Kauai the Garden Island is a true pacific gem, from it's sculpted mountain ridges, lush forest, and spectacular beaches to the nature grandeur of Waimea Canyon and awe-inspiring scenery of the Na Pali Coast.
`Ohi`a Kai Hale is your ideal home away from home while visiting Kauai. Centrally located, it is perfect for exploring the Garden Island as well as relaxing after a long afternoon at the beach. Fully-furnished, with two large bedrooms with a king bed in each, bathroom with double vanity, roomy full kitchen, and dining area that opens onto a large living area leading to a spacious lanai. Amenities include a/c units in both bedrooms, large-screen television with digital cable, ceiling fans in all rooms, towels, sheets, dishes and other kitchenware, iron and ironing board. We have Turbo internet (up to 20/2Mbps) with our WiFi secure network.
Ohia Kai Hale has large windows to let the beautiful Kaua`i sun into each room. Tropical vegetation, including palms, bananas, papaya, passion fruit, mango, noni, mock orange, banana, and panax abounds on the property. On the lower level there is lush landscaping with a gas BBQ grill and laundry room with high efficiency washer and dryer available for guest use.
The location of `Ohi`a Kai is ideal for vacationers, business visitors, and residents seeking short-term housing. It is fairly quiet; ubiquitous Kauai chickens and roosters and nearby neighbors may add aural color to the sound environment. The lot is one block from Kuhio Highway (no highway noise), within convenient walking distance of the beach, several churches, and the shopping and dining pleasures of downtown Kapa`a. It is approximately ten miles from Lihue Airport, a 20-minute drive at non-peak times.
Some popular visitor destinations to the north and their approximate driving times include Kealia Beach (5 minutes), `Anini Beach (25 minutes), Kilauea Lighthouse (20 minutes), Limahuli National Tropical Garden (55 minutes), Hanalei (45 minutes), and Haena State Park at the end of the road (60 minutes). Haena is where you will find Ke`e Beach and the trailhead to the spectacular Na Pali Coast trail.
To the south heading toward Lihue, Coconut Marketplace (5 minutes), Lydgate Beach Park (10 minutes), turn right at Coco Palms to see `Opaeka`a Falls (15 minutes). When you are back on Kuhio Highway heading toward Lihue, turn right to Hanamaulu to see Wailua Falls (30 minutes), Kukui Grove Mall (22 minutes), or continue on Kuhio Highway to Poipu (30 mins.) Back on the highway see the largest coffee plantation in the USA, Kauai Coffee. At the southwestern end of the road is Kekaha, with a very large and private beach, or before you get that far, turn right to see Waimea Canyon.
Your hosts, Bob and Marianne, are the owners and have lived on Kaua`i for twenty years and will be happy to answer questions and make recommendations related to your special needs and interests, including hiking, kayaking,surfing, kid-friendly places, churches, shopping, dining, activities, Hawaiian culture, medical facilities, alternative health and personal care services.
To reach `Ohi`a Kai from Lihue Airport, turn right at the traffic light as you’re leaving the airport. This puts you on Kuhio Highway headed north. Continue straight for about nine miles. Along the way you will cross the Wailua River, pass the Coconut Marketplace shopping and dining complex on your right, ans soon you will see Safeway on your left and the Waipouli Beach Resort on your right. Keep driving! Shortly thereafter you will come to a traffic light in front of a small shopping complex with a Big Save grocery store and Shell gas station on your left. The Post Office is in that complex! Right after the Kauai Store you will see a left-turn only lane in front of the Latter Day Saints aka Mormon church.
There is no traffic light here, but you will see the entrance to Pono Kai resort directly to your right. Make a sharp left onto `Ohi`a Street. Note that this is a 90° turn! Don't make a soft left onto Ulu Street, a common error for newcomers. `Ohi`a Kai is the third and last house on the right side of the street. Our property faces the parking lot of the LDS church (white church with blue roof).
`Ohi`a Kai is clearly marked with green signs. Park in the space designated for `Ohi`a Kai Hale. If we are not there when you arrive we will have a lock box on the front door. If you plan to arrive in the evening, contact us prior to your arrival so that we can give you the lock box combination.

Bob and Marianne have lived in Hawaii since 1990. Bob is a psychologist and works on the first level of Ohia Kai Hale. Marianne teaches at Hawaii Pacific University. As owners they manage three properties: Ohia Kai Hale (vrbo # 85235), a Ohia Kai Cottage on the same property (vrbo #95386), and an oceanview condo in downtown Honolulu (vrbo #111945).

Clean, quiet,comfortable 😊
We were only there for two nights, but it was surprisingly quiet. You do hear the ocean , but don’t really remember hearing the roosters crow like on other parts of the island. It was very comfortable and relaxing. We would stay here again 😊�

Nice place, great location
The hale rental had lots of room - large bedrooms, living room and kitchen. The AC worked well but only needed it one night as the hale gets many good breezes as it is on the second floor. Helpful host. Staying in central Kauai made it easy to visit all parts of the island.
A perfect location to visit the whole island
Located in the town of Kapaa, HI, this is a perfect location to explore the island of Kauai. We took beautiful hikes in both directions around the island. Kapaa was a great place to relax after a day of hiking, with many restaurants and shops within walking distance. Bob and Marianne were great hosts.
Great host, great location, a little rough around the edges
Bob was super informative about the place and communicated quickly. The location is excellent, right off the town center and near the beach. The place was what we needed, but it’s a little rough and worn around the edges. No issues that impacted our stay, but enough to keep it from being 5 stars.

Easy walk to beach or towntown yet quiet except of course for all the Kauai roosters. Property mostly light and airy. Easy to cook in.
Perfect spot in town!
This hale was exactly what we were looking for! It sits on a quite road right off of downtown Kapaa. Close enough to walk to restaurants and shops but private! The beach is just a short walk. Very nice for evening walks as well! It's central location is makes it easy to explore the entire island! The house is spacious and has everything you need! The king sized beds are very comfy also! I especially enjoyed the large lania! Marianne and Bob are wonderful people who will assist with any questions or inquiries you may have. We were greeted with gorgeous local flowers and fresh fruit! I highly recommend this place to anyone and would love to come back next year!
