Discovered by Spanish explorers in the early 16th century, the St. John's River winds from Vero Beach north to the ocean. Along the way there are miles of unspoiled beauty, crystal clear springs, and Florida history. It’s a best-kept secret that’s quiet and very pretty, but most of all, it's fun.

Clean and comfortable

Lovely view, and interesting wild life. I wish we had had more time to stay and enjoy the place but we were only in the area for a couple of nights.

I'm sold on Astor for retirement

  • 5 of 5

The house was outstanding, clean, well kept and well equipped. I am definitely in the market for houses to retire in Astor. We had a wonderful stay and the communication was a pleasure. Thank you and I'll be back. A+A+A+A+A+

OH MY WHAT A PLACE

  • 5 of 5

I hesitated to write a review on this home in fear that it would not be available to us next time we want to get away here. This place is so unbelievable. My wife and I LOVED it. Perfect is one word to describe the home and the setting. Owners made it so very easy. IF you decide to stay here Sparky's is the place to eat. Trust me.

Most Relaxing Vacation Ever

  • 5 of 5

We rented this home for a week in June 2008 and again this June 2014. Both times we found the home to be very clean and well maintained. We easily launched our large pontoon boat at a nearby marina and docked it right outside the home. When we were not out on the St Johns River, we were sitting on the screened porch enjoying the sounds of nature (frogs, owls, gators, etc.) Plan to rent again soon!

Relaxing and charming

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the this riverfront home in Astor, Florida for a week in April 2012. It's a wonderful ranch style home, carpeted throughout. The kitchen is clean and large -- very easy to prepare meals with lots of empty cupboard space to store the groceries we purchased. (Note: There is no dishwasher.) The bathrooms were very nice and clean, and had plenty of towels. Some of the luxuries were the garage (with an automatic garage door opener), laptop computer, and washer and dryer. The bedrooms were a little small, but charmingly decorated. The TV situation was satisfactory. No high-def or flat screen, but Direct TV with a very large TV. The entire house had a nice, homey feel to it.

The crowning jewel, however, is the St. Johns River right outside the screened in patio. The open floor plan of the house allows you to see the river as soon as you walk in. For such a busy, active place (fish jumping, great blue herons wading, alligators floating by), it was incredibly peaceful. The amount of boats on the river is minimal, and they don't intrude on naps or sunbathing. We fished right off the dock. There are plenty of chairs on the patio and in the yard, but we brought our own anti-gravity chairs so were able to lounge in the yard. Binoculars are a must. The river was so entrancing, we didn't want to go anywhere else!!! (Disney, St. Augustine, Daytona Beach, Ocala National Forest are all close.)

Astor is a small vacation, fishing town spread out along busy Rt. 40. Grocery shopping is best done 25 miles away in Deland, but a Dollar General store, bait shop, and several nice small mom and pop restaurants are found around the Astor Bridge that spans the St. Johns. (We'd recommend Sparky's for pizza, Castaway's for drinks and good times, and Buck & Kat's at Parramore's for great burgers and just plain good food.) Or you can go into Deland for more trendy restaurants near Stetson University. (De la Vegas restaurant is phenomenal if you like upscale Mexican food.)

The owner was very nice and professional. He was easily available by cell phone, but was gracious enough to allow us our space while we stayed on his property.

We had a wonderful, relaxing vacation and will definitely be back next year.
