About Dana

Since this picture, we are much much older, we have a 5 yr old and 7 yr old now! Both made in Hawaii. We had been coming to Hawaii for 7 years before moving here full time with our family a few years ago.

Dana purchased this house in 2007

Why Dana chose Kailua-Kona

We love being close to the beach. The area is very kid friendly. We can walk to the beach in 5 minutes and when the kids get tired, be back home quickly. Magic Sands beach is a good family beach.

What makes this house unique

The house is very open and airy. It has a great Hawaiian feel.

Great for our group of 18

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here in Kailua-Kona in December 2017 to celebrate a group of friends’ birthdays. Overall, we had a wonderful time and we enjoyed our stay in this house.

The living room upstairs was very cozy and inviting. There was a huge couch around the TV, and our group had a wonderful time just hanging out on the couch or around the dining table. There was also a balcony right outside of the common area that people could sit and talk on. It was nice that you could go outside for some relative quiet yet still feel connected to everything that was happening inside. In fact, every bedroom had a balcony, which was quite a privilege. It was December, and the temperature in the house was perfect with some windows opened. The whole house was clean and well-maintained.

Dana and Joe were very responsive to our needs. They sent a friend to check up on us on our first day. The friend helped us resolve some issues with hot water in one of the showers, and the toilet in another bathroom. They really made sure we felt 100% taken care of!

The amenities of the house were convenient. We had access to two sets of laundry machines, though we only ended up using the upstairs machine. This is very helpful when you are doing lots of outdoor activities and go through exercise clothing quickly! There were also plenty of towels. We were worried that we wouldn’t have enough, but it wasn’t a concern, even with 18 people in the house. There are only 2 toilet paper rolls per bathroom, but we each brought a roll and did not run out. The kitchen was well-supplied with an assortment of pots and pans, utensils, and dinnerware. There were also some basic supplies like salt, pepper, and oil, and appliances like a rice cooker and a coffee maker.

The location of the house was also convenient - it was a 5 minute walk from Magic Sands Beach, which was great for swimming, and a 15 minute walk from Kahalu’u Beach, which has a surf shop near it where you can rent snorkel gear. The house was also a short drive from Kailua-Kona.

The house felt very connected to the outdoors, what with the lanai, the pool, and the arrangement of the rooms. We got some animal house guests - we didn’t mind the geckos, but the flying cockroach and spiders scared some of us.

The biggest downside is that due to the nature of the house, there is no main door through which to enter and exit. That meant that every time we left the house, we had to make sure that all doors were locked. A bit inconvenient!

Well equipped house for a large group

  • 5 of 5

My group of 10 totally enjoyed our stay in this beach house during the Christmas week.

Just as described, the house has 6 bedrooms, all with private bathroom, and the bedrooms are well separated to provide privacy between sub-groups. The kitchens (yes 2 of them) are well equipped. And, the house is well equipped with boogie boards and beach toys!

We had unexpected issue at check-in time due to the cleaning lady being sick, but the owners made the best efforts to rectify the situation and we appreciated the effort!

Family Friendly

  • 5 of 5

The property is great for a group. Plenty of space and separate rooms for privacy, and great spaces for gathering, eating and socializing. Neat clean and everything worked well. Oh, barking dog greeting next door was sort of a bummer, but we were the intruders.

Great house for our family of all ages

  • 5 of 5

My family of 14 people ranging from 4 yrs old to 67 were so sad to leave Hawaii this trip. We had a great time at this perfectly located and equipped beach house. It is comfortably furnished, but we didn't have to worry so much about our 4 children ruining anything, because the furniture and fabrics are all heavy duty and kid proof. The pool was much fun when we got tired of spending our day at the beach. The beach is only a short distance from the house. The kitchen is well stocked with equipment. The beds were comfortable. Joe even supplied us with a pak and play for our 1 yr old. The house doesn't have glass windows. It is a beach house with screens and louvers, which let us smell the ocean and hear the waves. There was no way we could afford a beach front home, but this home is so close to the ocean-it satisfied our need for "ocean" while being affordable for us all. There is plenty of parking and the huge screened in lanai was perfect for evenings meals and get together.

One of our toddlers tried to flush a wash cloth down a toilet, but Joe (owner) came right over to get the toilet unplugged. Thanks Joe! Dana gave us many suggestions as to what to do and where to go with a family our size of varying ages. Thanks Dana! We really loved the kids beach near Kukio.

I highly recommend this home to you and your family! You will love it too.

Amazing rental, clean, comfortable!

  • 5 of 5

This was a fantastic visit. The home was clean and had a great island feel. The beds are comfortable, and there was lots of space for our large group. We enjoyed hanging out by the pool and gathering in the indoor lanai together. The beaches were close, as was town. The home had a nice cross breeze due to the screened windows, so we were comfortable even in the hot August weather. There were no bugs in the house. Sure, they are outside, as this is the tropics, but we were careful to keep the kitchen clean and food sealed, and we had no issues. Joe and Dana were wonderful with suggestions and were always available to answer any questions. We will return and stay in this home next time we visit. Thank you for sharing your home with us!

We did not realize that the house we are renting had no airconditiong.

  • 3 of 5

I wish that we had investigated a little more about this house. This house has no air conditioning and some of the rooms are simply unlivable in hot summer days and nights. The POOL was full of dead mosquitos and other bugs so we could not use it either. We also saw some heavy duty roaches in the house in addition to other bugs. Many of our family members moved out to other places. We were very frustrated with our choice.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your feedback, as we take all reviews very seriously and strive to make your experience at our property the best that it can possibly be! We are very sorry that our home was not up to your expectations. If these issues were reported during your stay, there are measures we could have taken to help make your vacation a more positive experience. The past few summers have had some hurricane or tropical storm remnants that have played havoc with our usually reliable trade winds. This does take the natural AC away (cooling trade winds) and makes it hotter than usual. Most homes in Hawaii are not air conditioned. There are ceiling fans in every room, plus additional floor fans are available. The best part of the tropical islands is the weather and the ability to live with open lanai/patio doors most of the year. As people like to come and go through those open doors, so do the pests. Hawaii is the tropics with its share of bugs that fly mostly around in the rainy season (which is mostly mid-June/July/Aug. Along with the scheduled pest control visits, the pest control company visited immediately, and they have sprayed and baited for all pests. We inform renters not to leave any food out. We also have a professional pool service come out every Wednesday. There is also a pool skimmer with a pole hanging on the fence if needed. We apologize for not meeting your expectations. Just to help you in the future, you may find it beneficial to spend more time reading the property description before selecting your next vacation rental, as all of our photos that you saw are accurate and up-to-date, so we are unclear why you chose our tropical home if you do not find the decor, fixtures, no AC and general layout appealing. We let you know in our welcome email with helpful info and directions and with signs at the house that if any problems should arise, the guest can contact us no matter what time of day or how small the issue is. We live on Island only 10 minutes away. We delight in making sure our guests achieve a 5-star experience, and it pains us that this didn’t happen with your stay. Mahalo, Joe
