Why Paul and Jean Kirchner chose Northern Michigan

Very private and yet close to Traverse City.

What makes this cottage unique

The bunkhouse, adjacent to the main cabin offers a custom space with all wood interior, where you can awake in an upper bunk overlooking the lake or relax in the floor level living space with a built in table, large screen TV, private bath with a shower and a closet that holds the stackable washer dryer for the property. It is very nice for families or couples want some separation while having the main cabin and other amenities to share.

Summer 2016 saw the addition of a lakeside enclosed gazebo that will allow you to be outside in a mosquito free dining and relaxing area.

The cottage is offers a PRIVATE LOCATION on the end of a seasonal road with NESTING EAGLES and abundant wildlife, a sandy bottomed lake, AMAZING SUNSETS and only minutes from downtown Traverse City. BOATS AND A HOT TUB ARE INCLUDED in the price of your rental.

we enjoyed our secluded getaway

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful time at the cottage, and enjoyed the many activities located right at the house and bunkhouse, particularly the fire pit where we roasted marshmallows every night. We hosted our grandchildren, 2 and 6, and felt very safe with them on the grounds and on the dock, given the shallow water surrounding it. The only negatives, if any, were that the water was silty rather than sandy, and none of us were comfortable standing in it, and our little one was not comfortable on the stairs to the loft, nor being "locked" up there once we put the stairs up for the night (we didn't feel comfortable leaving them open for fear that she'd fall during the night). I think a longer stay would have alleviated her anxiety, as well as another year or two, as the 6 year old thought it was great fun to have her own space. Besides those two very minor issues, we had a wonderful time at the cottage, the neighborhood (particularly the horses up the street) and at the beaches in Traverse City. Thank you for a lovely vacation we're all sure to remember!

Owner's Response: I am pleased that you enjoyed your time at the cottage. I would like to respond to a couple of your concerns. In regards to the lake I am not sure why you were not comfortable standing in the water. The water is clean and usually very swimable. Crystal clear water happens when the weather is very calm or you are on a spring fed river. We have never had a complaint about the water before. I am not sure I would put a two year old in the loft except for a visit or sleeping with an adult. The sleeper sofa is an option I would have considered for two smaller grandkids. The cottage doesn't fit everyone's family but it has a lot of options. You might prefer our Perch Lake cottage with two bedrooms on the main floor. I love to hear that you really enjoyed your visit in spite of your discomfort. Memories are so precious with Grandkids. Thank you for your review.

peace and serenity!

  • 5 of 5

We had such a peaceful and relaxing time at this beautiful little place! Went kayaking in the cool of the morning, heard loons calling on the lake at sunset, fished and built a fire in the fire pit in the evenings. We even saw bald eagles flying overhead! The cabin was clean, neat and had everything you could want or need. It was great to have the washer and dryer so handy too.

Lakeside gem, with every amenity imaginable!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second year at Bass Lake, and it's just absolutely incredible. We spent our honeymooon here last year, and are looking forward to many more fall anniversary trips!

We selected this cottage because of the amenities - you couldn't ask for anything more! In no particular order, the cottage has: a covered outdoor jacuzzi, two kayaks, paddleboat, rowboat, firepit, hammock, gas grill, private pier with shallow swimming area, wireless internet, cable TV, gas fireplace, and deck overlooking the lake. And if that weren't enough, they now have a pontoon boat for rent and a *beautiful* bunkhouse with a washer/driver for use. Honestly, if Paul and Jean aren't more careful with their thoughtful and generous amenities, we may not leave to return home next year. ;)

The cottage itself is very cozy - even though we've had more rain than sun on the weeks we've been there, we've enjoyed cooking (kitchen has everything you need) and cozying up under blankets with Netflix in front of the fireplace.

Although we didn't use the bunkhouse this year, we are looking forward to having another couple join us next year and stay there. It has a two-person futon, *really nice bathroom*, TV, small table, washer/dryer, and two twin beds in a bunk (wish I were a kid again - although it'd be tough to pick between the bunkhouse bunk and the loft in the cottage, which also sleeps two twins). To boot, the bunkhouse is really cute with its natural wood decor.

They also allow pets (with deposit and extra care), which is a huge seller for us. We have a dog we love, and couldn't imagine relaxing without him for a week.

Traverse City itself is totally awesome, too. Like the cottage, there's something from everyone - indie movies at the State or Bijou Theaters, many delicious dining options, shopping galore (including incredible resale shopping c/o the Resale Trail), biking along the bay path, tons and tons of wineries/tours, etc. The cottage is only 20 minutes from downtown (15 from box stores and Meijer), but because its tucked away on the lake, you feel like you're really secluded.

One thing to note: you will need to clean the cabin thoroughly before you leave. We don't mind this and actually kind of enjoy it (almost like we're stewarding it into the future), but dusting/vacuuming/etc. may not be everyone's cup of tea before departure.

Owner's Response: We LOVE return renters who adore our cottages. Thanks for your great review. Just a note on cleaning. Most cottages charge everyone a cleaning fee in advance. After 20+ years of renting we have found many guests love to clean themselves and save $$. We will be happy to clean for anyone who would rather just walk away after a relaxing vacation. We do appreciate advance warning, but can conveniently just deduct cleaning charges from your cleaning/security deposit.

Notes:
This cottage is adored by couples for honeymoons and anniversaries because of its private location, close to Traverse City. Families with small children love the quiet location with sandy bottom lake. The bunkhouse is a unique feature that is especially helpful if some family members desire/require a private space or quiet space for parts of the day. It is self contained minus the kitchen so older children or grandma and grandpa can have their own retreat. The west facing great room and deck are the perfect place to watch amazing sunsets over Bass Lake. Many visitors report seeing nesting eagles and other native water birds near the cottage. It is in a private location with only one other neighbor at the end of the road. Credit cards are preferred for reservations.
