Thanks for stopping by and welcome to The Dock House!!
The Dock House is a prime spot for family vacations. The mountain panoramic views are exceptional. We are located on pristine Nantahala Lake, which is the second highest lake east of the Mississippi, and one of the cleanest man made lakes in the world. Rising 3000 feet above sea level, the Mountain topography produces mild temperatures in spring and summer. Fall follows which a spectacular display of Mother Nature’s colorful artistry - as the autumn leaves turn brilliant hues of orange, yellow, crimson and gold. Winter has its own allure – providing visitors with a secluded idyllic winter wonderland.
The Dock House was custom designed to fit it’s surroundings and might be the closest home to Nantahala Lake. The deck is a mere 10 feet from the shore line which makes for an easy walk to the oversized dock. Also, nearly every room in the house has a view of the lake, including the master shower, hot tub area and the sauna. The tile and slate selected for the bath rooms enhances the feeling of warmth and serenity that the Nantahala area is known for. The Silestone counter tops and the gourmet kitchen make meal preparation a pleasure! We have spacious decks which are perfect for sunbathing, reading, relaxing and family outdoor gatherings. Our home is also equipped with a big screen TV and pool table. ! The unique 2 master bedroom plan makes it perfect for 2 cost conscious families that like sharing vacation time together. There's a bunk room that sleeps 6 and a loft that sleeps 4, so there's plenty of room for the kids!
The Dock House is truly a unique home. You can tell by looking at how the house blends in with the mountain side. The site was carefully selected for the optimum view and to harvest the magnificent red oaks which were milled into the extensive hardwood flooring and crafted into the beautiful hand rails in the foyer and loft. The post and beam interior was constructed from whole white oak posts and rough sawn white pine beams, which mostly came from the house site as well. The custom designed doors, kitchen cabinets and the one of a kind kitchen table were all hand made from an ancient black walnut tree that was blown down by a storm that passed through Andrews, NC in May of 2002.
The Nantahala area has a lot to offer families who want to create wonderful memories! Entertainment enthusiasts will enjoy the Mountainside Theater, located in the heart of Cherokee Indian Country. The theater is famous for its production of “Unto These Hills”, which is a live re-enactment of the story behind the Cherokee Indian historic “Trail of Tears” journey. Or, hop aboard the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad for your choice of scenic family train rides or romantic gourmet dining. The Railroad also presents a Mystery Theater dinner on select Friday nights. Sports fans will delight in nearby offerings of white water rafting, mountain biking, skiing, and hiking. If you are adventurous you must go rafting down the Nantahala River. It is one of the finest whitewater rafting rivers in the country. And, the Tsali Recreation Area is fast becoming a “Mecca” for lovers of mountain biking. I'm the designer/builder of this house. We are the original owners and we take a lot of pride in what we do. Mountain houses require a lot of work and we aren't afraid to roll up our sleeves and get the job done.
Mike McDowell purchased this house in 1995
This house is centrally located on Nantahala Lake. Yet, when you look out over the water you can only see 3 or 4 docks. Our decks hang almost to the waters edge, so you get the feeling of being right on the water. It's just a wonderful place to experience the beauty of the mountains.
"The Dock House" is a unique house, situated within 10' of Nantahala Lake. I reached way back into my college days for the knowledge to design and build this house, so a lot of care went into every detail to make your stay more enjoyable. I believe you will find it a fun and comfortable place to vacation. Thanks for stopping by!
9 members of our family just returned from a vacation at the Dock House. It was absolutely wonderful. The house is a mixture of beauty and comfort. The lake is gorgeous, very clean and so clear you can see the fish! We were already talking about next year before we locked the door behind us. I highly recommend this rental.
The house was all that was promised and very well kept. The owner provided great directions and lots of other useful information. It is fairly remote but there is a little store less than 5 minutes away with the basics. We actually planned to visit some of the local attractions-gem mining, cherokee casino, etc., but we were so relaxed and happy at the Dock House that we never left except for a quick run into Franklin (about 25 minutes) for more groceries.
The house is very near the water so there is a steep driveway to negotiate but it is paved and there is a parking pad midway down for small 4 cyclinder front wheel drives.
Beautiful home and uniquely decorated very tastefully done. The view from the balcony is perfection , very private you don't see any other homes just docks. Very private. Marina very close by and was fantastic we enjoyed 3 days on this. We also did some hiking and went to wyha bald the views are breathtaking. We only had 3 full days but we packed it all in and it was a pleasure coming back to this home for the sunsets and enjoying the evening, we did not get to use the outdoor hot tub, but enjoyed the tub in master bathroom. This was a very large home for families but as a couple we also found it to be very romantic , we absolutely loved every minute of our stay!!!
We just returned after nights at the Dock House. LOVED it! We had our 2 kids and for 2 nights, 2 other adults. So much room! It was exactly as described. The view was unbelievable! Loved being able to easily run down to the dock to sit with my feet in the water. The lake is pretty deep, even right off the dock, so watch little ones! Rented a pontoon twice and it was easy to dock, as was the fishing charter. Whitewater rafting was about 30 minutes away. Wayah Bald has great views on the way to Franklin. The kitchen was nicely furnished and the fluffy towels were a treat. Probably more room than we needed for 4, but would love to return with another family. The driveway is as steep as they say, so use caution or just park up higher and enjoy the climb/descent. Totally worth it once you see the house and views.
Very nice accommodations. Very beautiful lake. What else could you ask for?
I love visiting the Nantahala River area for rafting, hiking, and camping. I had never visited the lake until this trip and it is absolutely beautiful. The house was a great place to enjoy all of the scenery. Our group enjoyed playing games in the kitchen next to the fireplace, playing pool in the den, hanging out in the hot tub, and warming up in the sauna. We even had a dusting of snow one morning that our 2 year olds loved making tracks with their trucks in. Michael was a pleasure to work with. He provided detailed directions and information prior to our trip that was very beneficial as we made our plans. Several reviewers have made comments about the drive way. It is steep but I have learned from staying at several cabins in the mountains to be prepared for this. My only real complaint from our trip is that we had to leave. I look forward to visiting the area again and hopefully staying at the Dock House!
We had a great time at this beautiful house. Plenty of space and the outdoor fireplace area is perfect for gathering. We rented a boat and pulled kids on inner tubes. Great memories. A bit steep to get to house and dock but never was a problem. The swimming was perfect. Bring your own flotation devices for kayaks and floating in the lake.
