The Old Bakery is a newly converted 4 room flat with its own entrance through the garden. The front of the old great stone oven is still intact and now working as a fireplace both on front and back of the wall and in addition a cozy wood burning stove adds warmth and charm to this eclectic holiday home. The flat has electric panel oven and electric underfloor heating also. It has a modern kitchen and bathroom, two double beds (each 120 cm plus two single beds). It makes this ideal for 2 couples or one couple with 2 or 3 kids. 4 to 6 good friends are also welcome of course! The two new additional rooms are at the back of the old bakery and with its grand arch makes an almost bodega-like atmosphere! The bathroom is reached from both the front and the rear rooms. Under floor heating makes it a very comfortable place to be. WIFI, bed linen, towels etc are all included. This holiday home is situated in a very central and popular yet quiet area.

About Morten PR Russell Wedén
Trained in London and worked as a graphic designer, film critic and editor. Settled in Oslo with partner and 4 children. Through HomeAway we run 2 rental places in Oslo apart from this one listed here (property 452128 in St.Hanshaugen and property 1729502 also in Grünerløka and one in Malta (property 413710 – Senglea, Grand Harbour). Through 5 years we have only pleasant experiences with our guests.

Why Morten PR Russell Wedén chose Grünerløkka
The apartment is situated on its own ground floor of the building which dates from 1870, situated at Upper and Cross (Øvre gate and Korsgata between music venue «Blå» along the Akerselva river and bespoke restaurant «KAMAI» (japanese) and «Markveien Mat & Vinhus» and «Dr.Kneipp» in a very quiet yet central area at the lower southwest corner of Grünerløkka. You will also find the art gallery and wine bar «Syng» 50 metres away – perfect outdoor area for sunny days by the riverside. From here a variety of shops, supermarket, «Wine Monopoly», cafés and restaurants are only 2 minutes walk away. Make sure you visit the popular «Mathallen» (Food Hall). There are 3 parks close by, and for recreational purposes a pleasant walk along the Akerselva river is recommended. In the weekends there are both market days and music venues at «Blå» (Blue). The New York Times recently included the walk along the river here in its «Top Ten Streets of European Cities» contest.
What makes this Apartment unique
The Botanical Gardens and The Edvard Munch Museum is well within walking distance (to the east), so is the Oslo Town Hall (to the west) with Akershus Castle and fashionable Aker Brygge (where you can even swim). From here small ferries whisk you out to numerous idyllic islands in the fjord and of course to the Bygdøy peninsula with its Kontiki -, Fram-, Viking Ships- and Folk Museums. But apart from these attractions, there is hardly any reason at all to leave Grünerløkka. You’ll find everything here.

Unique place and enjoyed the neighborhood.
We loved our stay The only thing that would have made it better would have been if it had info
We loved Oslo and the apartment was near local restaurants and stores. It would have been great if there was information on buses and transit to navigate getting around. A map marked where we were would have been helpful. The WiFi only worked in the kitchen. Regardless we had a wonderful stay.
Firstly: This review relates to The Old Bakery where these guests stayed (not the Townhouse). Secondly: A comprehensive map with all the info regarding buses, trams, trains and underground network was sent to the guests five and a half months before arrival (at the point of booking). A detailed description of the property and a location map was also sent them at the same time. In addition, all this info was printed and laying in the window sill. As I myself was away sailing when the guests arrived I am sorry I could not point it out as I did not get any messages about it. As the Old Bakery is located in the basement of this 150 year old house, the walls are incredibly thick and wifi signals have problems penetrating all of them as the router is situated two floors up. But I am glad to hear the wifi worked in the kitchen/dining room - and the main thing - that you had a wonderful stay!
I knew this place was old and would have character, which is why I was drawn to the it... The only standard I have upon arrival of a rental is cleanliness. About 10 minutes after we arrived I noticed the my kids feet were black from walking barefoot in the old bakery. I started taking notice of how dusty and dirty the place was, we then spent almost 2 hours sweeping mopping and dusting the place so we could muster the courage to not checkout that moment! ( I have photos of all of it)
If you have allergies this is not the place for you. It smells of must and mold and is very dusty. I killed at least 3 spiders around our bed and not to mention the rats in the wall behind the bed in master bedroom. You can also hear every move you your neighbor makes in the room next-door (even foot steps). The wifi is worthless, it barely works. We paid for five nights and left after the second night. I emailed the owner to let him know about all of these things and asked for only 1 night to be reimbursed, he then sent a very condescending email back saying "he let us check in early and and we had moved our dates around" ( a month prior to checking in) so he would not give us our money back. As if those things should have any barring on what condition the place should be in we checked in...
At this point I don't even care about the money, its the principal. The pictures posted of the outside is not anything like it looks in real life, there are piles of bricks everywhere and miscellaneous junk sitting around. The pictures of the inside do look as is but, only dirty apron arrival.
The only thing this place has working for it is the location.
Oh yes - the BAD REVIEW: Unfortunately one cannot shield oneself from these rare outbursts. In this instance the guests changed their plans (again) and left early, then demanded a refund afterwards. I always address any complaints and try to rectify them immediately if I can, but making complaints after your stay is ended is counterproductive as then it is too late to rectify them. I do not agree with this guest’s version of all the horrid details she claims, and view it as a spiteful revenge because I did not agree to a refund. There have been good reviews both before and after this bad one... so I just hope that prospective guests can see through this one!
really enjoyed our stay. very nice, charming place. great location.
wonderful time in Oslo. and terrific place to stay. lots of charm, interesting history. plenty of room and good location.
What more can one add? The Old Bakery obviously fits the bill!
Quirky basement flat in superb location
Ideally situated for all amenities and a short stroll to the tram for city centre although can walk. The place had everything we needed 😁 thank you for our stay
The Old Bakery is in a quiet corner of this hip and lively area of central Oslo called Grünerløkka. It is indeed quirky - a converted basement bakery with large windows in the front room to - and its own entrance from - a small garden. It consists of 4 rooms and a modern bathroom (entrance from two separate bedrooms), the front of the old bakery oven is retained as a fireplace, and where the huge oven once was is now the cozy sitting room and master bedroom (two interconnecting rooms), which benefit from an additional fireplace. There is also a wood burning stove and underfloor heating in most of the apartment. It has a kitchen area and bed linen, towels etc. are provided.
Charming and quirky
This is a great place to stay - the river is nearby, there are shops and restaurants nearby, and the walk to the station is easy and not long. Plus, the host is friendly and helpful. The bathroom is very small, but there's room for lots of people to sleep. We loved this location!
Please note: This review is for The Old Bakery (Unit 3846023) – not the Townhouse (Unit 3305290), which is another unit in the same complex.
As Grünerløkka is very central, it is a pulsating area with lots of activities going on. You will find anything you like while shopping or just strolling along here. Emergency hospital (Legevakten) is 650 metres away from the apartment, so you are in safe hands for any eventuality.
