We thoroughly enjoyed our 6 night stay at Sankofa Guest Apartment. The location was great as it only took 5 minutes to reach the subway or bus with the shops also close by. The apartment was beautifully decorated and it was so cosy when we arrived back after a full day of sight seeing, to enjoy the atmosphere. Edith and Norma are such lovely people and so helpful. We couldn't believe the gorgeous fluffy towels and slippers and dressing gowns for our use. The apartment was exceptionally clean and well maintained and we certainly enjoyed the bottle of wine and chocolates on our arrival (not to mention the sumptuous muffins!). We would certainly recommend it to family and family and have actually done so
Staying at Sankofa Guest Apartment was a wonderful experience. The apartment is stunningly beautiful and has every amenity a traveller could possibly need or desire, even a footspa. The whole apartment is incredibly attractive and it is a pleasure to simply sit and admire the artwork on the walls and the furniture and finishings within the apartment. Our hostesses, Edith and Norma are incredibly warm and helpful. We feel as if we have made friends. It has added an extra dimension to our first-time New York experience to be able to stay in Harlem and be welcomed with such kindness. Within the apartment you will find NYC guidebooks and other helpful printed information to help you take advantage of your time in New York. The apartment's location is fantastic. Catching public transport is a breeze. We favoured the bus during the day to give us a better idea of the lay of the land. The subway is quick and efficient and is only a few blocks' walk through this safe neighbourhood. We walked day and night through the neighbourhood and felt perfectly comfortable. The bed is extremely comfortable and we enjoyed being able to cook breakfast each morning. Being able to wash and dry our clothes each night also allowed us to pack a little lighter than we would otherwise have been able to do. We would never, ever stay anywhere else on our next visit to Manhattan - Sankofa has it all. Thank you Edith and Norma for our wonderful visit. You and your apartment are true gems.
A stunning perfectly located apartment in a row of historic brownstones in vibrant Harlem that the photographs accurately portray. Edith and Norma have created a very clean and well maintained appartment with everything you could possibly want for an enjoyable stay in New York. The spacious appartment itself is full of charm with artwork, furniture, books and soft furnishings depicting Harlem and their heritage.
The bed was extremely comfortable, with high quality linens, pillows and bedspread. There was an abundance of towels, soaps, lotions and tissues etc in the bathroom which all added to the home from home experience. Edith and Norma also provided foodstuffs for your first breakfast, enabling you to relax on your arrival without the need to rush to the supermarket. Much appreciated after a long journey ! Being able to wash, dry and iron clothes was another strength to this appartment. Edith and Norma have thought of everything !
Access to the whole of Manhatten via the subway was really easy ( walk to the subway was less than 5 minutes ) with each journey costing a mere £1.80. No need for a car! It was great to be able to return after exhausting days sightseeing in New York to such comfort. Harlem itself was a great experience. There are lots of cafes and restaurants within walking distance. We liked particularly Cafe Latte and Barrawine. Food shopping was easy too. Right outside the subway station on 116th street on Malcolm X Bvld is The Fine Fare supermarket. Great for picking up supplies whilst on your way back to the appartment.
Central Park is only 10 minutes walk. It is full of activity, whilst at the same time, great to walk through, looking at the different plants, trees, lakes, formal gardens and cheeky squirrels.
Now that we have found this we would not dream of looking elsewhere in New York. It was also reassuring having Edith and Norma on site should there have been any issues..... there wasn't. We will definitely recommend this great home from home to family and friends. Thank you for your fantastic hospitality.
It is hard to write yet another superlative review because it truly has all been well said by so many previous reviewers. But we would like to add our take. And it is simple. This vacation rental created by Edith and Norma is a work of the heart and a work of art. We too have travelled many places using VRBO and Sankofa Guest Apartment is the most thought out and carefully assembled we have ever encountered. It is a gift, it is unique and it is personal. It reveals a generosity of spirit and discernment that is inspiring.
So just a few small and notable details that are indicative and some things that meant a lot to us:
The block of Wusthof kitchen knives that were perfectly sharp. Everything is present for cooking and serving: tools, small appliances, pantry basics, all well edited and organised. And an ample variety of kitchenware, dishes and linens suitable for a whole range of options.
The quality of everything: bed linens, the closets, the furniture, the draperies, the rugs, the art - drawings, paintings, photographs, sculptures, textiles, and the literary library, the travel and navigation information, the local tips. Well considered and not compromised.
The comfort and beauty: Transit is ample and easy. The street is quiet. The whole entry sequence, the stoop and stair hall, the thoughtful architectural restoration, the garden in the back. This is a well cared for and beautiful brownstone in a listed historic architectural district. We felt like we were well situated and somewhere significant. The heating/cooling systems, the water and shower, and all the appliances worked perfectly. The bed is the best one yet. And the extra blankets, pillows and linens along with luxurious robes. Five star.
The warmth and grace: Edith was waiting for us as we pulled up in our car service. We immediately felt welcomed and we felt honoured, even special, throughout our stay. We would go back again just to better know them, to share more time. They are not just great hosts, they are interested and interesting.
We were aware of and concerned about New York’s tough and getting tougher short term vacation rental laws. This apartment, we believe (not a legal opinion), fits the criteria that conform to those statutes. Owners plus one rental unit in building. Thus we feel that this apartment offers a rare opportunity to rent without issues. Hard to find. We looked at hundreds before discovering this special place. And Harlem is the bonus.
We loved our stay at Sankofa and will only stay here when we visit New York. The apartment is beautifully decorated and the building is wonderfully restored. Located in a row of historic brownstones is something everyone should experience. This neighborhood was the friendliest place in NYC. Designer touches everywhere and it's even more beautiful than the photos. Edith and Norma were friendly and helpful. They made us feel welcomed and comfortable from the first communication. We love them and miss them already.
A good bed makes the stay for me and the bed was super comfortable. We awoke refreshed each day. The bed was the perfect mix of firm and soft, the best night's sleep away from home I have ever had. The pillows were a mix of firm and soft to meet everyone's needs. The sheets were soft and the bedding was perfect for the weather. With the bedroom being on the backside of the building, it was quiet enough at night to hear the crickets chirping. A rarity in NYC. There is also a wonderful garden view from the window.
The bedroom and apartment have quiet AC units that quickly cool you down when needed. The kitchen had everything we needed to eat in, cook, bake, and clean up. The living room had extremely comfortable and beautiful furniture. A TV with cable to access anything you need. Free Wifi was fast enough for streaming.
The bathroom had spa quality linens, soaps, lotions, and shampoos. Excellent water pressure in the shower making for great showers. A full size bathtub with plenty of room in the shower made for getting ready in the morning easy. The bathrobes were soft and of high quality. We loved having our own slippers to relax in.
Close to the bus, subway, grocery store, restaurants, parks, and shops made for a comfortable and convenient, yet quiet location. The best food I've ever had in NYC was in Harlem. This neighborhood is for foodies. Edith and Norma gave us great recommendations for local restaurants and venues. They also have brochures and a binder to help you with your stay.
Everything is high end and lovely. From the wooden blinds to the dishes. Details are thoughtful and elegant.
We are very experienced travellers, particularly to North America but, I can say with some confidence, that this is one of the very best apartments that we have stayed in. In terms of its facilities the photos' do not ( and perhaps) cannot do it justice. It is spacious, airy and superbly furnished with a very personal touch. All of the previous reviews are spot on. It is someone's home that is being shared with you. Our hosts, Edna and Norma, were very welcoming and helpful. Generous in terms of what they gave us, ( in terms of their time and wonderful treats given to us on our arrival). Very interesting and knowledgable too. What also attracted us to this apartment was the neighbourhood it is situated in. First of all it is very safe. Harlem is very vibrant, full of interesting places and sites to visit and all very walkable within a fifteen minute, frequent subway journey to downtown Manhattan. More importantly it is probably the last neighbourhood left in Manhatten that still has a genuinely community feel to it. A good mixture of people, excellent shops and eating places but, still with a sense of space to it and wonderful parks and buildings to explore.
Cannot recommend it highly enough. A great place and location to explore.

An amazing one bedroom apartment with everything you need and then some. It was so lovely to be able to spread out and relax after a busy day of sightseeing. The apartment is extremely well equipped right down to dishwasher tablets, laundry detergent, spray starch and a first for me is it had not only a hair dryer, but a straightening iron as well. The apartment has quality appliances and is decorated with beautiful African artefacts. Although it isn't in the busy centre of Manhattan, it is a short walk to bus stops and the subway and takes only minutes to get anywhere. If there is any drawback, it is the 49 steps from the street to your apartment door, but don't let that put you off. The hosts Edith and Norma are very warm and welcoming without being obtrusive. I give it a 10 out of 10.
