Come and relax at a real Maine hideaway! Property is very secluded at the end of a dirt road on 1.3 acres with 100 feet of frontage on Johnson Cove. Johnson Cove is tidal -- 2 high tides and 2 low tides each day. Large dock and attached float provide easy access for boating and swimming at high tide (eight- to ten-feet deep at high tide, and warmer than the open ocean) and fun clamming at low tide. Lawn area on 3 sides of the house. Built in 1993, this four-bedroom home has many amenities: contemporary furnishings, high speed wireless Internet, river-rock fireplace in the living room, wraparound deck on main living level, upper deck off the master bedroom, and a short walk to the town market, school playground, library and hardware store. Our calendar is updated regularly so please check that first.
The Tidal Experience: Many guests have asked about what it's like on a tidal cove. At high tide the water is more like a pond and will give you about 5-6 hours of swimming and boating as the water is 8-10 feet high. We've been known to jump off the dock and then climb up the ladder. At low tide, you can walk into the mud and even dig for some clams to have as an appetizer later. The time of the high tide changes throughout the year but there are websites where you can find the time for high and low tides. We also provide a tide calendar at the house.
Personally, I find it very relaxing to sit on the dock to watch the water slowly leave or return to the cove every day. I am fairly sensitive to smells and can assure you that there is no fishy smell at low tide. If you do want to tromp around in the mud, I recommend rubber boots or swim shoes.
Video Available:: If you search on YouTube for 'Seachimes 61422' you will find a 3 minute video showcasing the property and the house. Please note that we have recently changed the upstairs bedroom from bunk beds to two separate twin beds and now have 4 twins in the loft.
For our first trip to Maine, we couldn't have picked a better home and location. The house is very inviting and comfortable. We didn't lack for anything. No children in our group but it would be ideal for kids of all ages. Quiet cove, great deck for relaxing and star gazing. We spent most of our days sightseeing around the area, trying to see as much of Maine as we could. We are glad we did but we regretted the fact that we didn't spend more time just relaxing at Sea Chimes. It was a pleasure coming back each day to this house. It turned cooler our last night and we built a fire. Perfect ending to our trip. We would love to return.
This is exactly what you want when you go to Maine. Great location at the end of a dirt road so it was very private (we brought our dogs and they loved the yard and we felt safe with them being able to run). Wallace's market is close by for the essentials and an awesome lobster roll. You can be at the docks getting super fresh lobster within minutes. We were really relaxed and thought the house had great amenities, like the kayaks, grills and board games. The deck was fantastic and we spent a lot of time on it just enjoying the great view to the cove
Sea Chimes is on a back cove at the end of the road. It is a quiet place with no traffic so the young kids can run around without worry. Of course you have to watch them when they go down to the dock when the tide comes in. The lobsterman's type wharf is very safe. Kayaking and canoeing is great about 2.5 hours before and after high tide. Swimming at mid-tide or better is good.
The kids love climbing up to the attic sleeping loft.
House is clean, comfortable, and fully equipped. This is our fourth stay at Sea Chimes.
We hauled kids and grandkids up to Friendship from southern Maine, and can tell you that this place is really "Maine" as people idealize it. What a warm, inviting place this is; big and plenty of room for all 10 of us (well, plus Henry, but he's still in diapers). Our kids brought everything, and needed nothing…it was all stocked and ready to go. The grandkids had a ball swimming and kayaking. There is something to be said for there being no water there for half the time…no boats, no people…just the terns circling...a real sanctuary. Son in law saw a bald eagle; made his entire trip. And, of course, the lobsters were somewhere between fantastic and OMG. Having the lobster pot to cook them in outside made it a breeze. The kids made day trips with the little ones to Damariscotta Lake state park and Owl's Head museum, while the "old folks" went for a drive and got lost among the fingers of Maine. Where else will the guy who cooked your fish sandwich for you (at Arthur Wallace's store) ask you how it was the next day? How many lobstermen will stop to shoot the breeze with tourists at the docks when you're buying lobster? The little courtesies of a Maine small town made the entire trip.
We were two families (6 adults and 4 children) and had more than enough space for everyone to spread out. The house is amazing; what a view! Everything was exactly as described. The kitchen is well stocked for meal preparations. The use of the canoe and kayaks made for great adventures for everyone of all ages. The location is perfect: secluded, huge yard, right on the water, and close to the local mercantile (which I highly recommend visiting, especially for a lobster roll). We had a great time playing games: ping pong, board games, and volleyball. Friendship is a lovely town. I definitely recommend this house for anyone looking for a quiet, fun-filled Maine experience. The owners were incredibly helpful in providing immediate communication and ideas for local outings.
We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Sea Chimes! Secluded but still close to so much. Our girls enjoyed the provide canoe and kayak while we spent time watching them from the dock. Lovely clean accommodations and great tips and recommendations from the owners. Don't miss dining at Moody's!
The town of Friendship offers a true taste of Maine. One of the most productive lobster harbors in the world, you'll see a real working town while enjoying the peace and tranquility of this unique property on Johnson Cove. Being a tidal cove, you'll enjoy swimming and boating at high tide and good clamming at low tide. It's also just a short walk to the harbor, local market/deli, library, churches and school playground.
