Overview

About the property

4 bedrooms, 1 of which an attic: Glicine,Ortensia,Mimosa and Rosa dei Venti

The Villa and the out buildings of "Mereta Castle” date back to 1400. They are surrounded by beautiful greenery, within a hectare of private olive grove, and are located on a beautiful hill overlooking a natural amphitheatre with views down to the sea. It is a place for exclusive holidays where the idyllic feel of the countryside, and the charm “Dolce Vita” are combined with the elegance of the "Master House" and the majesty of the adjacent "Tower".

The rustic interior comes with a precious and charming furniture at the same time.

The residential part of the Villa (400 square meters) consists of a spacious and cozy living room on the ground floor. There are 3 large double bedrooms on the first floor and two bathrooms. There is also an exclusive 50sqm terrace finished in local stone with stunning views of the Ligurian Sea.

On the top floor is an attic with a bedroom with a terrace and veranda overlooking the sea.

From the ground floor you can walk down to a tavern with exposed stone walls, majestic wooden beams, a corner Wine bar and an efficient rustic kitchen wood stove and fireplace.

The site is quiet and romantic, with remarkable panoramic views now towards the peninsula of Portofino and Sestri Levante, then towards the Val d'Aveto and Val di Vara, and on a clear day, looking towards the South, you can see the profile of Corsica's mountains.

The proximity to the sea is only 7 Km which allows a peaceful holiday in the countryside without giving up a daily beach life.

Just 25 km away is the Natural Park of Portofino and San Fruttuoso, and in just 40 min. drive you can reach the famous Natural Park of Cinque Terre.

The Mereta Castle is 180 KM away from Milan EXPO 2015.

Amazing experience in the hills of Italy

  • 5 of 5

This is a large home with a 15th century watch tower, beautiful gardens and many places to eat outside and enjoy the views. The kitchen is well stocked, so many wonderful things to look at inside the home. It was quite hot outside and there is no air conditioning, but it cools off nicely at night and there are screens on all the bedroom windows. The town church has beautiful bells that do ring often, but we did not notice them after the first day. It is a short drive to Chiavari train station and then 20-30 minute train to the western towns of Cinque Terre. There is a restaurant close to this home, but we did not have a chance to eat there. There are many beaches nearby and this home could be used as a base to visit many towns in the area. The town of Chiavari had plenty of shopping, restaurants, an arts and crafts area and a harbor. A very fun experience we will never forget. So very thankful to our hosts and their crew.

A truly unique house with lovely vistas

  • 5 of 5

We were visiting with our 2 college aged daughters and their friends and loved the home and surrounding area. Our favorite place was the large terrace where we spent most of our time enjoying the views, stars and fresh mountain air. Angelica was an important part of our stay with her eagerness to answer any questions about activities in the area and restaurants. Also so helpful to make the arrangements for us since we don't speak Italian. I enjoyed shopping at the local markets and cooking dinners for us to enjoy on the terrace after a busy day of sightseeing. The kitchen was well appointed. It is a long winding road up the to house so do plan on 20 minutes to/from the highway; however this provides you with cooler air, beautiful views and completely away from the busy tourist scene. We did rent a 7 passenger van which was difficult but not impossible to navigate the winding, narrow roads and parking. No a/c but we were fine sleeping with windows open in early June. Loved hearing the birds and church bells very close by. This home gave us a unique and local feeling experience which 3 rooms in a hotel/resort could not.

Lovely property

  • 5 of 5

We recently spent a week at Maretta Castle and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The house is well equipped with comfortable beds, a large kitchen and plenty of gathering spaces. The terraces and gardens are outstanding! Angelica, the house manager, was warm and welcoming and very helpful in responding to our questions. There is a convenient grocery near by, a wonderful restaurant and nice hiking trails. I would definitely recommend this property.

Italy, like you have always dreamed it to be!

  • 5 of 5

The moment we drove up to the Castle Tower, (built circa 1470 A.D.), all four of us were enthralled by its simple but ancient beauty and strength. Parking your rental car is spacious and secured by an automated gate.

A centuries old suit of armor stood guard in the foyer as were greeted by our wonderful hostess, Angelica, and led room by room through the villa. The rooms are spacious, comfortable and appointed with interesting art and antiques throughout. The Owners are very generous and accommodating. The rooftop balcony has a magnificent view of the valley and the Mediterranean Sea 900 feet below.

The multiple outdoor gardens were in full bloom and a delight to enjoy any time of day or evening. We were enchanted to be awakened by bells in the nearby cathedral that ring at 7:00 a.m. each morning.

A couple of good restaurants are nearby and several more are a few kilometers away in the valley below. There is also a mini-market nearby where we practiced our Italian and our sign language. The setting is very private and idyllic. It felt like a walk back in time and history.

We used this location as our base to visit Sta. Marguerita, Portofino, Genova, Livorno, Cinque Terre, and Florence during our four day stay. (Parking in Florence is almost non-existent. Take the train.)

Finding the exact location was our only difficulty. The villa is located on a mountain ridge several kilometers up a winding road the from the town below. Two separate GPS devices had trouble finding it using the street address. However, once we entered the Latitude / Longitude coordinates all of the GPS devices took us right to the gate every time.

We used these GPS coordinates:

44 degrees, 21 minutes, 05.01 seconds N

9 degrees, 18 minutes, 56.64 seconds E

This is visiting the Italian countryside like it was meant to be. You cannot go wrong choosing this wonderful place. You will take a 1000 photos and will long remember this truly unique experience. No I am not a relative of the Owner. And I don't often write reviews, but this was exceptional. We would have stayed longer if our schedule had allowed it.

Beautiful view and quaint town! An excellent experience

  • 5 of 5

We stayed 3 nights in this wonderful castle! We had a lovely stay. The host was warm, welcoming, and very helpful. She arranged a lunch for us at an authentic Italian restaurant in the little village that was delightful. The view from the back porch is amazing! Everything was as described.
