The location is perfect (in the heart of Capitol Hill's best street) for someone on an extended business trip and/or vacation who prefers a different environment vs. a hotel room, and who will treat our home as your own during the short-term stay. The house is located on a Historic St. which is quiet, safe, and within walking distance (blocks) to the famous Eastern Market, Capitol, Supreme Court, Library of Congress, Senate, etc. Also within walking distance are shops, restaurants, grocery stores, two Metro stops, jazz clubs, coffee houses, dry cleaners, Shakespeare Theatre, and the famous National Mall where you can visit the Smithsonian museums for free which include the National Gallery of Art, Museum of Natural History, Air and Space museum, etc.
For those unfamiliar with the term carriage house, let me explain: At the turn of the century, most large Victorian homes had a separate small house in the back of the main house to store the carriages as well as horses. Today, as homes were modernized and renovated, the small houses were converted into living dwellings with a private alley entrance not unlike many apartments in Paris, London, (European cities). There are approximately five carriage houses located behind the main houses on our street. The cobblestone alley is well lit, very wide, short, and of course, very safe.
Our street is one of the safest streets in DC as well as the widest and most beautiful. The house is air conditioned, has hardwood floors on the second floor where the living room, entertainment room, master bedroom and bathroom as well as washer/dryer are located. Ceramic tile is on the first floor with a well stocked kitchen, separate dining room, and powder room. Other amenities include DVD Player, two TV's, Stereo, Cable, Wi-Fi, hair dryer, clocks, as well as linens and towels, etc.
The security deposit is due at or before check-in which is 2 PM. Check out time is 10 AM. Note: If checking-in or checking-out outside posted times an additional fee may apply. References required as well as an Application Reservation must be signed which includes the aforementioned terms.

Kenneth Kimbrough purchased this apartment in 1998
The property was purchased for the owners use and enjoyment. The Carriage House is the owners pied-à-terre and is being made avaliable for occasional use by renters through HomeAway/VRBO. A residential neighborhood just 6 Blocks from the Nations Capitol; Tree lined extra wide street with rows of turn-of-the-century 4 story victorian homes.
I really can't say enough about this ideal location and property. For two middle aged academic types and our teenage son, it really couldn't have been more perfect. My first priority is QUIET and that need was met with style. We took the Metro from Reagan International, arrived at Eastern Market and walked a few lovely blocks to our home. Everything you could possibly need for a trip is there (my son's favorite was clearly WIFI but my husband and I enjoyed having that second half bath). We were close to everything -- 10 minute walk to the Capitol, the Mall, no end of great restaurants, the market itself was incredibly diverse, "our Metro" stop was a few blocks away. It was such a boon not to have to drive a car. Don't miss DC by Foot (we enjoyed the Lincoln Assassination tour, Georgetown, and the Monuments at night). Get familiar with UBER. We ate at Tunnicliff's three times, love Montmartre, Tortilla Cafe, Pete's Diner and we felt very safe walking back to our "home" after 10 p.m. several nights. I will be back.
Each time I've stayed here, I marvel at the owner's trust in making this ideal property available to strangers. It is perfect in every way for a short time stay...although I would have no problem moving in full time if I were to be transferred to DC. For those doing business on Capitol Hill, it's just a few blocks from the Senate and House Office buildings. For tourists, two Metro stations are a short and pleasant walk away, once of which, Eastern Market, has trains directly to Reagan National Airport, as well as to the Smithsonian museums. The other is Union Station, with service to BWI airport and AMTRAK connections to New York, Boston, Chicago and beyond. The neighborhood is quiet and undergoing a dynamic regeneration, offering new restaurants and better coffee at each visit. The house itself was spotless on my stays and although I haven't made much use of it, the kitchen is amply equipped. As a frequent guest at HomeAway properties, I rate this tops among the very best.
The Carriage house is located in a beautiful safe neighborhood in Capitol Hill. We spent 6 nights there April 6-12th; the property was perfect for our needs. The location was fantastic and within walking distance to the Capitol and the Metro line at Eastern Market which made getting around DC very easy. The Carriage house is well equipped with virtually everything you could need while away from home. The house is charming but does have steep stairs to the 2nd level (which were fine for us). The fully equipped kitchen, half bath and dining room are on the 1st floor with the living area, bedroom, full bath, washer/dryer on the 2nd floor. On the day of checkout our outbound flight was at 5p; the owner has a secure vestibule where we could leave our bags and still be able to do some more sightseeing after checkout at 10a – this is a great perk to this property! Local restaurants were great – Jimmy T’s for breakfast, Tunnicliff’s Tavern, Hanks Oyster Bar, Belga Café to mention a few. There is an organic supermarket in Eastern Market and some small corner grocery stores within walking distance. Overall- we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the Carriage House and would stay here again when we come back to DC.
My husband and I , and adult son spent 4 days here sightseeing in DC. This carriage house exceeded our expectations in every way. The location was perfect. A 5-10 minute walk to the Capitol, Supreme Court, Library of Congress, the Mall, and Eastern Market which has several wonderful restaurants and a metro stop. There are also many other restaurants within walking distance from the house. We either walked or used the metro during our visit other than using an Uber to and from the airport, and it worked out very well. The house is nicely furnished and very comfortable. The kitchen, dining room, and half bathroom is on the first floor, then the living room with a pullout couch, bedroom with queen bed, and full bathroom is on the 2nd floor. There was plenty of space for 3 of us where we didn't feel cramped together. It was also nicely furnished with plenty of comfortable furniture to relax after a long day of sightseeing. Ken has made sure that everything that you need is there and you feel like you're at home. He has a book there with all kinds of helpful information about local attractions, restaurants, stores, etc. Also, metro cards that you can use while you are there. He called the morning after we arrived to make sure everything was okay and was very helpful. We will definitely stay there again when we return to DC.
The carriage house was a great place to stay for several reasons. First, we have two teenage boys who can get loud and brought instruments to practice. Because the carriage house is a stand alone building we were able to be as loud as we wanted without bothering an upstairs or downstairs neighbor. In addition, since we live in a house and not an apartment, the carriage house allowed us to keep our privacy as we would at home. Second, its a very nice space, decorated well, clean, and comfortable. It had all the accommodations we needed to cook meals, grill out, use wifi, sleep comfortably, and relax at the end of a long day. Finally, although we used the metro our first day, we ended up walking all other days. The house was only a half mile from capitol hill and the mall - and because the neighborhood felt very safe, we walked everywhere. There are restaurants close by, small grocery stores, and shops to visit that are also in walking distance. Thanks to Kenneth for opening his home. If we come back, we will definitely stay at the carriage house again.
We stayed in the carriage house for a week and found it well-appointed and well located. It had everything we needed, including a welcoming bottle of wine. It was an easy walk to the Capitol and the Mall and the metro was a few blocks away. The neighbourhood was quiet and friendly. The owner was responsive to our queries, which was particularly helpful when our flights were changed due to a blizzard. We have no hesitation recommending this accommodation to others.
We are located 6 blocks from the nations Capitol, and 10 flocks from the Monuments on the Mall.
