Harry's El Escondite offers 1 of 4 secluded studio-apartment style house in famous Playa Tamarindo, Costa Rica and is a favorite 'hideout' for both returning surfers and first timers. The cabina is situated around a pool and garden setting on a single 1/4 acre property. El Escondite has accommodations for individuals up to a party of 3 in a cabina.
All guests get free use of surfboards and bicycles. A surf guide and lessons are also available for those new to the area or to the joys of surfing.
El Escondite is located at the end of a quiet and private dead-end road; just a short walk to the surf breaks and the attractions in downtown Tamarindo.
A cabin can sleep up to 3 people and has a kitchen, large bathroom with hot water, air-conditioning and cable TV.
El Escondite also has laundry facilities, phones and wireless Internet access.
A pool, BBQ, hammocks, and a 2nd floor sundeck with lounge chairs round out a perfect place to hangout after surfing.
In the beginning I came to Tamarindo Beach to take time off from skiing. A knee injury had forced me to leave my home in Whistler, B.C. to pursue other activities during the winter. I tried surfing while recovering here in Tamarindo and ended up preferring the waves over snow and the beach over the mountains. Over the years I've grown to love this small beach town and eventually decided to move down permanently. El Escondite means 'the Hideout' in Spanish and that was the start of Harry's hideaway.
Harry purchased this studio in 2001
The 'El Escondite' grounds was established in 2001 and over the years has been expanded, renovated and improved to keep up with needs of clients. The cabinas are Tico style with outdoor living kept in mind yet has all modern the conveniences expected from a quality hotel. Relax and hideout at this quiet, private and secluded villa.
Free use of surfboard and bicycles for all guests. The cabinas have flat screen HDTV's with access to the web and a media server that includes a large selection of surf movies as well as the latest featured films. A music and an ebook library is also available.
Awesome time Harry!
Thanks so much. I can't believe the week went by so fast. I'm just getting over paddling the estuary!!
you are a terrific host - who knows, maybe next time we meet at Nogie's we'll be toasting a new land purchase and another Whistlerite in Tamarindo!
Can't wait to see the pool finished.

Harry: you rock man. your place looks even better in person than it does online. all the ammenities we could want- LOTS of boards and bikes too. but the most valuable service you offer your guests is your expert local knowledge.
from where to eat, surf, and grab a brew to how to solve computer problems, harry is on top of it. i would definitely reccommend harry's as a place for first-timers to costa rica. i couldnt be happier with my experience.
We spent the second part of our visit to Costa Rica in Tamarindo at Harry's place. My wife and I went for our 5 year wedding anniversary. We spent the first part in the Lake Arenal area and looked forward to getting to the beach. This is a great spot to enjoy this town. The cabina was cozy and sufficient for a stay here. You can walk everywhere, but we rented a car for our entire trip. We aren't young bucks anymore so we were able to get to many beautiful remote beaches outside of the more younger, party type or tourist vibe much of the town can bring. There are great places to eat and drink in the town, regardless. One of the best part about coming back after a day out was jumping in the awesome pool. The outdoor grill area is great too after visiting local grocery stores. Harry has the place hooked up with some awesome technology. We got to geek out on it since I work in the IT field. He is super smart and knowledgeable in this area, but also in general. Harry was very up front and transparent throughout, as well as a great communicator. All of my questions always got answered before and during our trip. What information is given on here and through him is very accurate, so not real surprises. If this is something that seems right up your alley, go for it. It was a pleasure getting to know him and look forward to visiting again. We also met some great people from Canada who were also staying there at the time. We miss him, his dog Don't, and Costa Rica in general.
We stayed with Harry for a little over a week in July of 2015. This place was amazing. The bikes and surfboards he had on site were an extra bonus for us as well. We rented a car and drove in from the Liberia airport. It was a little difficult to find, even with GPS and printed directions, but that's the point of the El Escondite. Harry provided us with great recommendations for places to go and things to do. The property was well kept and we had everything we needed. The splash pool was an added bonus. After a hot day it was awesome to jump in really quickly after the beach. The upstairs common cook area was also amazing. He has everything you need to cook a feast! Internet and streaming connections were great. We loved hanging out with Harry a few nights at the property as well. Overall, we LOVED our stay and would highly recommend any of his bungalows. Thanks, Harry!!!
Harry's has all the bases covered. My wife and I went here for a honeymoon. We took the pubic bus from the Liberia airport (US$2.50 each) and only had to walk the last four blocks. You could also take a private or shared shuttle directly there if you're willing to pay the US$40 to US$90. We arrived to find a well stocked cabina including coffee, milk, lots of toilet paper and cold water. If you don't see something just ask. Blender? No problem. Fresh limes? Just take a freshly picked lime from the collection. We rode the provided bikes with the provided boards to the beach (or about a 20 minute walk) to surf every day. Sometimes we'd come back to cool off in the pool before heading down to watch the sun set and take advantage of two for one happy hour beers daily too (sometimes we jut stayed down on the beach or beach bar for lunch). Harry is a funny and knowledgeable host and makes a point of doing everything he can to make the trip great. I recommend this VRBO to anyone who is hoping to get the most bang for their buck which is exactly what I was going for. You really feel at home very quickly here. I could have stayed for months and I'm sure I will be back.
If you’re reading this review, you are probably already looking for a place to chill, to cool off, to feel safe and secure as you put your head down at night in a comfy bed, to have coffee in the morning while you let your friends know where you are, to pick a lime off a tree beside your pool while watching a troop of Howler monkeys lounge in the trees above you. You also probably want a place where you can walk to the beach (take a surfboard with you if you want) or into town (ride a bike if you choose) in 10 minutes or less. Maybe you just want to read a book and have a cold drink (remember that lime you picked) while lounging beside the pool or lying in your hammock in front of your cabina. If staying in touch is important, Wi-Fi is strong, reliable, and you have access to an incredible library of music, books and movies off the NAS. All of these things happen at Harry’s. The other thing that happens at Harry’s is Harry. Always smiling. Always ready to answer your questions: where to eat, what beach to visit, who to talk to, how to get the most out of your tech devices, where Happy Hour is on any given day. Harry is always there when you need him and not there when you don’t. Speaking of Don’t. What a treat. Greets you when you first show up; checks on you once in a while to make sure everything is ok (maybe to get a scratch behind the ears), lets Harry know when something is happening on the property; provides 24/7 security. Don’t is there and not there just like Harry. My wife and I spent 2 incredible weeks here. We met incredible people (shout out to Kathy and Alex). We went to amazing places (do go to Playa Conchal). We saw spectacular sunsets every day (sail on the Antares if you get a chance). We spent wonderful time with Harry and Don’t and we consider them our friends! We’ll be back Harry. Each and every day here, we had a moment. You know that moment….! We’ve all had them. We look around us, we smile, we breathe deeply, we count our blessings, and some of us say to the universe “hey Ma, look at me now!”
Harry’s El Escondite may not be a 5-Star Luxury Resort but it’s big on 5-Star service including “Don’t”, Harry’s awesome "man's best friend" (the best trained dog I’ve ever met!), who is always there to greet you and ensure you arrived home to the property when you go out, especially during the evening. Harry is accessible to help with whatever you need, or have any questions about anything…seriously, anything. The accommodations can be described as a little rustic. We stayed in the Green Cabina which is the smallest of the 3 cabins, but it was very comfortable and most doable. The Blue Cabina and the Orange Cabina were bigger, but we loved how dark and quiet the Green Cabina was at night. (I'm sure the other two cabins were the same.) The bed was excellently comfortable (best sleeps I had in forever), the AC was the perfect temperature, the bathroom was most adequate. I can be a “little (very) picky” about accommodations, but I soon learned the rustic atmosphere is what contributed to the most laid-back vacation of my life, and I’ve been extremely fortunate to experience many very comfortable and laid-back holidays. The shower was a little tricky to maintain a decent temperature, but it did the trick and I chalked it up to the “rusticness” of Costa Rica. The pool was the perfect size for cooling off after a few hours walking Playa Tamarindo or Playa Langosta or Playa Grande, where there was always a nice breeze. It’s only about a 12-minute walk to the beach from Harry’s. I’ve been used to being right on the water for most all of my vacations, but I have to admit that I didn’t miss being on the water because Harry’s was a welcome quiet reprieve after being on the water or at the beach. Harry’s has bicycles and surfboards should you like to take advantage of using them. It was a blessing to have access to wi-fi, and also to movies and e-books that Harry provides. Harry is a wizard at anything internet-related, which came in handy for us. Upon arriving in Tamarindo, it was windy and the dustiness really caught us off guard. Harry’s El Escondite didn’t experience the wind and dust, and after a couple of days the wind subsided and we fell in love with Tamarindo and of course, Harry’s. I cried as I was leaving, so you know how much we enjoyed ourselves, and did not want to leave. We have every intention of going back. We definitely miss Harry, Don’t and Tamarindo. You probably have figured out that we highly recommend Harry’s
