Top floor apartment in prime location between city centre and main tourist zone

Originally occupied by the family who owned the historic Savoy Hotel before selling to developers prior to its demolition, this apartment is full of period furniture, paintings and prints that take you back to the "original" Madeira - you can just feel the history! Spacious three-bedroom accommodation with three balconies and two bathrooms, plus access to a huge roof terrace with views through 360 degrees from the ocean to the south to the mountains inland. The location is one of the best, with Funchal city centre being a gentle 10-15 minute stroll or two minutes by taxi or high-frequency bus. Being slightly to the west of the bay of Funchal, the microclimate here is much sunnier than central Funchal – in the opposite direction a ten-minute walk takes you to the main tourist zone where most of the large hotels are located. The actual location is very private, with an excellent small local café beneath the exclusive four-storey development. Being on the top floor there are no neighbours above, so the apartment is very quiet with views from every window.

In the immediate vicinity there are lots of local cafes, shops and even a couple of English style “pubs”, whilst there are restaurants to cater for every taste. There is cable television and free high-speed Wi-Fi is available throughout the apartment. A space in the private car park is allocated for guests who hire a car.

NOTE: In September 2015 the cable connection to this apartment was upgraded to super-fast 100Mbps (sufficient for streaming live TV on laptops and tablets/iPads) and the number of cable channels increased to 129.

NOTE: As of Autumn 2017 construction work is taking place to the south/south east of the apartment - some views can be disrupted by cranes. This has been reflected in a major reduction in prices until this development is finished.

Great roof terrace

We had a great stay here - very, very good value for six persons - a tenth of the price of a hotel. The apartment has access to a roof terrace which none of the other tenants used, but only a couple of sun loungers in the apartment. Sun all day. The building work was nearby but we were warned about this and the price adjusted to compensate. Everything clean and well presented. Great cafe below and just a short walk into Funchal at night. Recommended for anybody on a budget.

Incredible value

We were warned about building work nearby, but it was nowhere near as bad as we had expected. Actually the price reduction more than compensated for the couple of cranes that could be admired from the balcony. Apartment quirky, but loved the decor. Everything there that we needed.. Recommended at this price!

Owner's Response: We have made the apartment extremely good value for money whilst the new hotel is being completed along the road. The work has largely moved inside now so there is little disturbance to speak of now - we still have kept the low pricing regardless for a short period.

Clean and well presented

Very helpful manager - good communication beforehand. Apartment as described. Location excellent - just 10 minutes into town (uphill, so a little longer coming back after a couple of beers and a meal!). Recommended

Good value

Really liked this apartment which is in an handy position for a short walk into Funchal. We didn't find the construction of the large hotel nearby to be a problem - as the advert says rates have been reduced whilst the work goes on - and we were on a tight budget. The building phase will presumably diminish as the appear to be moving towards completion, with some very expensive landscaping being installed. Excellent cafe below - incredible value compared to some of the others just 100 metres away.

Nice appartment but.....

We are a couple that booked this appartment. Do not be fooled by the picture of Reids Hotel which is way in the distance and has nothing to do with this rental apartment which is in a block of apartments up a very steep hill. It is located next to very busy, very noisy roads. The 'vista' from the lounge window is in fact the construction site of the new Savoy Palace Hotel. Sadly this blocks out the sea view but you can still see the sea left and right.

Communictaion was poor at the outset, we had to ask three times for the address of the apartment. On the day of our arrival we sent SMS to agent asking if we could arrive early with our luggage, no reply!

The apartment is very spacious and light. Furnished with antique style furniture and fittings which we liked. The apartment is 'dated' and there are issues with hot water flow but it all works eventually.

On arrival, we wanted a drink so went to cupboard to be greeted with four mugs, one with a broken handle and another with a chip on the lip. Not impressive. No sharp kitchen utility knives. The bedroom and hand towels towels worn and stained ( but clean). We would ask the owners to invest our rental on these small issues.

TV has many channels and fridge freezer very efficient.

Biggest issue was the noise. No sound insulation at all and the traffic noise constant. The local music kicks off early and ends late. Madiera is a beautiful place, hot and it would be nice to have the windows open but then you cannot sleep. The property description says the apartment is quiet. In fact and be aware, it could not be noisier. It is quiet as far as neighbours are concerned only, we saw no one all week.

All sounds negative but it is an honest review and we would loved to have rated it higher. We wish the owners sucess for the future rentals.

We do, however, beg to differ on a number of points: The new hotel construction has impacted on the view to the east of the apartment only - we have specifically mentioned this in the description of the apartment, and we have reduced the price considerably to compensate for this. Noise: you are in a central location in what is quite a large city, where any apartment, expensive or "value" as this one, will necessarily have background road noise. There were additional cups and mugs which you must have failed to locate - in fact there is almost too much china! The towels were replaced recently so should be perfect. With regard to SMS we have no record of having received one from you on the day of arrival, but always request that guests correspond by means of e-mail which is continually monitored. We normally allow early arrivals if there is nobody moving out the same day.

Great apt, great views very spacious..wifi, Sky tv. Lovely roof terrace.

Great apartment, yes a little dated but had everything in it. Great location buses to get everywhere just a min away. A walk downhill to main centre. Nearby was Forum shopping centre, Formosa beach, coastal walks, and around the corner from Moynihans bar/restaurant.

Rita/housekeeper was very helpful ..we enjoyed our stay.

A number of improvements had been made to the apartment immediately prior to your stay and these have hopefully improved the facilities considerably - new pillows, towels, fridge, extractor and lots of decorative improvements. The arrangements for cleaning such a large apartment have also been changed and hopefully this is being noticed. On top of all this the prices have been reduced whilst the building work is being completed at the hotel development between the apartment and the city centre - incredibly good value for three double bedrooms on the top floor!
