Bright, spacious apartment off the beaten track in rural Devon

The Hayloft is the first floor apartment within The Old Stable. The apartment is accessed via outside metal stairs, so is not suitable for anyone who has difficulty with steps and is not suitable for small children. Children over the age of 10 years are welcome.

The apartment is light and airy and open plan, with a high beamed ceiling and a separate small kitchen and separate shower room at one end. The kitchen has lovely views over the countryside towards the village of Dolton and is well equipped, offering a four ring electric hob, electric oven, fridge and washing machine/dryer. You will find a supply of tea, coffee, hot chocolate and sugar and milk in the fridge on your arrival. There are also essential herbs, spices and oil. Soap and shower wash are provided for your arrival.

The Hayloft is a self catering apartment, but we do offer breakfast hampers, which can be ordered and delivered to your apartment in the evening for you to prepare and enjoy in your own time the next morning. There is a choice of a continental style hamper or a traditional English hamper. Breakfast Hampers are an additional cost @ £8.00 per person per night. Please ask us if you would like this option and we will ask for the additional payment prior to your stay. Breakfast hampers need to be ordered upon booking.

On entering the apartment, the sleeping area is on your left. We can provide twin beds or a six foot double, depending on your needs. A hairdryer is provided. A sitting area with sofa and a comfortable bean bag, TV with Freeview and DVD player. A dining table, which will seat four, completes the main living area.

The apartment is centrally heated during the chillier months and bed linen and towels are included.

Free WiFi.

Outside the front door is a first floor, tiled patio area, with garden furniture for the summer months.

There is also a shared garden adjacent to The Old Stable for both apartments to enjoy.

The Greenhouse Spa offers a cedar hot tub and sauna for 2 people and the services of a beautician. This is a shared facility for all guests, with private times for each apartment.

No pets in this apartment.

No smoking.

There is internal access to the apartment below, so both apartments can be let together. Both apartments can lock access to the other apartment. There is a cupboard at the top of the stairs where you can access ironing and cleaning facilities should you need them. A selection of garden games can be found at the bottom of the stairs.

Parking adjacent to The Old Stable.

The owners live next door in the The Old Vicarage, so will be there to greet you and will be around, at most times, should you need anything during your stay.

Dowland is a small hamlet set in beautiful, unspoilt Devon countryside, looking south towards the northern end of Dartmoor; a perfect venue for a relaxing break or for exploring nearby villages, Dartmoor, Exmoor, RHS Rosemoor and the coastlines of Devon and Cornwall. The Old Stable is situated on the Tarka Trail, a 180 mile long trail that follows in the footsteps of the character Tarka the Otter from Henry Williamson’s famous novel. The Trail splits into 2 loops and we are situated on the South Loop. Also nearby are three Devon Wildlife Reserves, Halsdon, Meeth Quarry, and Ash Moor, which offer some spectacular woodland, river and meadow walks. The area is a walkers paradise. Halsdon Wood offers a walk which takes you to sites which inspired some of James Ravilious' best-known photographs. James Ravilious took more than seventy thousand images before his death in 1999 and these can be seen at the Beaford Arts archive, a short drive away at Beaford. The Royal Photographic Society called his work “a unique body of work, unparalleled at least in this country for its scale and quality”.

Although the setting is rural and quiet we can offer some wonderful places to eat and visit. Dolton, a mile away to the north, has a small supermarket and post office, butchers and two good pubs, The Rams Head and The Royal Oak. A mile to the south you can find The Duke of York in Iddesleigh, home to Michael Morpurgo's War Horse Valley, another great pub serving good food.

Mid Devon is a quiet, peaceful and very unspoilt part of the country, where you can wander along the narrow Devon lanes and glimpse rural views through gateways. An area not yet commercialised or teeming with visitors and traffic, a reminder of ages past and a slower, less stressful, way of life.

You will need your own transport to get around.

We do accept short breaks throughout the year, with a minimum of 2 nights.

About Jill

My husband, Paul, and I live in rural Devon in the South West of England. At the end of 2013 we bought an old vicarage and have been renovating ever since! We have recently completed a renovation on the cottage in the grounds of the house and are now letting this out for bed and breakfast and self catering holidays. Paul, a retired GP, has done much of the renovation work, while I run a small holiday company with a business partner and friend.

We have three children, two of whom are at university at present and our youngest is currently still at home and working as a carpentry apprentice. We share the house with two cats and two dogs and love this beautiful, unspoilt part of the country and its people.

We have spent the time renovating the main Old Vicarage and the cottage and are now looking forward to sharing this special place with our visitors. When here you feel miles from anywhere; it's very peaceful but within easy reach of the beautiful North Devon and Cornwall coastlines and Dartmoor to the south.

Wonderful weekend break in a beautiful location

Me and my partner had a lovely Valentine's Weekend break here 12th-15th Feb, and we are both so glad we chose the Hayloft! The place is just stunning! Really well appointed, spacious and the high beamed ceiling and Velux windows made the apartment feel huge, bright and airy... Jill and Paul were fantastic hosts, really lovely people, happy to show us around and cater to our needs, providing us with all the essentials; tea, coffee, sugar, milk, oil, herbs and spices etc, as well as little cupcakes and chocs on the table when we arrived, which was a really lovely personal touch! Everything you need for your stay is in the apartment; smart HDTV, free Wi-Fi, massive collection of books, a small yet perfectly equipped kitchen including a washer/drier, a fantastic shower, plenty of storage and hanging space, and of course the huge double bed... You could literally fit 4 people in it! We did venture out a couple times, and there are plenty of pubs on the doorstep if a meal out is on the cards. All in all a very pleasant and relaxing break away in the tranquil countryside, would highly recommend to anyone looking to get away from it all!

Just... WOW!!!!

Me and my partner had our first romantic weekend break at The Hayloft from 27th - 30th June and it was everything we hoped for and more. Jill is a fantastic host, she showed us around The Hayloft when we finally arrived (we got lost as both our phones had no battery and we ended up calling Jill from a very friendly local pub for help) and left us with loads of info on things to do in the local area. The Hayloft is beautifully decorated, very minimalist with bursts of colour and the high beams make the open plan studio feel huge. The bathroom is lovely and extremely well looked after, the shower was quite possibly the highlight of my stay as it was amazing! The kitchen isn't massive but you don't need it with all the local pubs on your doorstep. We weren't there long but visited The Duke of York which I would highly recommend, the food is plentiful and delicious and the locals are lovely. Overall we had a fanastic time at The Hayloft, my only negative comment is that we didn't stay long enough! We will definitely be returning next summer.
