Hello and welcome to the Escape Klaus. We are the Klaus', and this is our custom lakefront escape. The Escape Klaus was built to provide a “base” with which to build up lasting family memories. We plan to leave the house in our family for future generations. We hope you find an “atypical” rental that feels more like your own home. We would love for you to come back over the years and share our house right on the lake - in the woods - in the mountains - a perfect way to disconnect from the world and re-connect with your family and friends.

About Pam and Ted Klaus

Hello - here are all the Klaus' in one photo - a rare find! - Pam and Ted(29 and holding), Erik(22), Sara Jane(19), and Emma Jo(15). Pam does all the real work & Ted is a product development engineer for Honda. 'BK'(before kids), we lived and worked for 2 years in Japan, prior to settling down in Marysville, Ohio.

Why Pam and Ted Klaus chose Norris Lake

We fell in love with Norris Lake after our first visit in 2006. We love the simple beauty of the area, the stillness of 'our' little cove - Powder Mill, and the never ending possibilities that Norris Lake offers to us and to our family. Already we have re-connected with life as a result of building this home away from home! We invite you to build some memories at the Escape Klaus!

We built this house from scratch. Ted did all the legwork - with a wonderful custom plan courtesy of Richard Hlava (Ted's nephew) and the help of a local draftsman, we literally designed this house for us and our guests! From January of 2007 to March of 2009 we bought the land, planned the house, found our builder - Danny Russell, and completed all the details that go into a custom home - we hope you enjoy our house that can only hope to rival the natural beauty of the setting. We choose to build in powder mill based on the location on the lake. Our location is just off the main lake channel on a sheltered East-West Cove. The water in this cove is always smooth. Since the cove dead ends - you do not get all the boat traffic and waves - you can really relax down on the dock. Since the house faces east - even though we are nestled in the woods - you awake to glorious bright sunrises flooding the house with natural light. Powder Mill Cove is home to one of the oldest settlements on the Lake - Chapman Village. We think those early folks picked the perfect spot!!

What makes this house unique

True relaxation..letting go..re-connecting with family and friends....hearing the kids laugh and giggle..enjoying the stillness of the morning watching the mist on the lake .... catching up on a great book ...boating...fishing....exploring all the local marinas - each one with a different feel. Meeting folks from all over that stay at or live on Norris.

Close by you can enjoy Cumberland Gap National Park, Cumberland Falls, Knoxville, and the Smokies. All of this is best enjoyed by 2 or more families - what a way to enjoy life!

Perfect for fishing, tubing, skiing, bare footing, wake boarding, wake skiing, air chairs, kayaking, paddle boarding and our favorite - putting your life jacket on like a diaper and floating in the lake with a tasty beverage!! There are literally 8 different Marinas within one hour of us - all with cool food, cool gifts, and great drinks - you can literally survive by eating out all the time!

Best House on the Lake

There is a reason all of the reviewers have given this a 5 star rating. If there was an option for a 6th star, it would be easily checked. My family and friends had an excellent time at the Escape Klaus. This was our first trip to Norris Lake and I think we picked a winner. We've stayed at many lake houses on other lakes, but this one takes the cake. First, Ted, the owner, is easy to work with and very responsive to questions. He communicates everything you'll need for your trip. Second, the house has an open floor concept with great areas for entertainment both outside and inside with awesome views of the lake. The screened in porches are great (no bugs). The movie room has a huge projector which the kids loved. The house is big enough to where two families can share common areas yet still have privacy. The kitchen is excellent as we cooked everyday (breakfast, lunch, and dinner). House has two boat slips that are covered with excellent location on the lake and 10 min boat ride to local marina. The cove is extremely quiet and not boaters venture back unless they live there, which is only a few houses. This is great for swimming right off the dock. A few things to note, almost ALL of the houses built on the lake have a steep incline on both the driveway and the walk from house to boat slip. We were absolutely fine with this as Ted communicated it to us ahead of time. If you're looking to bring grandma, it's probably not the best house for you. A few reviews have complaints of this, but it's really not a big deal. It's good exercise! Lastly, at least for us, we had NO cell phone service. We all carry three different providers (AT&T, Verizon, Sprint) and you'll get "No Service." Don't let this surprise you. We didn't mind as we went to the lake to escape technology and enjoy the company of each other. Ted is working on fixing the house phone for emergencies that was recently knocked out by a lightning strike. Overall, we appreciate the attention to detail and the cleanliness of the house. We look forward to staying here again!

Nice home service terrible

This was our first time to Norris. Now after this experience we will know what questions to ask. DO NOT rent this home if you don't have 4 x4 . Drive way VERY steep. Homeowners didn't mention this in any of their info. Cell service was awful which is understandable BUT the landline was not working either. Contacted owner and they Gave excuses and NEVER fixed it . NOT acceptable. Propane tanks were leaking and empty on Saturday we had to wait till Tuesday for replacement. To top it off the master bedrooms hadve queen beds that were hard as a rock . The family that went with us left early because they wanted to get a good nights sleep. So unfortunately it was disappointing .

Some perspective - driveways at Norris are steep - ours is not unusual - you do not need AWD. Cell Service with Verizon or Sprint is available. 2 of our 3 Propane tanks were empty - for which we apologized and offered to reimburse you if you wanted to exchange them in town - but we understood the 3rd tank was working and you agreed to wait. Finally - our beds are the same as what we sleep on every night in our own home :) Pam and Ted

Spring Break Retreat

We enjoyed our stay very much. The house is beautifully situated above the lake with a gorgeous view. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you need. The house itself is very comfortable and relaxing. I loved the sun room, even in April it was warm enough to sit out in the sun room and enjoy the fresh air. We brought our own kayaks and used them in the lake. Our kids loved the projection screen to watch movies on. We all enjoyed family breakfast and dinner around the dining table with the view of the mountains and lake. Overall we had a great time for spring break. I would highly recommend this location to anyone looking for a vacation spot!
