Monte das Sesmarias is a delightful converted farmhouse, the home of an Anglo-Portuguese family currently living abroad. Our guesthouse located close to the main building has a huge double bedroom with en-suite bathroom/shower giving onto a private colonnaded terrace with a water pond. A private sitting room with a double sofa (sofa bed) can be used as a second bedroom for extra children or friend. There is a second full bathroom for the extra guest. For those wishing to cook at home, a kitchenette built in an old bread oven room can be used to prepare light meals.
The guesthouse is a stone's throw from a large shared pool surrounded by orange and lemon trees.
Sesmarias is set in an olive grove surrounded by cork forests. It's silence is broken only by the occasional visit of the local shepherd and his sheep. It is a paradise for walkers and bird watchers. Visiting ornithologists have logged 100+ species including the great grey shrike, hoopoe and black-winged kite.
In addition to private guests, the guesthouse at Monte das Sesmarias has been designed to provide accommodation for teachers and students attending workshops at the main house. A yoga studio with exquisite views can be used by yoga groups or for other activities such as dance, music etc. Availability of the guesthouse means that there is no group activity, so peace and quiet can be guaranteed. Please contact the owner if you want to enquire about the yoga studio.
The farm is called Monte das Sesmarias and is an idyllic spot to get away from our busy lives and just enjoy the sounds of nature, have a swim in the pool and distill in the sun. The house has plenty of books to read and board games to play. Bird life is wonderful to watch and going for walks is a must. The village close by is called "Aldeia da Serra D'Ossa" or just "Aldeia da Serra" (±200 inhab.) and is at 3km from the farm on the N381 road between Extremoz and Redondo. It has a couple of restaurants, one more expensive and highly sought out by Lisbon people, and another cafe/restaurant "Restaurante Serra D`Ossa" where you can eat at or order a few very typical dishes to take home for dinner. Close by is the convent of São Paulo which is now a hotel (worth visiting, has beautiful azulejo covered walls). The closest town Redondo (9 km, ±5000 inhab.) there is a good supermarket and all amenities including an medical center. Redondo is a beautiful medieval town famous for its pottery and you can watch it being created on potter's wheels and try it out yourself, kids love it. The two closest cities where you can find anything under the sun are Estremoz (25min drive) with its famous Saturday morning open farmer's market which is a must. You can also go up to the Estremoz Pousada and climb the tower for spectacular views. From there you can take a 1h highway drive to Spain, and visit Merida's Roman museum and the Roman circus. Evora (35-40min drive) is a larger city (1h drive from Lisbon) with many monuments to visit, and very culturally active, summer concerts, a beautiful theatre (Teatro Garcia de Resende), Roman ruins, museums, exhibitions, etc. For a special sunset dinner we recommend Reguengos de Monsaraz (37 km) on the spectacular Guadiana river lagoon bordering with Spain (Albufeira do Alqueva) with magnificent views.
