Lake Nantahala House Rental Photos and Description

House, 4 Bedrooms + Den, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 12-14)

Thanks for stopping by and welcome to The Dock House!!

The Dock House is a prime spot for family vacations. The mountain panoramic views are exceptional. We are located on pristine Nantahala Lake, which is the second highest lake east of the Mississippi, and one of the cleanest man made lakes in the world. Rising 3000 feet above sea level, the Mountain topography produces mild temperatures in spring and summer. Fall follows which a spectacular display of Mother Nature’s colorful artistry - as the autumn leaves turn brilliant hues of orange, yellow, crimson and gold. Winter has its own allure – providing visitors with a secluded idyllic winter wonderland.

The Dock House was custom designed to fit it’s surroundings and might be the closest home to Nantahala Lake. The deck is a mere 10 feet from the shore line which makes for an easy walk to the oversized dock. Also, nearly every room in the house has a view of the lake, including the master shower, hot tub area and the sauna. The tile and slate selected for the bath rooms enhances the feeling of warmth and serenity that the Nantahala area is known for. The Silestone counter tops and the gourmet kitchen make meal preparation a pleasure! We have spacious decks which are perfect for sunbathing, reading, relaxing and family outdoor gatherings. Our home is also equipped with a big screen TV and pool table. ! The unique 2 master bedroom plan makes it perfect for 2 cost conscious families that like sharing vacation time together. There's a bunk room that sleeps 6 and a loft that sleeps 4, so there's plenty of room for the kids!

The Dock House is truly a unique home. You can tell by looking at how the house blends in with the mountain side. The site was carefully selected for the optimum view and to harvest the magnificent red oaks which were milled into the extensive hardwood flooring and crafted into the beautiful hand rails in the foyer and loft. The post and beam interior was constructed from whole white oak posts and rough sawn white pine beams, which mostly came from the house site as well. The custom designed doors, kitchen cabinets and the one of a kind kitchen table were all hand made from an ancient black walnut tree that was blown down by a storm that passed through Andrews, NC in May of 2002.

The Nantahala area has a lot to offer families who want to create wonderful memories! Entertainment enthusiasts will enjoy the Mountainside Theater, located in the heart of Cherokee Indian Country. The theater is famous for its production of “Unto These Hills”, which is a live re-enactment of the story behind the Cherokee Indian historic “Trail of Tears” journey. Or, hop aboard the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad for your choice of scenic family train rides or romantic gourmet dining. The Railroad also presents a Mystery Theater dinner on select Friday nights. Sports fans will delight in nearby offerings of white water rafting, mountain biking, skiing, and hiking. If you are adventurous you must go rafting down the Nantahala River. It is one of the finest whitewater rafting rivers in the country. And, the Tsali Recreation Area is fast becoming a “Mecca” for lovers of mountain biking. Hikers of all ages will appreciate the world famous Appalachian Trial, which you can pick up with a short drive from home. You also don’t want to miss a drive up to the top of Wayah Bald, which offers stunning views for miles of the Western North Carolina landscape.

So, thanks again for letting us share a little bit about The Dock House with you. And, call or email today to make your reservation!

Warmest regards,

About Mike McDowell

I'm the designer/builder of this house. We are the original owners and we take a lot of pride in what we do. Mountain houses require a lot of work and we aren't afraid to roll up our sleeves and get the job done.

Mike McDowell purchased this house in 1995

Why Mike McDowell chose Lake Nantahala

This house is centrally located on Nantahala Lake. Yet, when you look out over the water you can only see 3 or 4 docks. Our decks hang almost to the waters edge, so you get the feeling of being right on the water. It's just a wonderful place to experience the beauty of the mountains.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"The Dock House" is a unique house, situated within 10' of Nantahala Lake. I reached way back into my college days for the knowledge to design and build this house, so a lot of care went into every detail to make your stay more enjoyable. I believe you will find it a fun and comfortable place to vacation. Thanks for stopping by!

Dock House awesome

  • 5 of 5

9 members of our family just returned from a vacation at the Dock House. It was absolutely wonderful. The house is a mixture of beauty and comfort. The lake is gorgeous, very clean and so clear you can see the fish! We were already talking about next year before we locked the door behind us. I highly recommend this rental.

The house was all that was promised and very well kept. The owner provided great directions and lots of other useful information. It is fairly remote but there is a little store less than 5 minutes away with the basics. We actually planned to visit some of the local attractions-gem mining, cherokee casino, etc., but we were so relaxed and happy at the Dock House that we never left except for a quick run into Franklin (about 25 minutes) for more groceries.

The house is very near the water so there is a steep driveway to negotiate but it is paved and there is a parking pad midway down for small 4 cyclinder front wheel drives.

Loved it! Hope to stay there again...

  • 5 of 5

I love visiting the Nantahala River area for rafting, hiking, and camping. I had never visited the lake until this trip and it is absolutely beautiful. The house was a great place to enjoy all of the scenery. Our group enjoyed playing games in the kitchen next to the fireplace, playing pool in the den, hanging out in the hot tub, and warming up in the sauna. We even had a dusting of snow one morning that our 2 year olds loved making tracks with their trucks in. Michael was a pleasure to work with. He provided detailed directions and information prior to our trip that was very beneficial as we made our plans. Several reviewers have made comments about the drive way. It is steep but I have learned from staying at several cabins in the mountains to be prepared for this. My only real complaint from our trip is that we had to leave. I look forward to visiting the area again and hopefully staying at the Dock House!

End of summer

We had a great time at this beautiful house. Plenty of space and the outdoor fireplace area is perfect for gathering. We rented a boat and pulled kids on inner tubes. Great memories. A bit steep to get to house and dock but never was a problem. The swimming was perfect. Bring your own flotation devices for kayaks and floating in the lake.

Family Christmas on the Lake... Beyond our dreams!

  • 5 of 5

From the first moment of contact, Mike (the owner) was a joy to deal with. This was a family reunion Christmas for us and one of the children has special needs. Mike and his family did everything possible to accommodate his needs & make our Christmas one to remember forever... including having the house decorated for the holidays. Mike was always easily reached by cell phone or email to answer our dozens of questions. I can't say thank you enough.

Our impressions?

1. If you are coming in from Franklin, the roads are very twisty. You will get used to it fairly quickly. It's a flatter & straighter drive in from Andrews. The driveway IS extremely steep & a bit overwhelming at first, but we were backing up & down it with ease within a short time.

2. The house was a PERFECT fit. Loved the outdoor pavilion with fireplace & Hot tub overlooking lake. Kids fished off the dock daily. Gas fireplace in Master BR was a fantastic bonus (we spent many days curled up watching movies). Master bath is a dream. After a hot tub soak, the kids loved getting warm & dry in the upstairs hall sauna. It was equally relaxing for the adults. The kids LOVED bunking all together in the bunk room, as well as playing pool on the nearby billiards table. The decorations throughout are darling & rustic & we found something almost daily to "ooh & aah" over. The kitchen was WELL stocked with almost anything we needed (hand mixer, wine opener, can opener, cookie sheets, cheese grater, big pots, etc.) If I had to find anything to nit pick about (which is hard to do), we would have liked it if the second queen BR had a TV & wished the fireplace in the living room was gas rather than electric (stone fireplace in the kitchen was AMAZING. You do have to order wood). Otherwise EVERYTHING was at or over expectation.

3. Nearby tips: Wayah Bald is a 15 minute drive & a must see with incredible panoramic views. Two waterfalls are located on Wayah Road (1 on your left just past Junalaska RD, a great fishing spot) & a much taller one a few miles down on right. Also, you can hike nearby on the Rufus Morgan Trail to a third waterfall that is 60' high (a ten minute drive & a 1 mile hike). Also at least 3 nearby geocaches.

4. STOCK UP, stores are not close. Andrews (25 minute drive) is smaller than Franklin but MUCH easier to get to & while quite small, has a supermarket & drugstore. Be SURE to stop there at the quaint "Corner Coffee Co." for an OUTSTANDING cup of coffee.

Sorry it took me so long for this review!!!

  • 5 of 5

Mike, I wanted to apologize for taking so long to write this. Our family loved the property! We aged in ranges from 2-65 and everyone had a great time! The house is beautiful and the pictures don't do it justice. Yes, the driveway is steep but nothing that your "Reverse" in your car can't handle. Waking up every morning with the view of the lake was well worth it. The kids had a blast jumping off the dock and the adults enjoyed fishing while enjoying the peacefulness of the lake. The house is as described and the kayaks were a nice touch to cruise around the lake. Our family enjoyed the area as well by visiting the local waterfalls and white water rafting. Mike, the owner, was extremely helpful and we had no issues getting in contact with him if needed. Our family will be coming back! We would highly recommended this property if looking for a nice lake house for a family vacation! Thanks again!

Awesome and then some

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I and two other couples recently rented this spectacular home for a week. I have several comments that I hope help anyone who is considering renting this property. In a word it is awesome. I will enthusiastically return. I am an amateur photography enthusiast. From sunrise to sunset I got hundreds of spectacular photos. The lake is constantly changing appearance during the day depending on the clouds and the angle of the sun. This is one of the most beautiful spots that I have discovered in the Carolinas.

In reading previous reviews there were comments specific to parking. Parking was a slight issue but nothing that would deter our return. We had 1 car, 1 full size truck and one SUV among our party and all were easilyy accommodated. There is a steep incline leading to the house itself but again nothing that is not navigable.

The master suites are gorgeous with great views. The bunk room is very comfortable. We spent most of our time in the kitchen and on the back patio over looking the dock and the lake. I began my mornings by lighting a fire in the kitchen fireplace, brewing my coffee and sitting on the back patio watching the fog on the morning lake burn off. There is a large screen TV and video player so we watched movies at night in the family room. Actually the first day for us was a Sunday and my wife and I sat in the hot tub in the deck area and watched an NFL football game.

Ten minutes away is the marina and we rented a pontoon boat and spent a day of discovery on the lake itself. Although there were a couple of items in need of repair they did not deter from the five star rating I would give the house. I took pictures of those items and sent them to the owner and he was appreciative to know about them and based on my dealings from initial contact through our deposit return he has been delightful. In the house is a book of local restaurants. We traveled into Franklin one day and had a great meal at REL. Be sure to bring the groceries you need because there is not alot local to replenish. It is about 45 minutes into Franklin and 30 minutes into Andrew.

Overall...great rental. Will return and look forward to the next stay.
