About Tom Ahlgren

I was born in Detroit in the early 1960's and have lived in the metropolitan Detroit area my entire life - currently living in Farmington Hills which in a suburb of Detroit located in Oakland County. I am an Accountant working in the road construction industry, an avid gardener in my spare time I also enjoy traveling, good wine and great food!

Tom Ahlgren purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Tom Ahlgren chose Michigan

When I began my search for a vacation property I knew I wanted a property that truly had the charm and feel of what I always imagined a 'cottage' to be like. I had always thought that I would end up finding a place in Northern Michigan ('Up North' as we call it) but once I discovered and fell in love with the Saugatuck / Douglas area I knew that this is where I wanted to find a cottage. Since I had a preconceived picture of what I wanted in a cottage I always knew that I would just know in my gut when I found the perfect property. Well after months of searching and not finding that perfect property I was convinced I would have to either change my vision of what a 'cottage' should be or maybe consider other areas. One day in late June 2006 we spent the day at Oval Beach with a good friend of ours who already owned a property in Saugatuck. As we were leaving the beach he mentioned a property on Ferry Street that he wanted to show me but wasn't sure if I'd like it, but thought it was worth taking a look. You can't see the cottage from Ferry Street so we pulled up the gravel driveway. Without even getting out of the car or setting foot inside the place I knew instantly that I found exactly what I was looking for - a classic 1920's cottage! The property was already being run as a vacation rental known as 'The Squeeze Me Inn' so I contacted the owner and expressed my interest in possibly purchasing the property but wanted to see if it was a good fit and arranged a one night rental for the following weekend. As soon as we walked through the doors I was ready to make an offer and was sure there wasn't much that needed to be done to the property. Well I closed on the property and took possession two months later just in time to spend the Labor Day holiday at the cottage. We spent the next year fixing up the place (guess I had blinders on when I looked at the place because it needed a lot of work!). I've got a photo album at the cottage that shows the before & after

Perfect Saugatuck cottage and location

  • 5 of 5

You really can't ask for much more from a Saugatuck cottage. It was super clean and stocked with absolutely everything you will need including beach chairs/games/towels. Great for our family with two young kids, a few minutes drive from Oval Beach and the chain ferry over to town; short drive into Saugatuck and Douglas. And the outdoor spaces / landscaping is the best part! We enjoyed the different areas to relax and read, the hammock and BBQ, outdoor shower was a big hit with the kids! It is very quiet and secluded. Tom was always accessible and very responsive. We'll definitely return.

We couldn't ask for anything more!

We love this place! Outstanding landscaping and lush gardens greet you as you arrive. We were not surprised as this was a return trip. After one year since our last visit it felt like we were home. Our furry travel companions even recognized by there happy dance! The cottage was super clean and stocked with everything you need for a relaxing vacation. This year we enjoyed the outdoor sitting areas and outdoor shower for a back to nature experience. Thanks to the owners especially Tom who made the experience magnificent!

A Hidden Gem!

  • 5 of 5

The outside of the cottage speaks to what you will see on the inside. The cottage is neat, exceedingly clean and equipped with everything you will need for a fun stay. We stayed for five days and enjoyed every minute.

The outside surroundings are wooded and peaceful. There are several outside areas on the property to sit, relax and enjoy Tom's beautiful gardens.

Downtown Douglas and downtown Saugatuck are a five minute drive from the cottage.

Tom is accessible and very pleasant to deal with.

We highly recommend a stay here and we plan on returning next year.

Wonderfully landscaped cottage close to downtown!

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed in a dozen rentals near downtown Douglas/Saugatuck. This was a great find! On our approach we were impressed with the lush, manicured landscaping, and the lovely screen porch! We thought we may be disappointed as the inside would not compare. We were pleasantly wrong. The attention to detail carried from outside to the inside. Perfect accommodations for 2-6 and dog friendly! Well stocked with towels, linens and even coffee! Thanks to Tom for making us feel at home!

Wonderful Place to Stay!

  • 5 of 5

This cottage in Douglas is the PERFECT getaway place to relax and the location couldn't be better. It's situated enough from the road to make you feel as if you have your own secluded spot but Oval Beach, Mt. Baldhead, the ferry landing and the downtowns of both Douglas and Saugatuck are just minutes away. The cottage is clean, very well-stocked, comfortably decorated and has ample space. The gardens are beautifully maintained and we enjoyed seeing the hummingbirds at the feeders each day. Be sure to take advantage of the screened-in porch to enjoy breakfast or play games. There's a comfortable hammock, fire pit perfect for making s'mores and outdoor shower. Tom was an excellent host. He was available to answer questions and checked in with us to see how we were doing. We will absolutely stay here again and recommend you see this wonderful cottage for yourself!

Absolutely loved this little gem

  • 5 of 5

We rent homes frequently both in the US and overseas and must say this is THE most well stocked rental we have ever had the pleasure of staying in. This lovely littler cottage has everything you could possibly need and more. The owner is VERY generous with what is provided- plentiful, soft towels, great cleaning supplies, laundry supplies, cooking supplies, filtered Brita water pitcher, full array of spices & condiments, etc. Beautifully decorated, maintained and landscaped- such attention to detail. Fantastic back deck area with hammock and lovely fire pit. We have yet to stay in such a lovely rental. Even the loft area was completely furnished with twin bed mattresses, linens, mirrors, tv, heater, games, first aid kit. We were very impressed with the quality of everything provided in the cottage. The location was outstanding- privacy but very close to dining, shopping and beaches. Excellent and we plan to return again.
