About Bernadette Boteilho

In 2006, we purchased our 1st vacation rental home which was Ohia Plantation House. Then in 2007 our neighbor decided that they wanted 2 sell there 2 bedroom/ 1 bath cottage. It was located close to our other home and thought that it would be a wise purchase. This was the beginning of Ohia Paniolo Cottage. Cliff and I decided to do a Paniolo theme which is part of the history of Hawaii.

We try to give our guests the best accommodations possible. This month (October 2009) we replaced the refrigerator and put in a solar water heater system. Planted hydrengeas in the yard and added new plants to the front porch. Cliff and I enjoy giving our guests a place they can call home. Not just a place to stay.

Why Bernadette Boteilho chose Volcano

My husband and I love the cool climate of Volcano. Mauna Loa Estates is a wonderful and relaxing location. It's nice to take walks in the morning, close to the National Park and the neighbors are really great.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you so much for the lovely " home away from home". We so enjoyed the kitchen, so well equipped. The spa was terrific respite after a full day of hiking in the park. The location is ideal for visiting Volcanoes National Park.

The flowers in every room really add the ambience.

Perfect home base for exploring Volcano

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed this house and all the careful thought the owners put into it. From the fresh eggs in the fridge to the comfortable patio spaces every detail reflected a well cared for home which did not go unnoticed. Plus, being 5 minutes from the national park was pretty incredible!!

Comfortable, cute, functional

  • 4 of 5

This easy to access home has two bedrooms, both comfortable, a small kitchen. It has a couple of comfy and cozy covered places to sit outside with a hot tub. Good access to the park. We saw lava three different places, so cool. Only draw back is a mild smell of mildew in the house.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We take pride in giving our guests a clean and comfortable home during their stay. Because of our rainy weather there can be issues in some homes with mildew. This is why we take pride in the cleanliness of our cottage. We have a dehumidifier available that our guests use to remove whatever moisture there is in the cottage. There are ceiling fans in the kitchen, Master Bedroom and loft to provide air circulation when needed.

Clean, peaceful, relaxing and great response fro owners!

  • 5 of 5

Such a great house with nice furnishings and heaters to say comfy when the temps drop. Convenient location to park and store, restaurants and yummy goodies from the owners for breakfast. Would come back in a heartbeat and appreciated all the info (and Christmas card!) from the owners prior to our arrival- helped to make the trip planning easier. Stay here, you won't regret it!!

Charming, Beautiful, Better than Expected (and that Hot Tub...) !!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Ohia Paniolo Cottage for two nights. We wish we had spent a week here. Very spacious, well appointed, and very charming. The subdivision is beautiful, green, and lush with vegetation. The grounds of the cottage are equally impressive. Lots of birds make is a fun place to sit, read, and enjoy the sounds of nature. The cottage had everything necessary to enjoy the visit. Very conveniently located for a visit to the Volcano National Park, or other area attractions.

Bernie is an outstanding host. It is apparent that she wants to make sure all guests enjoy their stay. We were pleased to walk in and see a beautiful spread of sweet bread, fruit (papaya, pineapple, lemon, bananas), chocolate macadamia treats, oatmeal, hot chocolate, and fresh eggs in the fridge. It was more than enough for two mornings of breakfast. We were admiring the beautiful flower arrangements and realized after a couple of minutes that they were fresh and real. How cool is that? The hot tub was awesome, especially after our 11 mile hike to see lava flowing into the ocean. It is larger than we expected and always heated & ready to go.

If we were to return to the area, we would definitely want to stay here again. Thanks :)

Perfect location

  • 5 of 5

This property was perfectly located near the Volcano National Park and at the moment excellent with the recent activity happening a great spot so you can easily go back and forth to view the lava at the crater at any time. The attention to detail for providing the little things (and so much more) for a traveller was greatly appreciated - especially the breakfast. We didn't expect it to be so cold so the hot tub was a blessing to help thaw us out. Very peaceful location.

A Lovely Retreat Near Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

  • 5 of 5

We really loved this place! Right from the moment we arrived we felt welcomed and at home. The owners left us fresh fruit and other goodies which was a lovely surprise! The Ohia Paniolo Cottage was beautiful, clean and well stocked with heaters. The warnings about it being “cooler” up there are serious! But we were able to warm ourselves up with the heaters and hot tub. The hot tub was amazing and we wish we had had more time to enjoy it! The beds were comfortable and also had plenty of blankets to keep the chill at bay.

The house is surrounded by beautiful rain forest and feels very secluded, but is also close enough to some truly excellent restaurants as well as the entry to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Our only complaint about this place is that the outer shower curtain in the bathroom was a little moldy and should probably be replaced. However, that is a minor concern and the house is otherwise as pictured on the site.

Overall, we highly recommend the Ohia Paniolo Cottage and would happily stay here again!
