'we LOVED your house at Lewes': Letter From September 7, 2007

Hi Seth, I just want to let you know how much we LOVED your house at Lewes. My Mom absolutely adored it, and didn't want to leave. Neither did the rest of us. It was so homey and comfortable and we looked forward to returning home every night!

It was truly our best family vacation. We all fell in love with Lewes itself, and I thought Cape Henlopen was fantastic. I also want to thank you for the wonderful suggestions on places to go and things to do. It was so helpful. We had breakfast at the bookstore cafe, my Mom loved Cafe Azafran, and we had a great meal at Striper Bites.

We also ate at home for a few breakfasts and dinners, and the kitchen made it a snap. We put in a reservation for the same week next summer, but we might be interested in renting a different week or even possibly an additional week. Please let us know when you start thinking about booking reservations for next year.

Thanks again so much. Best wishes, E.S. & Family

A Home Away From Home: My family and I lived abroad for many years in Switzerland.

When we traveled abroad we always rented individual

properties because we are a family of six. Hotels were too

expensive and divded our family. We rented through the

internet but were never sure what we were getting ourselves

into. We never experienced a horrible situation but there

were some that could have been better. When we returned to

the US we just continued the tradition of renting via the

internet. Last summer I chose Lewes, DE as our base location

for our family vacation. On a vacation website I saw the 109

Jefferson listing. Sure it mentioned that it was a charming

cottage, in a historic district with a stunning sunroom, but I

was hesitant to believe what I read. The pictures looked nice

so we once again took a gamble and rented the property.

This place was the nicest, cleanest, comfortable place we ever

stayed in. Not only is it beautifully decorated and spot clean

but it feel

'Great location and great house': My mom, sisters, and I stayed here for three days in May and had a fabulous time! The house was perfect for us! The three beds were comfortable and the bathrooms were clean. The kitchen was great for hanging out and relaxing. The sun room was a special treat, perfect for relaxing with some coffee in the morning. The living room was amazing with the most stunning heart pine floors I've ever seen! The house was perfectly located in easy walking distance to the shops and restaurants on 2nd St. The beach is walkable too, but we drove with all of our chairs and coolers and stuff. All in all, a great house in a great location!

About Seth Morris - Emails Promptly Returned

My wife and I purchased the property in 2005 and completely renovated and expanded the house over 2005-2006. We added many new windows, refinished the 1850s pine floors, added a new heating/ac system, updated the kitchen, and built a gorgeous new sun room that is the favorite part of the house for our guests.

We have stayed in 5 Home Aways, this was our worst experience. The house was comfortable but lacked a welcoming touch. There has always been a manual to show basic house operations , like the stove, dishwasher, and the TV non at this house. The lock on the back door was so tricky that we slept with the door unlocked until we could figure out how to lock it. The Wi Fi was very slow, plugs in the kitchen didn't work, there were dust bunnies under the bed. Usually there is sugar, flour, basic staples left, not much here.

Owner's Response: My wife and I feel bad that Phyllis was unhappy, and even more disappointed that we learned about this well after the fact, and didn’t have the chance to call her on the phone after check-in to make it right. A 2-minute call to the 24/7 management office would have lead to phone instructions and/or a visit from a handyman to fix all the issues on day one – and we would have been notified as well. In the past, we’ve returned some monies, sent champagne and chocolates, bought dinners, and taken other steps to make our guests happy DURING their stay. Most owners are good at turning lemons into lemonade given the chance. Before reading the review, our cleaner contacted us after this checkout about a black footprint left on our new white sofa slipcover, necessitating deep dry cleaning. Our cleaner also emailed us photos of how every single drawer and cabinet in every room – including every drawer and cabinet in every piece of furniture in the entire house was pulled out or left wide open. Our cleaner took care of the dust bunnies under the bed and promises us this will not be an issue with future renters. Regarding the lock, (and every other issue) a 2-minute call on day one to the 24/7 management company would solved that problem in a few seconds. Regarding the “slow Wifi,” the only feedback we’ve ever had is how blazingly fast it is. We were there last weekend and measured 25 Mbps/5Mbps, which is smoking. The only plug in the kitchen that “didn’t work” was a single GFI (to prevent shock) switch by the sink and you just press the button and it works fine. I asked the office if we need to stock sugar, coffee, flour etc., and they said no. In nearly 10 years of renting our home to our guests, we’ve never had anyone complain about stocking food in the pantry, or needing a manual to operate our basic stove, dishwasher, and TV. A heartfelt request to future renters (of any property, not just ours) is to please let the owner and/or management company know about any issues at the beginning, so they have a chance to make you happy so you can spend your vacation being happy and enjoying life.

Started our summer perfectly

  • 5 of 5

My family had the pleasure of staying in your home the very first week of our summer break this year and it was perfect. We have stayed in Lewes for years and adore the town and now your home. There was enough space for all of us to be comfortable and the sunroom and kitchen were perfect for everyone to have a meal and play games. I am so hoping that we can stay again in 2012 - I wish I could stay all summer :-)

November Birthday Celebration

  • 5 of 5

A vacation I will always treasure. My children rented the house for my 60th Birthday Celebration over the Thanksgiving Holiday. Since they all live in different states it was a wonderful celebration as a family. We all absolutely LOVED the house. It was decorated beautifully and had everyhthing you need, we cooked a complete turkey dinner and enjoyed it around the table in the beautiful sun room. The house was spacious which allowed for everyone to spend time together or have some alone reading time. Although it was November we enjoyed walking time, a little beach time, some great meals, and this house made it a cozy, intimate family time. The town of Lewes is a sweet place with very friendly people. This was a vacation I will never forget.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for the wonderful feedback. My wife and I bring the kids to Lewes as often as possible and we always try to improve the house any way we can. We've also been very lucky to have such wonderful guests that treat our house even more carefully than we do. As an owner, your comments really validate all the hard work we've invested in renovating, maintaining, and improving our 1850s house. Thank you very much and we're always honored when people want to spend time in our house.

Lewes, Delaware was named one of America's Dozen Distinctive Destinations, an annual list of unique and lovingly preserved communities in the United States by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and is a great place for history buffs. Our house is in the historic district three short blocks from downtown. Take a walking tour of our excellent museums and learn about the visit of Captain Kidd, War of Independence, War of 1812, and the creation of Lewes as a whaling town by the Dutch in the early 1600s. .

We're only 1 mile from Cape Henlopen State Park -- a 5200-acre nature reserve at the confluence of Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean with beautiful, non-commercial ocean beaches.
