About the property

2 bedrooms, 1.5 bathrooms, sleeps 4, plus queen sofa bed for guests

This has been our family vacation home for over 20 summers, and now you, too, can enjoy the special place that is Nantucket. The house is a salt box, set on a large lot with a pond in the back yard. It's located 1.5 miles from town and 2 miles from Surfside Beach. It is fully equipped for cooking at home (gas grill on the deck, Cuisinart, microwave, lobster pot, etc in the open kitchen area), but you may end up sampling the numerous restaurants on the island. Or maybe you will take a lobster picnic to one of the beaches, all of which are open to the public on Nantucket, and many of which are accessible from the bike paths that criss-cross the island. If you stay at home, make yourself comfortable on the wrap-around deck, play the piano in the living room, use your computer (wireless internet works throughout) or the DVD player. The full basement has a washer and dryer. Beach towels, beach chairs, and all linens are there for your use. Haven't you always wanted to come here?

Golf and Tennis and Lecture Series: There are several private and public places to play golf or tennis on Nantucket. Some are available to the public, and some require being invited. Miacomet Golf Course and Nantucket Tennis and Swim Club (both open to the public) are our favorites. Equipment can be rented or your own. You can walk the golf course, which offers 18 holes of links-type sandy play. The views are stunning from many holes.

If you've had enough fun in the sun, you'll be amazed at the variety of lecture topics and famous people who come to speak on Nantucket. On almost any day during the summer months, you can find interesting programs, including musical and theatrical performances. And the venues are interesting, too: old churches and meeting houses, restored homes from centuries ago.

Water Activities: Nantucket's beaches are justifiably renowned. First, they are available to everyone--no beach is restricted on Nantucket. Second, the whole island is a beach--360 degrees of sand around you. And third, they are some of the prettiest dunes in the world. Think of a beach photo with rosa ragosas and blowing grasses and maybe a dune fence, and it was probably taken on Nantucket, especially if it has a harbor or ferry boat or lighthouse in the background. That's why you'll see families having portrait photos taken so often on the beaches.

If you leave the beach for the water, you can fish (blue fish and swordfish are famous here), wind surf, kayak, sail (laser to 12 meter), water ski, or go whale watching. Or you can take the kids to the beach play areas at Children's Beach or Jetties Beach, and laze away the hours at a calm Nantucket Sound beach. Your teens will prefer the waves and snack bar at Surfside Beach on the Atlantic side of the island, where the action is hipper.

Culture, History, and Food: It is hard to over-state what Nantucket has to offer. The Whaling Museum, show-casing artifacts and educational displays about the island's whaling history is among the finest in the world. Scrimshaw and Melville artifacts are second to none. The Atheneum (library) hosted Frederick Douglas (Black Abolitionist) in one of his first speeches, and that's where Maria Mitchell (first female astronomer) worked. You can see the offices of the shipping company that owned the Boston Tea--before it was dumped into the Bay during a famous party.... Lucretia Mott, feminist who promoted women's suffrage, and Benjamin Franklin's mother, were born and lived here.

The restaurants are so numerous it would take more than a full summer to sample them all, and the quality is exceedingly high. Most take reservations. The only real problem is deciding which ones you'll go to! When you want to stay home, there are several wonderful seafood stores where you can purchase fresh fish and lobster.

This is our home away from home, and we trust you will treat it as such. We love being able to spend time on Nantucket, and we enjoy sharing it with others. Please note that we do not allow pets or smoking. Our place is not fancy, but it is comfortable and well situated. It is perfect for two couples, or for a family with children and perhaps a babysitter. We will be happy to help you with restaurant, beach, and activity recommendations. A car is not absolutely necessary, but it is recommended. You can rent a car (most chains have representatives at the airport), or bring your own car over on the ferry from Hyannis. It is advisable to have car reservations, but not necessary to have passenger reservations. Airlines serving Nantucket (ACK) include USAirways, Cape Air, and Continental (sometimes this changes). You can bring your own bicycles or rent them on the island. Also available for rent are sailboats, kayaks, motor boats, water skis,

Nantucket holiday!

  • 5 of 5

We spent two weeks on Nantucket this summer—an enormous luxury for our normally overscheduled lives. This house was perfect for our needs. Upstairs are two bedrooms, one for my husband and I, and one for our younger son (this room has two single beds), and a downstairs bedroom with a pull-out couch for our older son. What makes our vacations best are quiet and beautiful surroundings, meals al fresco, convenient grocery shopping, and lots to do with the kids. With some trepidation, we opted not to rent a car—which turned out to be a huge success. We biked everywhere, except for our rides to and from the airport, one night’s dinner at Topper’s in Wauwinet, and our initial grocery run. In addition to Stop and Shop, we figured out a 10 minute backroads ride to Bartlett Farms for great produce and fresh fish (and the Cisco Brewery is just down the road from the farm.) We wound up joining the Maria Mitchell Association and took several night walks through Prospect Cemetery to the observatory to look through their telescopes. Our favorite nearby beaches were Miacomet and Madaket—just walk down the beach and you are away from the crowds. The house and its furnishings are well-loved, and you can tell this is a place that has given lots of people a lot of joy over the years. That said, the house was clean, well-stocked, and the caretaker (whom we had to contact a couple of times because I managed to lose my backpack with my wallet, phone and keys to the house) was very friendly and super helpful. Also, Nancy was very quick to respond to my questions before and during our stay, which made things super easy for us.

Honeymoon Gift

  • 5 of 5

As a wedding gift to our nephew and new wife we planned a honeymoon to Nantucket including a week's stay in this great spot. They loved the house. They grilled on the deck, cooked in the kitchen and enjoyed the peace and quiet. The house had everything they needed. The location was perfect for getting to town and various beaches by bikes. The home owner was great to work with and liked being part of the plans!

We have always loved Nantucket and wanted to share that feeling. The island and this lovely spot did the trick.

Owner's Response: Mary Jane--It was such fun to help with the planning of this thoughtful and memorable wedding present for your nephew and his bride! Picking just the right photos for the card you were making and talking with you about what they might especially like or need was a pleasure. And then hearing how excited they were when you gave it to them really touched us, and reminded us of romantic times we and others have had on Nantucket. Since then, we've had another honeymooning couple who were there in the Fall, and several inquiries for this year already. We may have to put in some heart-shaped dishes or some such!

Peaceful and convenient.

  • 5 of 5

My brother and sister and I recently attended a wedding in Nantucket and stayed at Nancy's house. It was exactly we were looking for. The perfect distance from town to bike to (about 10-15min), and located in a very peaceful and quaint neighborhood.

The inside was very clean and well appointed, and the deck looks out on a lovely small pond. The birds in the nearby bushes were very nice to listen to and we saw countless bunnies hopping around the property.

The house is very close to the Cisco Beach bike path and we took advantage of it as often as possible.

Will come back again for sure!

Fabulous vacation home!!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed here for a week during the summer, and it was a perfect home for a Nantucket getaway! The house is very clean, well-maintained, and had all the amenities that we needed. The large deck and beautiful yard provided great spaces for us to enjoy the weather when we were not at the beach. Location-wise, this home could not have been better. Situated on a quiet street, there is a picturesque view of a pond from the back deck, and a pleasant cross-breeze throughout the day that makes the home a perfect place to relax. It is a short bike ride to the beach, downtown, or to Bartlett Farm and Cisco Brewery. The home is also located near shuttle stops and has a large driveway for easy parking, so accessing other parts of the island is very convenient. We would definitely recommend this property to friends and relatives, and I look forward to returning the next time we visit the island!

Owner's Response: Katie, It makes me happy that you and your family made such good use of your Nantucket time, and that our home helped make that happen. I'm writing this in November, and your description of the cross-breezes brings me back to summer days with the doors all open and the sounds and smells of the fields and the pond wafting through. Please do come back, and we are instituting an incentive to repeat guests as of 2015: a discount on all future stays at our home!

Great spot for a weekend in Nantucket

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I were in town for a wedding and wanted a house rather than a hotel room. This was perfect for the two of us. House is very comfortable (could have easily housed a couple more people) and was well equipped with everything you need. It is an easy walk into town (maybe 20 minutes) but nice and quiet at the house. A great spot and we'd certainly rent it again the next time we need a house in Nantucket.

Home is a great spot with all the basics you need for Nantucket. It's part of a friendly neighborhood, situated on a pond with a wrap around porch to enjoy the mornings and evenings. The home is clean, well-stocked and as described. And it has a piano, which made our family enormously happy!

Owner's Response: We're glad your family enjoyed your stay with us, David. The piano is special to our family, as my Mom was a pianist, and it was she who helped us pick it out. It stays in tune best if it's played, so thanks for helping to do that. You mention the wrap-around deck: we just returned from staying at the house ourselves, and that is where we spent hours every day. We added two deck lounge chairs last year, and they were put to good use by our family!

We came to Nantucket quite by accident--a sailing trip that was re-routed. We were charmed by the quaint character of this town that stood unchanged for over 100 years, captivated by its Quaker and whaling roots, and drawn to the endless possibilities for family fun. In the 30 years we have made it a family vacation destination, we have never tired of the place, because there are so many, and such varied, activities. You can come here and go to a different beach every day: they are all open to the public. You can go to a different museum every day: there are 16 at last count. You can bicycle around the island in one direction one day, and make an entirely new circle the next. You can attend countless art gallery shows and antique auctions, charter a fishing trip, go on a guided wild flower walk, or just sit on the deck and watch the sun set. And this doesn't begin to touch the restaurant possibilities: you would not be able to sample them all in a full summer. Hope you can come!

Other Activities: exploring historic (16 museums), cobble-stoned, Nantucket town
