place like this, (b) why would we ever camp again (and perhaps we are getting old), and (c) will a positive review preclude us from ever renting again due to popularity. In all seriousness, this is an amazing, simple, and well-designed house with beautiful vistas and excellent porch space, sited on a wonderful property. In a vast landscape with long travel times, this property is perfectly situated between Alpine, Study Butte/Terlingua, BBSP, BBNP, and Marathon. The pool at the ranch house was great. Wonderful books and games at the house. We arrived via Alpine, stopping at Big Bend Brewing Company, traveled down to Lajitas, BBSP, Terlingua, and BBNP, and then departed via Marathon Rd. through Marathon for lunch and site seeing. Janet was wonderful to deal with and very responsive. Everything was great, and I cannot more highly recommend this place. I hope we will be back in the near future!

The Getaway offers a great home base for exploring Big Bend National Park, Terlingua Ghost Town and the Rio Grande River. However, don't overlook the opportunities that are a little closer to the house.

The hundreds of miles of Terlingua Ranch roads provide endless opportunities for walking, biking, or scenic drives, just don’t leave the road once off the Getaway property. This is all private land.

The Terlingua Ranch pool and Christmas Mountains trailhead are just 10 minutes away. Check in at the Ranch office to for access to either. The Bad Rabbit Cafe is also at the Ranch headquarters. The food is great and they often have live music on week-end evenings.

A short drive to Terlingua/Study Butte or the Terlingua Ghost Town offers restaurants, bars, live music, occasional live theatre. River guides, jeep tours, and horseback riding are also available in Terlingua.

Or, just relax in the hammock with your favorite book.
