About the property

Ideal base for cycling, walking, wildlife observation & D-Day history

The cottage is freshly renovated in a clean modern style that conserves original features, such as the huge stone fireplace, ancient elm beams and limestone and cob walls. Ideal for a couple, there is spacious living accommodation for two people, well-equipped with modern comforts and conveniences. It is an ideal base for a peaceful and relaxing holiday cycling, walking, exploring wildlife, beaches, Norman cuisine and the history of World War II and the D-Day Normandy landings. Brecourt Manor and Carentan, sites of the famous battles, are close by.

There is a spacious sitting room (4.5mx5.5m) with vaulted ceiling, large stone fireplace with woodburning stove and ancient, elm beams. There is a separate, good-sized dining kitchen (3mx5.5m), double bedroom with ensuite shower-room with toilet and handbasin, shaver point and heated towel rail. There are a laundry and further toilet and washbasin off the kitchen.

Equipment includes full-size cooker, washing machine with tumble dryer, dishwasher, microwave, fridge-freezer, kettle, filter coffee-maker, toaster, blender, iron, ironing board, hairdryer, 32” flatscreen TV with UK satellite channels, DVD player and broadband WIFI free-of-charge.

Within 5 minutes drive are sandy beaches, including the famous Utah Beach, wetlands nature reserves, long walks, cycle paths on the flat, fishing, museums and historic sites, restaurants, shops, chateaux and ancient churches.

Busy weekly markets, harbours, marinas and more shops and museums are in the nearby towns of Carentan and Ste Mère Eglise and the charming fishing villages, St Vaast La Houge and Barfleur. Omaha, Juno and Gold beaches, Mont Saint Michel, Barneville-Carteret, Bayeux, Cherbourg, Rouen and Caen and the American, British and German WWII cemeteries are all in easy driving distance.

Le Marronnier is next door to a small, traditional, working dairy farm with horses, chickens and ducks. The (English) owners are next door and on-hand to help and advise as required. French is also spoken.

The village of Ste Marie du Mont is 2 miles away and has bakeries, grocery shops, a butchery/charcuterie selling local produce, prize-winning artisanal pates and sausages, wet fish shops selling locally caught fish and seafood including the local moules and oysters, restaurants (where one can eat moules frites), a mediaeval church (with extraordinary renaissance tower), bar tabacs, hairdressers and a doctor's surgery.

Car ferries are available from Portsmouth and Poole to Cherbourg, Caen-Ouistreham and Le Havre. The cottage is easily accessible by car from the ferry ports by fast, dual carriageways:

* 38 minutes from Cherbourg car ferry

* 70 minutes from Caen-Ouistreham car ferry

A wonderfully comfortable & welcoming cottage & hosts

  • 5 of 5

My husband & I stayed at Le Marronier during the 2016 DDay celebration activities. Steve & Rosemary were such charming & helpful hosts. We arrived on a Saturday evening so we had arranged for Rosemary to purchase us a few breakfast necessities which she most competently did. We were all set then for a lovely stay in the cottage they had themselves restored. We loved the DDay celebrations in all the little villages nearby & the cottage location allowed such convenience in driving to various activities & then coming "home" to a lovely quiet space where we could fix a mesl, enjoy a nap, or sit by the fire on a windy cold day. Our hosts were always available to answer our questions or reset my IPhone when I didn't know how. They kept lots of maps & area info in the cottage for guests. The location is close to all the villages & museums & beaches but is so,quiet & peaceful in a flower- filled garden setting. This stay was truly the highlight of our 2016 Europe trip, we recommend it most highly to any visitors, & plan to return in 2017.

Le Marronier - a wonderful home!

  • 5 of 5

We recently stayed at this lovely home and can’t say enough great things about our visit. Although we arrived much later than we expected, the owners, Steve and Rosemary, were there to greet us at the door and had anticipated we might need a few provisions to hold us over until we could get to a market ourselves. They had provided us with eggs, cheese, wine, a baguette, coffee, tea and creamer!

The accommodations were so comfortable and the kitchen had all the small appliances you could need. Steve and Rosemary spend quite a bit of time on the yard and gardens and they are just beautiful. A seating area is available for relaxing in this beautiful setting.

It is located only 2 miles from Utah Beach and the Memorial Museum and only 1 mile from the town center. We were fortunate enough to be there for D Day celebrations and the town was transformed into a scene from 1944! Citizens from all over celebrate the liberation by donning old military uniforms, pitching pup tents, women and child dress in 1944 period outfits and there was singing and dancing throughout the weekend.

Although our visit was a short one, we hope to go back again soon and spend at least a week at this lovely home and explore more of this historic area. Steve and Rosemary, as well as the other town residents couldn’t have been more welcoming.

Owner's Response: Thank you, Dennis, for your very kind words about our cottage! We're delighted that you enjoyed the D-Day commemorations. The organised events are very good, but the spontaneity of the celebrations and the real welcome and feelings of gratitude for the liberation in 1945 are perhaps even more moving. Hoping very much to see you again, Rosemary and Steve

Familienidylle im Cottage-Stil

  • 5 of 5

  • 5 of 5

Merci Rosemary, merci Steve

Splendid(e)

  • 5 of 5

The house is just like on the pictures, but you will also have the wonderfull opportunity to meet with Steeve and Rose-Mary, you could'nt find nicer people in this area.

5 minutes to go to Utah beach, 35 to go to Omaha: very good localisation for an historic moment, but also 45 minutes to jump into "la route des caps", a small peace of Ireland hidden in France.

Go fot it !
