September and October are the best months!
Beach update: After recent storms the beach receded. There is a very small beach as shown in the recent photos. Hoping summer will provide even more white soft sand to enjoy. All the homes on Lake Michigan have a similar high water situation.
With a bit of warm weather and evaporation the water level should recede this summer.
Tranquil. Stunning views
The serenity of your own private sandy beach is just six steps from the deck, its uniquely soft sand rivaling the best of the tropical islands.
Your lovely home-away-from-home was fully renovated in 2008 and features unobstructed, breathtaking views of Lake Michigan through expansive floor-to-ceiling windows.
The master bedroom awakens to the warmth of Eastern and Southern exposure, perfect for watching majestic sunrises over Lake Michigan while you snuggle in bed.
As you rise to greet the new day and gather in the comfort of the spacious living and dining area, sunlight dancing on the waves seems to draw you through the sliding glass doors out onto your deck, then onto the beach, then into the lake.
Fall is a wonderful time to stay and enjoy the change of seasons.
Winter is stunning with the dramatic beauty of the lake, sparkling ice and snow.
The open plan living space truly inspires togetherness and creates lasting, happy memories for all to share.

While you can enjoy the convenience of a having your own modern kitchen. If you want to leave the cooking to the pros, both fine and casual dining are available nearby in Sheboygan and Kohler and a good local restaurant 'Judi's' in town. Judi's is not open in the evenings so hurry in for breakfast and lunch.
Enjoy fun for the whole family at Blue Harbor indoor water park in Sheboygan.
A new 'Waverider' was installed at the water park in 2014 which offers additional exciting thrills.

Pamper yourself at the luxurious Kohler Waters Spa with treatments available for both men and women.

In the winter, you can hike, cross-country ski or mountain bike along the Lake Michigan shoreline. A snowboard park is close by for additional snow fun.
The home has 3 bedrooms (sleeps 6) and two full bathrooms (showers only). It features a rustic knotty pine interior, ceramic tile floors and ceiling fans throughout.
The master bedroom faces the lake and has a king bed and flat screen TV. The second bedroom, with a queen bed, is located on the North side and has a nice view of the lake through the trees. The third bedroom has two twin beds and a view of the backyard and woods.
A sought after location for writing the novel that has been percolating. Authors have found it inspiring.
As a one level ranch house with are few stairs, the home is accessible to folks who do not walk well, but there are 8 stairs as you walk up to the house from the driveway.
Some interested renters wonder why the rates may seem expensive. Part of the cost of the lake front homes is the real estate taxes. the taxes are used to maintain the lovely Village of Oostburg and the schools. The average cost for annual real estate taxes can approach $20,000 per year depending on the location. Attentive upgrades and thorough cleaning increases operating costs, but permits the nicest furnishings available.
Continuous improvements made since the renovation have only enhanced its appeal as a cozy retreat in any weather in any season.
First time visitors to the area are impressed.
One of the more subtle distinguishing desirable features of this home is that it is located on a tranquil lane. This becomes important for those seeking relaxation. Other Lake front properties are located on smaller narrow lots, have numerous visitors as the ownership may be split between hosts of relatives and guests. Some Lake front houses will have 20 people visiting on a holiday weekend. If you are not familiar with the area it can be disruptive if you select the wrong property that is not suited to your needs.
This home offers the best accommodations for serenity, tranquility and quality time with guests. It may be the closest home to the water's edge, providing easy access for enjoying the lake with family and friends.
Some homes for rent have quite a walk to the water's edge from which also has advantages but can be problematic if watching children or dining near the water.
Many guests return every year so don't wait 'til it's too late.
Come visit the Best Beach House now, eh!
The home is cozy in the winter. It makes an ideal location for writing or artists. Inspiring without distractions.
NEW FOR 2016
It is difficult to predict the Lake level each year. The water level is higher than normal and has decreased the beach size. I hope it will return to normal for the season but have no control over nature's whims. The Army Corps of Engineers tracks and predicts the Lake Michigan level. Their website suggests that the beach will return to its wide expanse for sometime in 2015. Some articles suggest the lake level has increase as much as three feet from where it was last year.
In the meantime, if you can bring a kayak or paddleboard it will enhance your stay. I am unable to provide these items due to insurance restrictions.

I grew up in different parts of Michigan and central Illinois so the connection to the small farming town of Oostburg is special for me. I come to unwind in all seasons, living my life at a much slower pace than usual. It affords a much-needed respite from the cares of the every day. Life can be hectic and I am certain to feel relaxed as soon as I pull into the tree-lined drive. I enjoy the peaceful comfort of this cozy house with its ever changing, yet always extraordinary views. The charming little neighborhood, delightful Dutch community and consistently bring a smile to my face.
I enjoy driving the local country roads and seeing horses, cows, green fields, harvesting of crops. Reading my latest book with my toes digging in the warm sand or walking barefoot along the beach, waves lapping upon the shore. Yet I can also be content whiling away the hours enjoying the antics of different bird species -seagulls busy themselves feeding in the shallow ripples, Cardinals flit from tree to tree or Canadian honkers, majestic as they fly in tight formation along paths closely adhering to the shoreline, loons and even wild turkeys are visible to the observant.
There is something so calming and soothing about the movement of the waves. Some days glittering and melodic, other days crashing similar to the intensity of the ocean.
I have visited many locations around the US and still find this my favorite retreat in all seasons.
I find it difficult to leave. The peace and serenity I experience here helps me face the challenges of life.
Megan Chadwick purchased this house in 2007
The home provides my family and friends a chance to “get away from it all,” spend time indoors or out and make happy memories.
I like the quiet, the woods, the beach, the great outdoors. It brings tranquility and calm to my life. The air is cleaner. The raw beauty in all seasons, captivating.
The attraction of being almost in Lake Michigan makes this home truly special. Proximity to the Lake is the best of any property on Cardinal Lane. The waves can be alternately soothing or exhilarating, rivaling those of the widest, deepest oceans, changing in intensity and appearance as often as the wind. Neighboring wildlife come to bathe and sip the cool water.
One of the unexpected joys is walking down our quaint little lane. The dirt road is gorgeous in any season, shaded by a variety of tall trees, walled by a bed of green ferns and backed by a dense thicket of swampy woods that only enhance the feeling of being far away from the urban jungle.
Winter and fall bring a wild beauty that I still enjoy after 25 years of living on Cardinal Lane.
The close-knit Cardinal Lane community is peaceful, lightly populated with lovely neighbors. When I am there I feel as if I am in another world, close to what I want and need, yet surrounded by peace comfort and safety.
The location is close to many and varied diversions and unbeatable for ease of access - highway travel from most locations. Only 2.5 hours from downtown Chicago and about 1 mile east off Rt. 43.
I enjoy the luxuries of Kohler nearby. The Baker furniture outlet has a wonderful selection of furniture at a significant discount. The food and environment at the American Club is fun for tea in the atrium.
I like the town of Oostburg for its simplicity and ease of access.
Close by is a fun ski hill and snow board park for the kids, and adults. It is Sun Burst, in Kewaskum Wisconsin, 40 minutes away, with the 'premier tubing park in the world' as described on its site. Not Aspen, but certainly fun.
Best Beach House has easy access by car and no hassles with lines at check-in or waiting for elevators when all you want is to drop everything and relax.
Unique to this part of Lake Michigan, the gently sloping beach is covered in blond, finely grained sand, but no rocks that hide underwater to surprise your every step and no swampy mud bottom to suck your flip-flops off.
The lake water temperature and quality vary, but at times the it’s crystal clear and sparkles like diamonds in the sun over the smooth sandy floor.
The home provides both family togetherness and “alone time,” depending on your mood. Beachcombing on sunny days, stargazing on clear nights, warming your weary bones around a crackling fire . . . Entertaining is easy, with snacks and drinks from the kitchen so conveniently accessible to the deck and beach.
Wish I could be there to provide marshmallows, but firewood is provided for a beachside bonfire.
Bring a DVD along or select from our collection of family board games if the weather turns.
Oostburg has all the basic amenities, but sorry, no stoplights. Like much of small town America, it closes up early and Sunday. The charming Judi’s Diner for breakfast, lunch or dinner, the most delicious Oostburg Bakery, pizza, small supermarket, gas station, library and laundromat are all conveniently located in downtown Oostburg. Familiar big box stores (Costco, Target, etc.) are short drives if you are so inclined. Shopping is less painful in Wisconsin with the 5% Sales tax!
For an abrupt transition from the laid back beach life to high end luxury, visit the American Club in Kohler. Pamper yourself with a treatment at their $7 Million Spa, hit the links on one of their championship golf courses, enjoy a superb meal at one of their many excellent fine dining restaurants or browse their exclusive WoodLake Shops for unique treasures. Check with the American Club for spa or golf packages and availability and review their calendar of special events.
As a person born in this area and now a resident of Florida, I look forward to coming home to WI. This year was by far the best WI vacation! Being on the lake, the sun rises, having room for family to visit was the best. This really is the best beach house, as we have stayed in a few the past years. We look forward to returning next year!
Absolutely perfect spot for a family to enjoy! The home was exceptionally clean, well appointed and you simply cannot beat the location - perfect! This cottage is right on the water!!!! Out family loved exploring all that Sheboygan had to offer and this cottage provided the perfect location as a base camp for us. Camp fires right out front of the cottage on the beach was incredible - all wood was provided! Our kids loved walking up and down the sandy beach - hours of fun. We will be back!
This beach house was everything it was promised to be!! The owner made every effort to make us feel welcomed and comfortable. I had wonderful childhood memories of spending some weekends at a friend's beach house on Lake Michigan and hoped to recapture and share those feelings with my husband by this stay in the Fall celebrating my 60th birthday. The Fall weather was perfect for long walks on the beach, having relaxing morning coffee while watching beautiful sunrises and evenings around the fire on the beach. We also went to Kohler for a wonderful Sunday brunch and shopping at Woodlake. This stay was so relaxing, the beach house so comfortable and brought back memories of the sounds of the waves, the birds and the fresh air that I had remembered.
My wife and 4 kids and I had a wonderful late summer beach getaway. The property is extremely clean, well kept, and private. We loved the hospitality. From the moment we walked in, it felt like home, being greeted with a bottle of wine and all the Smores fixings for the kids on the kitchen counter. We had great walks along the beach each day and warm campfires at night. Everything was perfect and we couldn't have been more pleased with our choice! We were greatly appreciative of the owner. We never had any issues while we were there. We were even allowed a slightly earlier check in time and slightly later check out time. We look forward to planning our next Lake Michigan vacation at the Best Beach House!
Clean right on the lake. Friendly but non intruding neighboring properties. Easy quick access to all kinds of stores, activities and events. If you are a golfer i played the meadows course in kohler and looksike no one played in front of you. Prestine. It had been 7 years since i took a full week off and am glad we were at this lakefront property for the whole week. And thanks Wisconsin....7 days and no rain. Breakfast...head to Harrys in Sheboygan. Megan thanks you have a lovely lake house.
It has to be the best house I have ever rented on VRBO. A real gem! I encourage everyone to stay here if they have a chance. The owner was great to work with, very easy in/out process. A quick drive from either Chicago or Milwaukee. The water was not cold, and the beach line was great for walking. Hope to stay there again!!
Located in Eastern Wisconsin, in the rural Village of Oostburg is an oasis of calm, tranquility and peace. Your beachfront home rental has 3 bedrooms 2 bath with showers only, the most lovely quick and closest access to lake Michigan steps from your door and deck and the Best sand available.
The main attraction is being outside and enjoying nature. The Lake is cold, but beautiful and ever changing in color, waves and clarity. Walking along the beach miles to the north and south is a great way to spend family time throwing sticks and playing in the waves, running through the water, chasing the non-tame seagulls, feeling the sand and the breeze.
A crackling fire at night completes the day with star-gazing opportunities and marshmallow roasting. Go to sleep with the sound of the waves.
Your day begins with sunrise over your deck and coffee or tea and precious moments of quiet.
Nearby attractions are best described by the websites for them:Kohler-Andre state park, The American Club of Kohler, the Kohler Design center and shops at Woodlake market, world famous golf courses; Blackwolf Run and Whistling Straits, host at times to the PGA. (15 miles and 20 minutes)
Elkhart Lake is a short drive to world class auto racing, fine dining and quaint shops.
To the South is Milwaukee with its Summer Music Festival, Zoo and Lakefront activities.
To the west is Kettle-Moraine state park with hiking trails, cross country skiing.
Cedarburg is a destination for many guests in and of itself. It has a large indoor ice area, cute shops and a wide selection of delicious food. There is a glass blowing shop in Cedarburg, with 4 working kilns. Inquire further directly with them. There are several weaving and specialty craft stores.
Factory tours may be available for the Kohler factory where its world famous bathroom products and fixtures are manufactured.
Folks who enjoy fine meats and grilling will appreciate the quality and selection of options at Meisfields Market. (fourth exit north of the four Sheboygan exits.)
Finer dining is available in Sheboygan and in the Kohler resort. Whistling straits may have dining opportunities depending on the season and guests.
There is a Private horse arena for indoor lessons if you make special arrangements with me first and the owners. (White Rose Farm, 2 miles away.)
The town of Oostburg itself is a picturesque, well maintained village of Dutch ancestry. Farms and farming activities circle the rental home and cows are nearby.
Infrequently, at sunset a parade of ultralights meanders along the shore with the gentle hum of engines and the brilliantly colored sails.
Wildlife includes deer, hawks, herons, seagulls, mallards, Canadian Honkers, Loons, hummingbirds, chipmunks, wild turkeys, and all supporting ecosystem inhabitants. Along with birds comes insects. There are the usual inhabitants in a wilderness setting.
The winter brings a pristine coat of snow to the area and provides its own opportunity for outdoor fun. Biking with winterized mountain bikes along the lake shore is a favorite activity as well as cross country skiing. Sun Burst ski area is 40 minutes away. (My kids tell me a great snow board and tubing park.)
Boating does occur but is more suited to a canoe or Kayak when the water is calm. Power boats are not suited for mooring along the shore and should be kept at the Port in Sheboygan or Port Washington.
Now the unpleasant features that may annoy some guests: limited water use is encouraged as the 2,000 septic holding tank must pump out each drop of water that enters it from the household use. the pumping process will not disrupt your stay but can be annoying. There are bugs that live in the woods and come to visit the beach. We have mosquitoes, nats, flies, ladybugs, spiders and beautiful Dragon Flies. Last I checked we did not have a Lyme disease issue and those bothersome critters (ticks) were located primarily to the West. There are times of the year when the waves are huge and days when the water is completely calm. The Lake conditions are unpredictable and can change hourly. The water is often crystal clear. Sometimes algae grows along the shore in large amounts. There is no mud bottom to the lake. It has a soft sandy bottom and is generally shallow with rolling sand bars, and free of stones or rocks but check.
Temperatures change drastically and quickly. A variety of clothes should come with guests. The Lake is generally COLD. Wet suits help, and often it will warm up in the months of August and September.
In the early spring a wave of Ocean fish will migrate and die unpleasantly along the shore. They are annoying as they smell. The raccoons are fans but that may be all. They are quite pretty silver fish and children have been known to enjoy chasing them immensely. There may be poison oak and ivy. There are cloudy days and rainy days. I can not begin to cover all the information I have gained in my 20 years in the area but will be happy to address your specific questions.
