When my husband asked what I wanted for my birthday, my response was to visit a house on White Water Cove that I saw on VRBO, near the town of Elk, where we had a picnic a few years before while visiting Mendocino. We contacted Ann, who was amazing to work with and the rest is now history. We arrived after dark and were greeted by a bottle of wine from local vineyards and an amazing, immaculate house. If you have ever watched "Fixer Uppers" on TV, you would think this house could easily have come from their program. A Nantucket interior with lots of attention to detail - warm throws on the couches, tasteful art, shells and hand blown glass bottles, antique ships lantern and a set fireplace that needed only a match. Ann had added a Christmas touch with potted poinsettias and a garland across the fireplace mantel.
We awoke the next morning to the wonderful view of waves breaking in the cove and through a sea cave and the expanse of the Pacific - while still laying in bed. Comfy beds, unbelievable view - I got up and ran outside to take an early morning picture and went back to bed with a book. There are no dark areas in this house. The master bedroom, kitchen and living room areas open to ocean views, while the second bedroom has a garden view with many birds. Other areas are lit by skylights. The expansive decks were as fantastic as the pictures showed.
We spent our mornings at the cove house and afternoons hiking through state parks (Russian Gulch was our favorite), watching the Ft. Bragg Holiday Parade of Lights with cups of coffee or coco in hand (most of the town was either lining the streets or in the parade), visiting the Festival of Lights in the Botanical Gardens, hitting the North Star Nursery for gifts and trying out different restaurants along the waterfront.
You will find everything you need in this house, from the gourmet kitchen, to the library with books about the area, CD's for music, recommendations for restaurants and places to visit, flashlights in every room and even a first aid kit.
We met the housekeeper as we were leaving, a delightful woman who also cleans the lighthouse museum. Her comments pretty much summed it up. " Tough job in a place as beautiful as this!" LOL This house is truly well loved by its owners and visitors, us included.
We consider ourselves experts on B&B's and have stayed in many in the Elk/Mendocino area. This time we wanted a different experience, and when we saw this house on VRBO......we knew we'd found the perfect vacation spot. We invited some good friends to be our guests.......and we had the best time!!! The view is unsurpassed and even on cold, cloudy days we could hardly pull ourselves away from being out on the deck! The house is very clean and well supplied. The beds are very comfy.......although the second bedroom is small with no ocean view The master bath is missing a shower, but the downstairs bath is close by. The view in the master bedroom makes up for the missing shower! The jacuzzi was a wonderful treat at the end of a busy day......and the fireplace was great for mornings and evenings. We arrived after dark and had a bit of trouble finding the house and dealing with the gate and lock. I'd definitely recommend getting there before dark. We loved doing the wineries and hiking in the nearby state parks. Russian Gulch was our favorite. The restaurants were amazing, and the owners were kind enough to leave us a list of all of their favorites. The Elk Store people were very helpful and they have a good supply of deli items which we enjoyed. We loved this house, and the view will always remain in our minds and in our hearts. We'd want to go back every year.......if it was just easier to get there!!! But, it is definitely worth the effort to experience this "treasure". .
After seeing this home on the internet about a year ago, my wife and I finally set aside a week where we could see for ourselves if it was as good as it looked. Being somewhat of a skeptical person, I assumed that the actual home and surroundings could never live up to my expectations. Boy was I wrong. First of all, none of the photo's are staged. This place looks exactly as advertised. The home is beautiful, well equipped and clean, clean, clean! The patio's are well positioned and laid out perfectly. The landscaping is immaculate. The Jacuzzi tub is positioned so that you have a beautiful ocean view and you can actually look down the rock cliff's at the caverns below. The outdoor shower has plenty of hot water and is very conveniently located. The whole yard is very tucked away and private. The town of Mendocino is only about 20 minutes away and there is a great grocery store, plenty of restaurants and many points of interest to keep you occupied. Ann, (the owner we dealt with), was very thoughtful and accommodating. She even had a 'Happy Anniversary' card and bottle of wine waiting for us.
If you're looking for a place to unwind, relax and recharge your batteries, look no further.
We traveled across the US from NC and down the Pacific Coastline. This was our last stop before we headed back home. Arriving after dark, we couldn't tell what the view was like. We were in awe after opening the blinds in our room the next morning. This is one of the most beautiful locations we've ever stayed!!!! Everything in the house was in order and all our needs provided except groceries. The yard is beautifully done with many pretty flowers. Such a quiet, peaceful place and we would definitely select this place again if in the area. The day temperatures were perfect and cool nights---great for building a fire in the rock fireplace. There are many places you can go hiking and enjoy a walk down among the huge rock cliffs. This was truly the Icing On The Cake for us. A blessing for us to stay at and enjoy God's beautiful creation!
We've been here in Jan, May, June and October. Always the same cool weather. Always the same spectacular blue skies (except when stormy weather). Always the same views and fireplace (throw in a stick and a match and you have a fire!). Always the same wonderful hosts. Queenie's, Elk Store, Anderson Valley, Bowling Ball Beach, crashing ocean and the sea cave in Whitewater Cove. Could watch for hours. Kim and Mike, thanks again for string this home with us.

We stayed here for a week in early/mid-April. Based on the photos & reviews of Whitewater Cove, we had high expectations--and Whitewater Cove surpassed them! The house has beautiful views, is nicely decorated (and very well maintained), and very comfortable. The beds and linens are high quality and super-comfy. There's a seating area in the den with 2 couches, which were very comfortable for reading in front of the fireplace, napping, & watching movies.
The house has lots of amenities, with everything we needed for cooking (gas burner stove, Calphalon pots, etc) & lots of extras that, in our experience, are rare in rental homes (all kinds of spices, coffee, olive oil, baggies, plastic & aluminum wrap, etc). The owners provided thoughtful little touches like a binder with useful info on the house and surrounding area, and a bottle of wine waiting for us upon our arrival. And they don't skimp on supplies--in addition to the well-appointed kitchen, there were ample supplies for everything we needed (detergent, toilet paper, first-aid kit, firewood, dishwashing detergent, etc--the only thing missing was Kleenex). This may seem like a strange thing to comment on, but after staying several places where there was *'just* enough to get us through our visit, it was really nice to stay somewhere that we didn't have to wonder if we were going to need to run to the store to re-stock.
The master bedroom has a gorgeous view of the ocean--the pictures on the website don't reflect this, but it's a big plus. And that deck! It's huge! With very comfortable chaise lounges, a two-person deck chair, a hot tub (that was pre-heated for our arrival--a really nice touch), and an outdoor shower with hot water. The house and deck both provide lots of privacy, so you can actually use the outdoor shower as a shower if you want. The deck was also great for doing yoga, with a big tree & a trellis providing shade.
When we made our reservation at Whitewater Cove, we were a little hesitant because we didn't want to spend most of our vacation in a car, & Whitewater Cove is about a 30-minute drive south of Mendocino. But we're so glad we stayed here...the home was the highlight of the trip, & our favorite 2 days of the week were the days we spent at Whitewater Cove just relaxing and enjoying that fabulous view and comfy house. We will definitely be back!
