Thanks for stopping by and welcome to The Dock House!!
The Dock House is a prime spot for family vacations. The mountain panoramic views are exceptional. We are located on pristine Nantahala Lake, which is the second highest lake east of the Mississippi, and one of the cleanest man made lakes in the world. Rising 3000 feet above sea level, the Mountain topography produces mild temperatures in spring and summer. Fall follows which a spectacular display of Mother Nature’s colorful artistry - as the autumn leaves turn brilliant hues of orange, yellow, crimson and gold. Winter has its own allure – providing visitors with a secluded idyllic winter wonderland.
The Dock House was custom designed to fit it’s surroundings and might be the closest home to Nantahala Lake. The deck is a mere 10 feet from the shore line which makes for an easy walk to the oversized dock. Also, nearly every room in the house has a view of the lake, including the master shower, hot tub area and the sauna. The tile and slate selected for the bath rooms enhances the feeling of warmth and serenity that the Nantahala area is known for. The Silestone counter tops and the gourmet kitchen make meal preparation a pleasure! We have spacious decks which are perfect for sunbathing, reading, relaxing and family outdoor gatherings. Our home is also equipped with a big screen TV and pool table. ! The unique 2 master bedroom plan makes it perfect for 2 cost conscious families that like sharing vacation time together. There's a bunk room that sleeps 6 and a loft that sleeps 4, so there's plenty of room for the kids!
The Dock House is truly a unique home. You can tell by looking at how the house blends in with the mountain side. The site was carefully selected for the optimum view and to harvest the magnificent red oaks which were milled into the extensive hardwood flooring and crafted into the beautiful hand rails in the foyer and loft. The post and beam interior was constructed from whole white oak posts and rough sawn white pine beams, which mostly came from the house site as well. The custom designed doors, kitchen cabinets and the one of a kind kitchen table were all hand made from an ancient black walnut tree that was blown down by a storm that passed through Andrews, NC in May of 2002.
The Nantahala area has a lot to offer families who want to create wonderful memories! Entertainment enthusiasts will enjoy the Mountainside Theater, located in the heart of Cherokee Indian Country. The theater is famous for its production of “Unto These Hills”, which is a live re-enactment of the story behind the Cherokee Indian historic “Trail of Tears” journey. Or, hop aboard the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad for your choice of scenic family train rides or romantic gourmet dining. The Railroad also presents a Mystery Theater dinner on select Friday nights. Sports fans will delight in nearby offerings of white water rafting, mountain biking, skiing, and hiking. If you are adventurous you must go rafting down the Nantahala River. It is one of the finest whitewater rafting rivers in the country. And, the Tsali Recreation Area is fast becoming a “Mecca” for lovers of mountain biking. Hikers of all ages will appreciate the world famous Appalachian Trial, which you can pick up with a short drive from home. You also don’t want to miss a drive up to the top of Wayah Bald, which offers stunning views for miles of the Western North Carolina landscape.

About Mike McDowell
I'm the designer/builder of this house. We are the original owners and we take a lot of pride in what we do. Mountain houses require a lot of work and we aren't afraid to roll up our sleeves and get the job done.
Mike McDowell purchased this House in 1995
Why Mike McDowell chose Topton
This house is centrally located on Nantahala Lake. Yet, when you look out over the water you can only see 3 or 4 docks. Our decks hang almost to the waters edge, so you get the feeling of being right on the water. It's just a wonderful place to experience the beauty of the mountains.

Dock House awesome
9 members of our family just returned from a vacation at the Dock House. It was absolutely wonderful. The house is a mixture of beauty and comfort. The lake is gorgeous, very clean and so clear you can see the fish! We were already talking about next year before we locked the door behind us. I highly recommend this rental.
The house was all that was promised and very well kept. The owner provided great directions and lots of other useful information. It is fairly remote but there is a little store less than 5 minutes away with the basics. We actually planned to visit some of the local attractions-gem mining, cherokee casino, etc., but we were so relaxed and happy at the Dock House that we never left except for a quick run into Franklin (about 25 minutes) for more groceries.
The house is very near the water so there is a steep driveway to negotiate but it is paved and there is a parking pad midway down for small 4 cyclinder front wheel drives.
Awesome House - Will be back!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Amazing house, beautiful view, lots of space, and awesome outdoor deck! We went on Labor Day Weekend and it was so nice that the lake wasn't super crowded with boats. You could enjoy the lake which was really nice. We had 8 adults and 2 kids and we didnt feel cramped at all. We will definitely be back!
Beautiful views, perfect family getaway!
Our family of five spent a idyllic week at the Dock House and loved every moment. The views of the lake and mountains are so beautiful and peaceful. We thoroughly enjoyed the house, especially the pool table, hot tub and the deck. The kids loved the kayaks and we rented a pontoon boat for tubing and fishing. One night we even had pizza delivered by boat from the nearby marina! The kitchen was well equipped, and the bedrooms were more than comfortable. The driveway was steep and it was tricky to find the house, but all was definitely worth the experience! An awesome place, perfect for relaxing and spending great family time together!
Great house. Beautiful views in a semi-remote location.
Indoor and outdoor spaces excellent for a couple of families to share. Well decorated. House is in need of some light maintenance work but nothing that would detract from your stay.
Spectacular views, relaxing, fun and making memories
Our group had our usual 'large' time with each others company. Negative indeed was the offloading area to the house. Extremely steep hill and ONLY ROOM FOR 1 VEHICLE 'at a time' TO UNLOAD. Parking at the top of this steep hill for 2 vehicles making it strenuous for the back and forth when needed. We found multiple 'maintenance list items' as the Owner referenced them when advised......#1 - TV in loft did not power on at all, #2 - the Pavilion TV (satellite) did not work, #3 - No pool rack, #4 - had to replace batteries in 2 remotes, #5 - several light bulbs need replacing, #6 - downstairs toilet would not flush or would slow flush. When paying premium for rentals, our opinion is these 'maintenance items' should have been taken care of before our arrival. In addition to this, make sure you read all the details on agreement because VRBO deducted (for additional fees??) 2.5% of our rental fee from the '$500 refundable damage deposit' therefore we did not get credited the entire $500 at the end of our stay. Just things that are important to most folks. Thanks for allowing us to enjoy the views of Nantahala Lake !!
Beautiful home, Beautiful Lakeview!!
Beautiful home and uniquely decorated very tastefully done. The view from the balcony is perfection , very private you don't see any other homes just docks. Very private. Marina very close by and was fantastic we enjoyed 3 days on this. We also did some hiking and went to wyha bald the views are breathtaking. We only had 3 full days but we packed it all in and it was a pleasure coming back to this home for the sunsets and enjoying the evening, we did not get to use the outdoor hot tub, but enjoyed the tub in master bathroom. This was a very large home for families but as a couple we also found it to be very romantic , we absolutely loved every minute of our stay!!!
Lake front, mountains, national forest, rafting, casino, hiking, biking, dining, festivals
