We thoroughly enjoyed our 6 night stay at Sankofa Guest Apartment. The location was great as it only took 5 minutes to reach the subway or bus with the shops also close by. The apartment was beautifully decorated and it was so cosy when we arrived back after a full day of sight seeing, to enjoy the atmosphere. Edith and Norma are such lovely people and so helpful. We couldn't believe the gorgeous fluffy towels and slippers and dressing gowns for our use. The apartment was exceptionally clean and well maintained and we certainly enjoyed the bottle of wine and chocolates on our arrival (not to mention the sumptuous muffins!). We would certainly recommend it to family and family and have actually done so
Staying at Sankofa Guest Apartment was a wonderful experience. The apartment is stunningly beautiful and has every amenity a traveller could possibly need or desire, even a footspa. The whole apartment is incredibly attractive and it is a pleasure to simply sit and admire the artwork on the walls and the furniture and finishings within the apartment. Our hostesses, Edith and Norma are incredibly warm and helpful. We feel as if we have made friends. It has added an extra dimension to our first-time New York experience to be able to stay in Harlem and be welcomed with such kindness. Within the apartment you will find NYC guidebooks and other helpful printed information to help you take advantage of your time in New York. The apartment's location is fantastic. Catching public transport is a breeze. We favoured the bus during the day to give us a better idea of the lay of the land. The subway is quick and efficient and is only a few blocks' walk through this safe neighbourhood. We walked day and night through the neighbourhood and felt perfectly comfortable. The bed is extremely comfortable and we enjoyed being able to cook breakfast each morning. Being able to wash and dry our clothes each night also allowed us to pack a little lighter than we would otherwise have been able to do. We would never, ever stay anywhere else on our next visit to Manhattan - Sankofa has it all. Thank you Edith and Norma for our wonderful visit. You and your apartment are true gems.
Norma and Edith's Harlem apartment was perfect from beginning to end. The brownstone is in a lovely street very close to all Harlem has to offer. Getting to midtown and other places in Manhattan is very easy - the 125th street subway is a few blocks away and the express train whips you into midtown in no time at all. There are other lines which take you all over Manhattan. However, coming back to the apartment after a very busy day is absolute bliss. The apartment is so stylish and comfortable and Norma and Edith are genuinely caring about their guest's comfort and happiness. They are the perfect hosts and lovely ladies. We loved Harlem's vibrancy and street life. The Red Rooster is awesome, with great food and music. There are lots of cool bars around 116th street (Mess Hall was a favourite - go for happy hour and an adult happy meal) and good places to eat. Harlem also has some good shopping with street vendors and some outlet stores (Banana Republic, Gap) as well. We had an amazing and memorable first visit to NYC and would so love to come back. We would definitely stay at Sankofa Guest Apartment again. We will be recommending to everyone!
We stayed at Sankofa 5 nights on our first ever visit to NY. We were totally happy with our choice. Edith & Norma supply all the comforts of home in their beautiful appartment... Comfortable bed, beautiful linen and towels, wine, beer and croissants in the fridge plus a dinner voucher to a local cafe ( the food was awesome). Loved the neighbourhood after the hectic pace of sightseeing in the city and the Subway is a short walk away, it was so quick and easy to use for first time users like us. Try the Paris Blues Jazz club just around the corner, its so much fun. We would stay here again in a flash and highly recommend this beautiful apartment. 10 out of 10 ladies you made our visit so much more special.
A wonderful place! The proprietors were excellent, providing helpful instructions about arrival and key pick-up, and useful information about the apartment, prior to our arrival. They met us on arrival and give us a tour of the apartment and answered all of our questions. They remained easily accessible to us during the stay. We very much enjoyed the complimentary treats they provided. The apartment is beautiful--well furnished and decorated, comfortable and clean--a virtual mini-museum of exceptional African art. The location is great--safe neighborhood, easy access to the subway, a number of great restaurants in the area, and a relatively short walk to Central Park. This will definitely be our first choice for a future return visit to NYC.
We found Sankofa by pure chance on the internet, and we are so glad that we did! The reviews from previous guests are exceptionally good, and well deserved. This place is everything that people have said about it, so its hard to add to all those positive comments. We were helped enormously by Edith and Norma in the weeks leading up to our arrival. They reply promptly to e-mails with helpful information about the apartment, the area and NYC in general. When we arrived they greeted us and showed us around and it was obvious that here were two very kind, genuine and friendly people who were just a door bell away should we need them. The fridge was stocked with soft drinks and beers, croissants and jam and a welcoming bottle of wine! We also got a $25 gift card for Cafe Latte, just around the corner and well worth a visit. The apartment is just great...really exceptionally furnished and equipped, making it such a wonderful base to explore NYC from. Subways within minutes, places to eat, shops nearby to stock up on goodies and Central Park a 10 min stroll. The best thing of all was coming "home" after a hectic day of sightseeing, and having your own space to relax, make a drink and have some food. So much better than a hotel room. We have rented places from California to Cyprus, and Sankofa is right up there in what we rate as great places to stay, and will always be in our memories of a brilliant first ever visit to New York. Thank you Edith and Norma for being such perfect hosts, and for arranging a cab for the return trip to JFK. We loved Sankofa and would thoroughly recommend it!
My daughter and I stayed there and had a wonderful time. Edith and Norma were very gracious hosts. The amenities were great, having a washer and dryer was great! If we are fortunate enough to get back to NYC, we will definitely be staying here again!
