Why Paul and Jean Kirchner chose Northern Michigan

Very private and yet close to Traverse City.

What makes this cottage unique

The bunkhouse, adjacent to the main cabin offers a custom space with all wood interior, where you can awake in an upper bunk overlooking the lake or relax in the floor level living space with a built in table, large screen TV, private bath with a shower and a closet that holds the stackable washer dryer for the property. It is very nice for families or couples want some separation while having the main cabin and other amenities to share.

Summer 2016 we added a lakeside enclosed gazebo to allow you to be outside in a mosquito free dining and relaxing area.

The cottage is offers a PRIVATE LOCATION on the end of a seasonal road with NESTING EAGLES and abundant wildlife, a sandy bottomed lake, AMAZING SUNSETS and only minutes from downtown Traverse City. BOATS AND A HOT TUB ARE INCLUDED in the price of your rental.

A Very cozy place! Perfect getaway place with gorgeous scenary!

  • 5 of 5

Our experience was great. My wife and I rented this place for a few days for our honeymoon. It was perfect! It is on a beautiful smaller lake, towards one side so very private. The cottage comes well stocked with any amenities you may need! The detailed list is exactly what we found. Paul and Jean were great to work with, very responsive and helpful as needed. They are able to suggest things to do, places to see or nice spots to grab a bite to eat.

The place is not very big to hang out inside but who needs to when you have kayaks, boats, and a nice lake to swim in, not to mention a sitting deck and a fire pit for at night. The cottage is very close to stores and shops in Traverse city without the busyness of all the tourists. It is not a far drive to sleeping bear dunes or many of the wineries on mission or Leelanau peninsula. All in all the cottage was a great place to stay, has beautiful sunsets across the lake and we highly recommend renting from Paul and Jean.

Simply beautiful!

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely enjoyed our stay. The owner's were very accommodating and maintained communications with us in a timely manner at all times. The cabin was gorgeous and very private. We utilized the hot tub, the kayaks, the screened porch and the fire pit. We loved waking up with a beautiful & private view of the lake every morning. The place was well kept and we instantly felt at home. Everything we needed was there. The owner returned our deposit promptly. Thank you Jean! We will be back in the future and plan to bring more of our family. :-)

Adorably cozy and well appointed cottage with a spectacular view of beautiful Bass Lake

  • 5 of 5

The listing description was very accurate--spot on. The kitchen amenities were ample to prepare both breakfast and dinners, including a large/nice gas grill outside. The boats ( 2 kayaks, paddle and row boat) were awesome and one of the reasons we chose this place. Plenty of linens/pillows and lots of comfortable places to sit and relax, both inside and out. Gas fireplace inside too. Outside seating was really great with a very nice deck with 2 tables and lots of chairs overlooking the water, plus a nice fire pit with plenty of outdoor seating and free wood too (You chop it). The hot tub was wonderful and well placed on the property facing the lake--beautiful to relax in, especially at night. It is covered, lighted and just steps from the cottage.

Additionally, the separate small cottage was the hangout and sleeping quarters for two girls, age 13. They loved it! Had their own TV with cable too. Even though they had two fans in the space, it was still pretty warm. But hey, it's summer and they need to know what we went through back in the day! In the main space, there is an air conditioning unit but we chose to forego it in lieu of the nice ceiling fan.

Both places were spotless upon arrival and we appreciated the free bottle of wine as well! VERY WELL maintained throughout. The owner provided excellent customer service at all times and was quick to pick up the phone and provide answers to our needs. Very friendly, wonderful people who care!

On the recommendation of the owners, we spent one day in Sutton's Bay and Leland to do some shopping and enjoying some food too. We loved both the drive to the towns as well as the towns themselves. Both kept us happy and busy. Just delightful really. We had a lovely lunch at "The Cove" in Leland, overlooking "Fish Town" and the lovely water. We also tried the pizza at Rico's Cafe (nearby) and it was decent. Convenient grocery (Toms) close by also.

Yet, we mainly wanted to enjoy the cottage and its surroundings. I spent each morning up early, watching the sun come up, seated on the boat deck with a fresh cup of coffee and a good book...heavenly! All the girls slept in each day. We took great advantage off all the various boats, but the kayaks were favorites! We enjoyed their variety of board games and played late into the night while snacking and laughing (try "Beat the Parents" if you have kids!). We saw a water snake, plenty of frogs, a bald eagle, geese and loons!

Simply put, WE LOVED THE PLACE!!

Perfect little spot for peaceful vacation!

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from a week at the Bass Lake cottage and couldn't have been happier about this rental. We'd definitely rent it again next summer for a peaceful and fun family getaway. The cottage has everything you need and all the fun water toys/boats and a hot tub, too! Plus a great covered deck area with two tables, a firepit, a nice long dock and a sweet bunkhouse for kids/teens, too. We were four adults (in the main cabin) and two teens in the bunkhouse and just had a wonderful time. There was a full bath in each building, so that was nice. The showers were a bit small (cabin one would be hard to shave your legs in), but we made it work. It's vacation, after all -- why fuss over the little stuff?!

There were lots of games and books to enjoy in the cabin while there, too, and fans to run when it got a bit hotter (they had an air conditioner, too, but I didn't want to turn it on -- wanted to enjoy that fresh lake air!). Two adults took the bedroom, then another of us slept in the loft and the fourth on the pull-out couch on the first floor. That loft is great, though, with two twin beds and has a great set of sturdy stairs to get up there. Kids 8 and up would love it as well.

Oh, and the lake -- just so gorgeous. It isn't a very huge lake, but that was fine with us. It was so nice and private and not at all busy. It was shallow for quite a ways out. We still did manage to fish a bit, though (from the rowboat and off the dock) and caught/released some small fish for fun. The kayaks were wonderful for exploring the lake, as was the paddle boat. We used the gas grill to cook out a few times for dinner, as well as s'mores at the firepit. But we also explored the area easily (40 min to Dunes Climb, 1 hr to Torch Lake). And it's only about a 10 minute drive to downtown to Traverse City from the cabin.

Overall, it was just really a great week at Bass Lake and everything we were hoping for -- good, wholesome fun and time together enjoying nature and the water and a perfect little space with all the necessities to do so. Thanks for sharing your space with us!!

Very Picturesque

  • 5 of 5

We were originally scared about the size of the cabin and the one bathroom, but it was not a problem for three adults. The cabin was well furnished and the kayaks were used every day. The bunkhouse was used by my two growing young sons, and other than coming over to get food and drink, it was no problem. Overall it was a great place and the landlords were very attentive and helpful.

This cottage is adored by couples for honeymoons and anniversaries because of its private location, close to Traverse City. Families with small children love the quiet location with sandy bottom lake. The bunkhouse is a unique feature that is especially helpful if some family members desire/require a private space or quiet space for parts of the day. It is self contained minus the kitchen so older children or grandma and grandpa can have their own retreat. The west facing great room and deck are the perfect place to watch amazing sunsets over Bass Lake. Many visitors report seeing nesting eagles and other native water birds near the cottage. It is in a private location with only one other neighbor at the end of the road. Credit cards are preferred for reservations.
