It’s a short walk to three of the best beaches in Kona. The first is White sands beach which the locals call Magic Sands swimming, boogie boarding, and snorkeling in the clear blue water are a must... On the south end of the Beach Park is a secluded cove that is perfect for snorkeling or shore entry scuba diving with volcano swim thru tubes.
In the center of the Park is an ancient Hawaiian Heiau (spiritual place).
Short Walk south is the famous snorkeling beach, Kahaluu. Kahaluu offers easy access to the undersea population of green sea turtles and colorful tropical fish of every description.
Gentle waves on the far side are great for easy surfing, with a surf shop across the street if you need lessons.
After a glorious day in the sun, it is just a short stroll back to White Sands Beach to watch a spectacular romantic Kona sunset or Should you tire of the ocean water or when you just want to relax in the sun, away from the beach.
Watch the sunset each evening from the comfort of your lounge chair, mai-tai in hand, on the lanai. If you get lucky, you may see the famous green flash.
In the living room you will find a huge custom sofa that swallows you up! It’s so comfortable you may not want to get out!

Since this picture, we are much much older, we have a 5 yr old and 7 yr old now! Both made in Hawaii. We had been coming to Hawaii for 7 years before moving here full time with our family a few years ago.
Dana purchased this house in 2007
We love being close to the beach. The area is very kid friendly. We can walk to the beach in 5 minutes and when the kids get tired, be back home quickly. Magic Sands beach is a good family beach.
The house is very open and airy. It has a great Hawaiian feel.
The house is designed to satisfy different requirement, from one family to 15 persons group, like us. It is closed to the Magic Sands Beach, whose sands are soft and white. We enjoyed staying at the house. It was easy to enter and Dana and Joe were ready to offer their help. Thanks for give us 1 more hours to collect our stuffs. They are really nice!
We recently spent a week in this Kailua-Kona house with 18 people - 9 adults and 9 kids ranging in age from 3 months to 12 years old. The location is great, right in the heart of everything - and there was plenty of space for everyone to hang out alone or together. The inside living room has a huge couch (big enough for 9 children plus a couple of adults!) and the outside dining table in the screened in porch was a good place for communal meals. The owners were so great and very responsive to emails. They were helpful in making sure we had everything we needed for our stay, including two pack and plays, a high chair, lifejackets for children.
The house was well stocked with spices in the kitchen and fridge, beach toys (and a whole bucket of water shoes), beach towels.
A few things you should know, especially if traveling with a wide age range of people like we were:
1. The six bedrooms are separated on two floors with three rooms on each floor. The bedrooms on the ground floor can only be accessed from an outside door, which can be a concern if you have little ones. Two of the three bedrooms upstairs are also accessed by external doors, but at least these are within the lockable screened-in-porch area. There is only one bedroom that adjoins the kitchen/living room.
2. Though there are screens on the windows there is no glass, which makes sound an issue if you have people getting up and going to sleep at different times. The upstairs back bedrooms back on to the pool so any late or early pool noise would be an issue if someone is sleeping. Also, the bedroom attached to the upstairs living room is completely open at the top so absolutely not soundproof at all.
3. The back bedrooms can get really hot, even with all fans going. They don't get access to the night time breeze like the front bedrooms do.
4. The pool is great for kids because it's shallow, but for adults consider it more of a dip pool.
5. The house is in a great location however between Kahalu'u Beach and Magic Sands. But I would not consider it walking distance to Kahalu'u with kids, and with toddlers/preschoolers we didn't walk to Magic Sands either...not with all our beach gear in tow!
Overall, we had a great week on the Big Island. There was so much to see and do we couldn't get it all in. The night manta snorkel/dive is a must do. We also chartered a boat for a morning with the dolphins/snorkeling. Mahalo!!
My family of 18 had the time of our lives. The house met all of our needs and the owners are lovely. The location of the house is close to beaches, restaurants, and recreation.
Beginning of may 2016, we went to Hawaii for 2 weeks, escaping snow and cold weather in Montreal Quebec!! We did a bike training camp. Ten cyclists, everybody was happy, easy acces to the beachs, Kona, cycling roads...We had all we need and more.
We will probably return for next training camp.
Thanks Dana and Joe
See you soon
I rented this space for a 5-day retreat.
My group and I loved this home! It far exceeded my expectations.
It had everything we needed. I will definitely rent this home again for future retreats.
Dana was super helpful and accommodated our requests.
Thank you again, Dana! : )
We stayed for a week with extended family. The property is a good choice for a large family, as it has many bedrooms, including a separate apartment, and a well equipped kitchen. We stopped by Costco early in the week and were well set up. If you're not self-catering, the nearest restaurants are not particularly close, with only one within easy walking distance.
The beaches are an easy walk. It's a lovely neighborhood. The close beaches can be too much for small kids when the surf is up, but that's true for all of the Kona beaches. We were also pleased with all the beach toys available. The laundry facilities were first rate and quite helpful. There's a trolley bus line along Alii Drive that helps folks get around. If you're driving, the newly completed La'aloa Drive will get you right there from the belt road.
There were a few minor issues. First, other than the apartment, it's a traditional Hawaiian lanai style house. That means that the windows don't have glass. This isn't a problem in terms of the weather, but it does mean that noise does travel within the house. Also, as advertised, the place comes with two rolls of TP per bathroom. Pick up extra when you go shopping! The advertised check in and check out times are rather late and rather early, respectively, but the owners were very flexible. None of these issues significantly impacted us, but you may want to make sure you plan around them.
Overall, it was a lovely place for our family reunion.
