Overview

About the property

Built around the year 1000, fully restored, elevator, Italian style garden

Set in a fairytale scenery, the Medieval Castle in Todi was built around the year 1000 and still preserves its evocative original beauty in harmony with the surrounding landscape.

It offers peace and tranquillity, you'll be taken back to the Middle Ages. Perfect location for weddings and special events.

HISTORY

The panoramic location, with a magnificent view over Todi, was actually a strategic choice in the Medieval Age: the Tower of the castle was in fact part of a system of towers made from the alert function in the case of dangers for the city.

Over the centuries the building lost its function and was fully renovated, restored with great attention and transformed into a prestigious and comfortable residence.

DESCRIPTION OF THE VILLA WITH TOWER

The castle is spread over several levels, of which the first three are connected with internal elevator.

The ground floor features a large living/dining room with fireplace, kitchen and a toilet for guests. All rooms have direct access to the garden and the panoramic terrace equipped with table and chairs.

The first floor, reached by internal stairs, with elevator or a separate entrance from the outside, is composed by a large charming living room with fireplace divided by a double archway supported by one column. This is surely one of the most enchanting rooms of the villa with a magnificent tapestry dating back to the XVII century.

Still on this level but with independent access from the inner courtyard, we find a twin bedroom with small en suite toilet.

On the second floor, the sleeping area comprises three bedrooms with private bathrooms: 1 master double bedroom with fireplace with an en-suite bathroom with bath, 1 double bedroom with ensuite small bathroom with shower, 1 twin bedroom with fireplace and a bathroom with shower and bath, 1 living room/studio with fireplace and wooden loft library; from which you can access the tower with a suite - Towe Suite - composed by a sitting room with library (there is a double sofa-bed) and bathroom with shower on the lower level, on the upper level, reached by a beautiful wooden staircase, there is a double bedroom (canopy bed) with skylight and scenic windows. This suite can be used by a family that can share 1 bathroom or by the newlyweds when the castle is chosen as the location of a wedding party.

Please, note that the first three floors of the property are connected by elevator, and the fourth floor is reachable through a wooden flight of stairs with handrail. The suite is lovely, with amazing and open views.

The Castle has been fully restored in the past years, it is regulary maintained and is in general good conditions, it preserve the authentic atmosphere of a mediavl castle.

Inside we find terracotta tiled floors, wooden and terracotta ceilings, stone fireplaces, even in the rooms, and original wooden framing.

GARDEN AND POOL

The property is surrounded by 1.7 hectares of land with an Italian style garden, partly bordered by high stone walls. Within it we find the classic elements of this garden type: amphitheatre, hedges, a gracious pond with water jets, fountains and a splendid pergola with outdoor furniture for eating 'al fresco' . All these elements, together with the magnificent view, create an impressive scenic effect.

In front of the villa there is a large area with outdoor furniture for large groups: 2 long tables, several chairs, a large umbrella. Then the park offers many corners with table and chairs to have rest or have a breakfast, near a fauntain or under the amazing wisteria pergolas.

In a private scenic position within the park, and facing south-west, we find the beautiful swimming pool of 10 x 5 metres size. There are 8 loungers to sunbath and a cute cottage by the pool with fridge and bathroom with shower, at guests disposal.

Notes

Pets permitted on request. About 400 meters of unpaved road in good conditions. Some baths are more simply furnished in relation to the level of the rest of the house, and are quite small because were build into the thicnekss of the medieval walls. These toilets have a shower but are not comfortbale for people with restriced mobility, that are suggested to prefer the bedrooms with the larger bathrooms.

Amenities:

- 10 x 5 mt swimming pool

- WIFI Internet connection on the ground floor

- dishwasher

- fridge

- oven

- fireplace

- washing machine

Todi Medieval Castle

  • 5 of 5

he Castle and grounds were an extraordinary experience (so much so that we are returning next year to have more time there).

We rented the Castle through Luana Zangarelli (www.spoletium.it). From our very first inquiry about the Castle to the day we arrived, she handled everything perfectly - answering all of our questions in detail and arrangine everything that we needed. She was available by e-mail and phone throughout our rental week (had we needed her) and her follow-through after our week's stay was equally gracious and professional. We recommend her highly.

For one week, we had the Castle for just the two of us - choosing one very fine bedroom for sleeping and another (on the same floor) as a dressing room. Then we respectfully, but with pleasure, "explored" the remaining rooms of the Castle and the owners' furnishings - oil paintings, a large Flemish tapestry; fine antique wood furniture; a library of Italian and French books from the 1600s, 1700s, and 1800s; gilded framed mirrors; a vaulted brick ceiling; thick stone walls; large linen tablecloths; white china dishes and espresso cups; art books; and more.

Walking barefoot on the ancient tiled floors was a pleasure. The deep stone spiral steps a welcome adventure. The views out each window wonderful and varied. The elevator a convenience with our luggage.

We ate breakfast outside and viewed Todi at sunrise and in the changing light. We dined on the expansive terrace facing the cypress allee - and watched sunsets.

The fountain in the formal side garden spouted and burbled. The swallows flew in circular sweeping patterns overhead. And we had total privacy and a unique, great experience living in the Castle.

Most days, we were out and about exploring the countryside and Umbrian towns. The Castle proved to be a convenient location from which to visit Todi, Perugia, Spello, Montefalco, Bevagna, Assisi, Spoleto, Orvieto, and more.

After each day trip, we always anticipated with pleasure returning to the Castle (ideally just in time for a shower, sunset, clinked glasses of wine, and a leisurely dinner). Until the next morning . . . when the sound of birds, the rays of light, the entire Castle and its grounds, and ITALY beckoned. With the Castle as our home.

Owner's Response: I am honored to receive such a beautiful comment, written in such a pleasant style. Your comment is a poetic inspiring tale, not a simple review. You were the Prince and Princess of the medieval castle, I'm pleased to know that the authentic atmosphere of this place has made your holiday special. You have treated the castle very well, as if it were your own home, we were all enthusiastic about you: me who handled the booking, the owners, the property manager and gardener. Can't wait for your return, next year.
