Texas House Rental Photos and Description

House, 1 Bedroom + Den, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

This custom adobe vacation rental home is the perfect 'getaway' when visiting the Big Bend. Located on 40 acres and at the end of a long drive, the Big Bend Getaway provides seclusion and privacy. Furnished in a western style with modern flair, the house is built for comfort and relaxation indoors and out. Thick adobe walls and efficient heat and air keep it cozy in any type of weather. The large front porch and screened dining porch provide shade from the heat and protection from flying insects. The carport will protect your car from desert sun and storms. The main bedroom has a queen bed and its own AC and heater for a perfect night's sleep. The kitchen is equipped with everything you would typically need to prepare and serve most meals. Enjoy your meals in the rock floored dining room or on the dining porch. Relax in the comfortable living room, the semi-private den, one of the porches, around the fire circle, or on the double hammock. If you need a second bed, we'll fold out the queen size futon in the den.

We can comfortably lodge four adults on a queen bed and queen futon. Dogs are also welcome. While we typically limit occupancy to four people, we can accommodate up to five if some are small children. Just let us know so we can make sure you will all be comfortable. If you have a larger group, consider renting the multiple homes. Terlingua Ranch Retreat, LTM Ranch, and Ringtail Cabin are all just a short drive away.

We recommend bringing a good book, or select one from our bookshelves, many about Terlingua and the Big Bend region. Just kick back and enjoy the solitude inside or out. Of course, there are lots of other activities to keep your stay busy and exciting. Watch the abundant birds, wildlife, and desert plant life on our twenty acres or as you walk, bike, or drive along the hundreds of miles of dirt and rock roads of the 200,000 acre Terlingua Ranch. Sign in at the Terlingua Ranch Lodge and hike along the remote and breathtaking trails through the Christmas Mountains. Enjoy a refreshing swim in the cool and inviting Terlingua Ranch pool (just six miles down the road). Visit Big Bend National Park (just 30 minutes to the west gate) or Big Bend Ranch State Park (just 45 minutes to the Barton Warnock Visitor Center). Enjoy meals, drinks, live music and more at the various restaurants and bars in the area. Sit out at night to watch the stars, tell tall tales, or enjoy a small fire. Drive along some of the most scenic roads in Texas. Raft or canoe down the Rio Grande. Enjoy a guided horseback ride or jeep tour through the rugged west Texas landscape.

With so many options, you can return home as relaxed or exhausted as you choose. Either way, you'll “getaway” from everyday life and bring back countless memories.

About Janet Eby

A human rights attorney, an anthropologist, a creative director and a radio personality got together one weekend for an 8 hour road trip from Austin to Terlingua – their destination ¬– the fantasy hideaway called “The Big Bend Getaway.”

After experiencing the breadth and freedom that the Big Bend area exudes, they decided to buy this little gem. Watching the full moon rise over Sombrero Mountain that summer evening sealed the deal.

We hope you’ll be taken with the magic of “The Getaway” as much as we were.

Experience the freedom in feeling small!

Joe, Shannon, Giuseppe and Renée

Why Janet Eby chose Texas

Located in the heart of Big Bend country, but secluded away from the nearby communities and public parks. The Getaway strikes the perfect balance between tourist hot spot and remote retreat. We even have WiFi internet to keep connected with the outside world.

What makes this house unique

Quiet, quiet, quiet. Birds, deer, javelinas. Views, stars, walks and drives down the scenic Terlingua Ranch roads, hikes up Christmas Mountains, swimming in Terlingua Ranch pool, grilling out, relaxing on the porch, trips into Big Bend National Park, restaurants, bars & live music in Terlingua. Mostly, just relaxing and 'getting away' from day to day stresses and routines.

What a fantastic house the Big Bend Getaway proved to be. My husband and I spent 5 nights at this delightful adobe as part of our birding holiday to Texas and Arizona. We'd had several days in Arizona to acclimatise to the difference in temperatures from the UK but May in the Big Bend area was another step up. The 'Getaway' however is an oasis of peace and shade in the usually 90+ degree temperatures with one day getting as high as 103!

In addition to the fabulous surrounding scenery we had lots of excellent, close up views of the birds that live around the property as well as the local jack rabbit that hopped gently around the grounds. Luckily no snakes or scorpions were seen. The birding in the Park was excellent and we would recommend the Sam Nail Ranch trail as a good place to visit.

I would heartily recommend this rental property as it gives a high level of comfort in quite a remote area, with the furnishings being simple but sophisticated and in tune with the environment. On the last day of our stay it was cool enough (88 degrees) for my husband to venture up the Boot Canyon Trail in the Park to successfully find the Colima Warbler that he had come to see. The last night had a bit of added excitement when there was a power cut because of storms in the area but this just gave an air of mystery to the house as we managed by candlelight. What a fantastic place. As you Americans say, it was awesome. Visit and enjoy.

Awesome Little House In A Beautiful Area

  • 5 of 5

We loved our week at the Big Bend Getaway. The house was clean, comfortable, and had everything we needed for our week of adventure and relaxation. The views from the Getaway are spectacular, and there is a lot of surrounding property to explore. The sunrises from the front porch will have you up every morning to get a jump on your day!

We ventured into Big Bend National Park on most days to do some hiking - - the entrance was about a 45 minute drive from the Getaway. However, we enjoyed our time at the Getaway so much, we spent a whole day just lounging around the property.

Definitely a great house that is worth staying in!

Fantastic Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My husband, our dog, and I just returned from an amazing visit to the Big Bend Getaway. It was so beautiful and quiet out there. The pictures of the place don't do it justice. They have anything and everything you might need. We actually brought too much stuff. This house is sort of in the middle of no where BUT while driving around I am not certain you can find a nicer, more affordable place out there. We are already planning our return.

While we were there we visited Big Bend, Terlingua and Lajitas. This place is perfectly situated.

Big Bend Getaway

  • 5 of 5

What a perfect place! The owners of this property thought of everything you could ever need during your stay. I brought a bunch of stuff I didn't even need during my stay.

The only thing to be aware of is the distance to the parks, the ghost town, and Lajitas. This place is a bit of a drive, but overall I really loved the seclusion.

Big Views & Serenity

  • 5 of 5

Our only regret is that we only had 3 days there. The home is clean, extremely well appointed, and the screened in porch is an awesome place to be in the mornings and evenings. It is a great home base for exploring Big Bend National Park, which has a rugged magnificence. The owners provided a great writeup before our visit with so much helpful information, then the cabin was full of literature with everything you could want to know about the area. It is private without feeling isolated. Truly a great place just to BE.

Best Getaway Ever

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed here in for 5 nights in early September. Pictures don't do it justice. The views and beauty on this property are incredible. I think its the best spot in Terlingua Ranch. The house is comfortable, clean, and well-stocked so you don't have to leave for unexpected items. We enjoyed the large porch for sitting with out wine and enjoying the views and watching the jackrabbits, road runners, and deer roam the property. THE STARS ARE AMAZING OUT THERE. But be weary of snakes; they really do come out at night. We came a little too close to a rattler one night. It was also convenient to have the little country store down the road for food items we didn't bring in our cooler (ice cream). It is a scenic and pleasant drive to Big Bend and close to the ghost town. We will definitely be coming back!

The Getaway offers a great home base for exploring Big Bend National Park, Terlingua Ghost Town and the Rio Grande River. However, don't overlook the opportunities that are a little closer to the house.

The hundreds of miles of Terlingua Ranch roads provide endless opportunities for walking, biking, or scenic drives, just don’t leave the road once off the Getaway property. This is all private land.

The Terlingua Ranch pool and Christmas Mountains trailhead are just 10 minutes away. Check in at the Ranch office to for access to either. The Bad Rabbit Cafe is also at the Ranch headquarters. The food is great and they often have live music on week-end evenings.

A short drive to Terlingua/Study Butte or the Terlingua Ghost Town offers restaurants, bars, live music, occasional live theatre. River guides, jeep tours, and horseback riding are also available in Terlingua.

Or, just relax in the hammock with your favorite book.
