About Jim Freund

Maybe thirty years ago I felt that I should live in Yosemite National Park. At the time, I didn't know if that was even possible, short of being a ranger. I consulted with a real estate agent and found out about Wawona, which is an inholding - that is, it is completely surrounded by Yosemite National Park.

Since that time, every other aspect of my life has revolved around Wawona in some way. It is like a solid center which remains, while everything else changes.

Apart from buying property and buildling on it there, I have had a pretty normal life, or kind of, anyway. I grew up in Highland Park, IL, a suburb of Chicago. I went to school there and later continued at the University of Chicago. Along the way, I met and married my wife, we have three children who are grown up. Throughout all the changes, we have returned to our Wawona home time and again and will do so until we live there once more. That is our goal, no matter how long it takes.

It would be a pleasure to share our home with you, along with the attraction of Wawona and the rest of the Park. I would love to hear what you find meaningful in that experience and if it is a place that you might want to explore further.

Jim Freund purchased this house in 1987

Why Jim Freund chose Yosemite Area

Quite a few rental homes in our community are a bit crowded in- but not ours. Our nearest neighbor is about 50 feet away. They are rarely in house, and we have also installed a privacy fence on our deck. On the other side of the home is a little used Park Service garage, and to the rear, Chilnualna Falls Creek.

What makes this house unique

Our home offers accommodations for large parties (beds for 16, although county regulations permit only 14); all amenities (full kitchen, full laundry, deck, hot tub, gas barbeque, satellite TV, free national and many international locations telephone service, free unlimited wood for wood burning stove in season, game room with Foosball, etc.) and pets allowed. Downstairs is accessible without steps.

Simply perfect!

  • 5 of 5

Friends Lodge in Yosemite was the ideal place for our trip to Yosemite! We look for a couple of things when we travel - is it as advertised, is it the right location to be a base, and is it easy to do. We've done VRBO several times now, and this scored top marks on everything!

We fell in love with the lodge from the photos, and the pictures represent exactly the comfort, set-up, and wonderful atmosphere of the lodge. From the deck overlooking the creek to the large kitchen table/sitting area (both favorites of ours), it was exactly what we had hoped to find. It fit our large group with ease. And the location...

Well, it couldn't get any better. In Yosemite National Park, as close as you can get to the valley floor without staying in one of the lodges there (which would have split up our larger group), easy drive to Glacier Point, and not a bad trip at all to Tuolumne Meadows and the north side (it is on the other side of the valley floor, but what a beautiful drive it is!). With the local market, we could pick up anything we needed. And we loved just hiking down the creek to the river and exploring too!

And the owners were so prompt and personable in answering our questions. It could not have been a more seamless or enjoyable transaction. Customer service was excellent to let us get everything straightened away well in advance, including late arrival.

Not only would we most highly recommend it, we can't wait for an opportunity to come back! We loved it!

Cozy Retreat - great for kids, a little secluded, hiking nearby

  • 5 of 5

I rented The Friend's Cabin for a winter weekend with a group of friends. The home was perfect for us. Plenty to do for everyone - hot tub, fussball, TV, cooking, or hiking. There are waterfalls and several trail heads within easy walking distance. We had dogs and small kids and the house accomodated them easily. Anything we needed (extra TP and towels) was easily gotten at the rental management office. The folks running the office were very friendly and responsive. The cabin is in the park, so it was only 45 min from Badger Pass even with some icy conditions. There was little snow at Wawona's elevation when we were there but it can get snowed in occasionally. The cabin owner is so friendly and kind we felt so welcomed. All of us decided we would try to make this a regular event at The Friend's (Freund's) Cabin!

Great Getaway Spot

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 9 which includes our children and grandchildren stayed at the "Friendly Cabin" in January and we simply loved this place. It is in a secluded location overlooking a creek and the home inside is just wonderfully decorated with all sorts of mementos that make it a home and not just a rental cabin. The furniture was comfortable and the beds the same. It was extremely clean. We love Yosemite and our family has been going there for over 30 years and we have stayed at several places up there, but this cabin was just the best. The owners care about the quality of your stay and the staff took great care of us. We will be returning to this cabin in the future.

Gorgeous Winter Escape!

  • 5 of 5

My 13 fellow companions and myself decided to choose this secluded home as our winter getaway.

We were greeted with much friendliness at the office upon arrival, and when entered the home were just floored with its natural coziness and backyard beauty. Very clean, comfortable, and homey. The deck is huge, and is overlooking a creek (which you can steadily hear at night).

The kitchen utilities, washer/dryer, foosball table, and BBQ were all huge pluses.

We woke up the last morning there to over 6 inches of snow! So gorgeous.

The location is also perfect- about half an hour south of Badger Pass Ski resort, and 45 minutes south of the Yosemite Valley entrance.

Perfect for winter!

COULD NOT HAVE BEEN BETTER

  • 5 of 5

Friends Lodge in Yosemite a great choice for our group.

The pictures represent exactly the atmosphere of the lodge from the deck to the large kitchen table/sitting area.

In Yosemite National Park, as close as you can get to the valley floor without staying in one of the lodges. It is a drive to Glacier Point, and not too bad to Tuolumne Meadows and the north side valley floor, which are both a beautiful drive and you do not have to wait inline to enter and or leave the park. We also walked down to the creek and explored the area - even took a swim and spotted a few fish.

The owners were prompt and personable and customer service was excellent, including late arrival and check out was very simple..

We highly recommend this property and would love to return if we get the opportunity.

Great Extended Family Get Away

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time staying at the Friend's Lodge during our kids' fall break. It was a nice location with all amenities that we needed. The kids very much enjoyed the hot tub and spent early afternoons there. There was plenty of room for everyone to have their own space and importantly we were able to bring our dog along with us. She really enjoyed short hikes around the house and laying on the deck in the afternoon. Our dog is an important family member and it was great to have such a nice location where we could bring her along with us and share this experience. It took a bit of time to get to the valley and to Glacier Point, but I would rather drive to the crowds and be able to leave at the end of the day instead of stuck with all of the tourists during my entire vacation.

The owners and the staff at Redwoods in Yosemite were great and our house was available on time.
