This is a charming, quiet, peaceful studio cottage is located in the historic Organ Mining Town site. It is part of a large walled compound on State of NM and National Historic Registries. The owners live on site in the old mercantile store, once frequented by Pat Garrett. There are free range peacocks roaming among the beautiful cacti gardens. The sun rise and set views from the patio and cactus garden are spectacular.
It is minutes from WSMR and NASA. Easy access to NMSU, Las Cruces and Holloman AFB. We are part of the Organ Mountains Desert Peaks National Monument.
Bud and Nancy both graduated from New Mexico State University and are at this point retired. They have two married daughters with families (husbands and four grand kids) living in Las Cruces.
nancy abernathy purchased this cottage in 1973
The compound in which the cottage is located has a very special feel of peace and harmony. Many shade trees and cactus gardens along with the rock buildings and old barns give it a unique ambiance amongst the rugged, stately, and magnificent high desert Organ Mountains. Peacocks roam the area. We bought the properity approx 40 years because of its unique. true rural charm. beauty and history.

We are part of the Organ Mountains Desert Peaks National Monument. Visit near by Las Cruces, Mesilla, Tor C, Silver City, Deming, Alamogordo, Tularosa, Ruidoso, Cloudcroft! Just have a wonderful time in southern NM. Enjoy your rural historic cottage in peace and quiet.
This is the third time my wife and I have rented the Rock Cottage within the last four years. Each stay has been memorable. Nancy and Bud are terrific hosts who take great pride in making sure all of your questions are answered and your needs met. The cottage is perfect for a couple - everything you need is there and more. Organ is a ghost town, so the location is pleasantly "out of the ordinary", but it is also so convenient to the many beautiful sites which the area offers such as the Organ Mountains National Monument, White Sands National Monument, ghost towns, nature trails, and museums (especially the Zuhl Museum on the NMSU campus which is just incredible and a must see). Carlsbad Caverns, Santa Fe, Tucson (AZ), and Silver City are within a days drive and all are worth a visit. Another must is the Farmer's Market which is held every Wed and Sat on the Main Street of Las Cruces. About 8 blocks of downtown are blocked off from traffic and almost everything imaginable is there from foods and produce to arts and crafts to music and dog walking. It really is a happening and just a lot of fun. There is so much to do here you will never be bored, but if you enjoy just relaxing and watching the beautiful birds (or the peacocks that Nancy and Bud tend to in their back yard) or watching the daily magnificent sunsets, this is a great spot. Nancy and Bud have treated us like family for which we are so appreciative. Bottom line - it is perfect for us by every measure!
Bud and Nancy were gracious and welcoming hosts, helpful with information about the area. We fully enjoyed our week in southern New Mexico. The Organ cottage was perfect for a couple, with the added luxury of a jet tub for relaxation after a day of hiking.
This was the perfect place for us! 1st, since we were travelling from North Carolina, Nancy was so flexible with our dates to stay. It is close and convenient to Las Cruces. The cottage was clean and comfortable and perfect and safe for our small dog. Since we came in January, our only regret was we couldn't enjoy the beautiful courtyard area. I wish we could have stayed longer!
We enjoyed our stay at this very charming, historic cottage. It was cozy and relaxing, just the right size for a couple. Beautiful views of the Organ Mountains from the cactus garden, and we enjoyed being visited by a late-season rufous hummingbird. Great location for exploring the Las Cruces area without staying in the center of the city. We loved our day trip to Old Mesilla with lunch at Josefina's, and our visit to White Sands. Nancy and Bud were very helpful with other sightseeing suggestions, and Nancy was kind enough to show us around the town on one of her daily walks. Thank you to a pair of wonderful hosts!
We found this cottage while planning our bucket-list trip to the Hatch Chile Festival. We enjoyed all the comforts of a home away from home from the beautifully decorated interior, comfortable bed, well-equipped kitchen (incl. complimentary fruit basket), and relaxing outdoor patio(s) with amazing views of the mountains. The drive to Hatch was about 45 mins away and the chile festival was a fun experience--and I snagged a red chile wreath which is now gracing my front door in Texas. We also explored Old Mesilla Village (25 min trip) and had a great lunch at La Posta; caught the sunset at White Sands (35 min trip); hiked the birding trail La Cueva in the Dripping Springs Natural Area (20 min trip); and caught another sunset in Aguirre Springs (15 min trip). We spent our mornings on the patio watching and photographing the 5 hummingbirds enjoying the feeder, fueling up before their trip south. We also caught a glimpse of the male and female peacocks next door, playing extremely shy. All in all, this was such an enjoyable trip and we look forward to returning one day, and maybe saving time to relax in the spa next time. Thanks to Nancy and Bud for their friendliness and hospitality.
Absolutely perfect. Original plan was 7 days but were able to extend for 3 more fabulous nights. The cottage is part of an old historic compound, Nancy and Bud lived next door in what was the merchantile. Everything was in true character, old, funky, fun, peaceful and restful, and very well appointed from kitchen to bed and bath. The fragrance from the blooming lilacs drifted through our open doors in the evening, the birds singing and everything waking up from winter sleep made the place almost magical. Our hosts were so thoughtful and kind, we had only to ask and they would give suggestions about most anything you could imagine, sights to see, best foods locations. They new their city very well and enjoyed sharing their knowledge. We will surely visit again.
