A luxurious, very spacious villa, set in its own gardens with private pool, with fantastic views over the valley.

The villa has 4 really spacious bedrooms, two of them with en suite bathroom and balcony, and a third bathroom shared by the other bedrooms. An enormous open plan lounge/dining room with fireplace also has a terrace the width of the villa. There's a large fully equipped kitchen with breakfast table; and outside a barbecue complete with dining furniture. The mature gardens are mostly laid to lawn, and there are shrubberies and trees, and the property backs on to unspoilt woodland and hills spreading into the distance. The large private swimming pool (about 11m x 5m) enjoys the same views over the valley, towards the ocean and Spain, and is complete with loungers, sunshades and outdoor shower. A garage in the basement has space for 3 cars.

All in all, this is a perfect holiday home for a large family, two families sharing or for a group of friends holidaying together. It's large enough to offer everyone their own space, whether in the house or in the gardens; yet at the same time comfortable and cosy for truly convivial mealtimes and relaxation around the pool. The house is comprehensively equipped, and really well cared for.

The location is idyllic, in an attractive village only a short way from Caminha, a popular jewel of a town in northern Portugal, and from various fine beaches at the ocean and on the river Minho. Porto airport is about an hour away, by fast and uncrowded motorway; and Spain is just across the river, accessible by ferry or bridge, making Vigo and Santiago de Compostela airports also easily accessible.

Venade is off the road that joins Caminha, the jewel of Portugal's northern coast (the house enjoys some of the best views across the valley towards the point where the River Minho meets the Atlantic Ocean), Serra d'Arga (the region's highest point at almost 800 metres) and the historic towns and villages of the inland Minho region. Spain is very close by (just 20 minutes away by ferry or road bridge), and Porto easily accessible in less than an hour. This is, quite simply, a perfect spot from which to tour the fantastically beautiful coastline, mountains and countryside. Valença, 25 minutes drive east, has an ancient fortified walled town; and Viana do Castelo, 20 minutes to the south, has impressive old buildings, narrow cobbled streets and a modern river front teeming with cafes and restaurants.

The region is mountainous, with lots of woodland and littered with greenery, whether it be the vineyards everywhere or the small fields of the local subsistence farmers. It's an area with some stunning ancient churches and villages, and a way of life for the villagers that doesn't seem to have changed much for centuries.

There are many clean, safe beaches a short drive away. The coast, of course, is increasingly popular with tourists, but is so far largely unspoilt by modern tourist developments, so offers a glimpse the old traditions and ways of life that are quaint and exciting, but also greatly relaxing.

From Caminha, you can easily and cheaply take the train to explore the north of Portugal as well as Galicia, from Porto to Santiago de Compostela, without the bother of taking the car. But there's also an excellent motorway network for more independent exploration of the region - visits to the mountains and the National Park, for example. It's a truly beautiful part of the country.
