Set in the stunning Appenine mountains of Northern Tuscany is the quiet quintessentially Italian village of Monzone. The village is surrounded by lush green mountains which form part of the Parco Regionale Delle Alpi Apuane National Park (some 70 miles/200km square in size)) with numerous nature trails and peaks reaching 1947 metres above sea level.
The river Lucido runs directly through the centre of the village providing a beautiful scene of mountains and water together with almost perfect weather.
The apartment is situated just a 5 minute walk from the centre of the village through a narrow road of houses more than 200 years old, steeped in history.
The village hosts a train station, petrol station, cafes and restaurants serving exceptionally tasty and affordable food. The village supermarket is stocked with fresh, varied produce enabling relaxing BBQ's on the terrace.
It is possible to take the train in the village to visit towns like Lucca or the Cinque Terre via La Spezia at very affordable rates.
There are lots of super places to eat in and around Monzone with incredible cuisine at really affordable prices with excellent reviews.
Within walking distance there is;
The De Remo restaurant and hotel is a 5 minute walk from the house and is frequented by the locals. The food and service are excellent. Pizza night on a Saturday is fantastic with the most amazing choice of pizzas cooked to perfection. The Italian pork dish called Lardo is a speciality here and must be tried. Best to book during peak season on a Friday or Saturday. Do look at the reviews on Trip Advisor (link above)
A 10 minute drive away, or 40 minute walk away is the Al Vecchio Tino hotel with breath taking views of the mountains, an award winning restaurant with excellent prices. It is ranked 1 out of 10 restaurants in the region of Fivizzano and people drive from miles around to come to this eating place. Check out the reviews for both these restaurants on Trip Advisor, “This was the best meal of our Tuscan holiday. The restaurant has a wonderful, remote location with superb views. It is not ostentatious but the food was of the highest standard.'
The views at this restaurant are quite simply breath taking, the sunsets incredible and the food is divine.
A five minute car journey or 25 minute walk away from the apartment is a natural river spa which can be enjoyed by both child and parent. There is no cost to enjoy this super place. Kids can clamber over the marble rocks and go swimming in the hot and cold waters further up stream whilst the adults watch and relax in the warm waters against one of the mini waterfalls admiring the excellent views.
You can visit La Spezia for excellent shopping or take one of the boat trips or a short train ride to visit one or more of the 5 incredible ancient villages of the Cinque Terre. It is also possible to take the coastal walk from one village to the next village and then take a return boat trip back to La Spezia.
Beautiful beaches are located at Lerici approximately 40 minutes away (photo above) or at Massa Cararra, a similar distance.
We are an out and bound family, we love the outdoors and live in the country in Buckinghamshire. I have worked in the charity sector for the past 15 years and my husband is a secondary school teacher.
Russell and Rebecca purchased this apartment in 2013
We purchased our apartment in Monzone 2 years ago with some inheritance money when I lost my father. We fell in love with Italy some ten years previous when we went to Florence on Honey Moon. We love the food, wine, scenery, history, friendly people and weather. There is so much to discover. We love the countryside and the beauty of Monzone really spoke to us and the house is full of character and very spacious and the scenery is simply heavenly. We miss the place hugely when we are not there.
The fact the village has all the amenities you need and a train station as well as a fabulous restaurant means if you want to stay in the village and not venture out you can do.
We have a great stay in the appartement of the family Evans in Monzone. The appartment has all you need and the village is great to have relax, walk in the mountain, swim in the river and saw all the lovely things that offer La Toscana in Italy.
We visit already all the recommendations that take the family like Cinque Terre, La Spezia etc...
We recommend the village and the appartement if you want to visit La Toscana. Also one thing, we arrived to Monzone at night and we have problema to find the appartment and the Street but the people in Monzone are kindly and they helps us to arrive close to the door.

Monzone is a small village almost at the valley end in the Apuan Alps (last village is Equi Terme - nice for bathing). There are few small shops, a bar and a restaurant as well as a filling station. Most things can be bought there. Better shopping opportunities are about 20 km away, which take funny 40 minutes by car on small roads.
Although there is a railway station (not in operation during our stay) I recommend to go there by car if you plan to visit places like Lucca, Pisa, Cinque-terre or Carrara. Each of these places is more than 1 hour`s drive away but worth travelling! Also the (public) beach at Lerici is nice. You should arrive to the parking lot prior 9:30.
Some information about the booking and appartment during our stay:
* very quick response of the owner on emails prior our stay and a small present at the beginning of our stay. Thank you!
* The infos in the appartment including a 3 pages letter of the owner explained everything we needed (warm water, dish washer, washing machine,... as well as places to visit) - very good and important, as the owner does nor live near by.
* pool (approx. 5mx8m) allows refreshment at hot days, needed to be cleaned by ourselfs from time to time
* large terrace is most of the day in the shardow by about 80% of its area - I like it because sun can be burning in summer
* if you have a bigger car (we drive a Ford S-Max) you might get stuck at a narrow corner of the street about 50 m ahead of the house - or alternatively use the one-way-street in the wrong direction on the other side of the house :-). If you manage this: parking close to the house is perfect.
* The kitchen is equipped with all necessary stuff. Could be some more spoons and knives, if you do cooking yourself most of the days. The coffee machine is an expresso boiler to be used on the stove.
* some cupboard space is filled with the owner's stuff, but enough to store your items.
* enough towels in the appartment.
* I was missing a vacuum cleaner.
* although there are mosquito nets at 2 windows and we shaded the light in the evening, we had some touble with mosquito bites...
It was a pleasent stay, a lot of things to do and to visit if you don't mind spending some time in the car (or train). The peaceful and quiet environment allows hours relaxing at the pool or on terrace.
The natural thermal baths at Equi Terme are just a 5 minute drive away or a 25 minute walk along the river. Also at Equi Terme are the amazing caves which are open to the public.
The area is very beautiful with much Italian history to explore.
