Enjoy a private swim in your own pool then cook up something in the gourmet kitchen and outdoor BBQ! Check out the local orchid gardens and coffee fields, or drive to the top of an active volcano, surf Costa Rica's legendary waves (just 30 minutes away with the new highway!!), hike in some of the country's many national parks, soak up private waterfalls and so much more. Perhaps one of its best attributes is it's central location to the rest of the country's magnificent sites!! High speed Wi-Fi is available 24/7 throughout.

What to do !:): Our bilingual property manager can help you plan all kinds of day trips and overnights if you wish to explore as much of this beautiful country as possible. Costa Rica has so much to offer, from trips to nearby cloud forests, checking out its many volcanoes - active or not, hiking breathtaking waterfalls, exploring many of its dense jungles, taking a catamaran to a private island, or even do a little of it's famous deep sea fishing. The wild life will astound you. There are many adrenaline charged activities like white water rafting, zip lines ATV riding, or jet skiing in the open ocean for those who relax by supercharging. For those who wish to relax a little more gently, take a canopy walk, go birding, check out the beautiful wild orchids and bromeliads everywhere, shop in farmer's markets, listen to huge flocks of parrots gather in the town square at dusk, visit a local coffee farm and roasting plant, or get a massage by the pool - happily, we've got that covered too! Or just stay at the villa and disconnect from the fast pace world and rediscover the wonders that the natural world has to offer.

About Liz

Liz Duffy is a freelance food stylist based in New York City. Judd Pilossof is a freelance food photographer also in New York. We work for food magazines, cookbooks and advertising clients. We have 2 daughters and come to Costa Rica as often as possible. We built our home in Atenas because of the unique views, climate and wonderful small town (non touristy) feel that we enjoy. We have put our heart and soul in making this house our own style and we think you will love it too.

Liz purchased this villa in 2006

Why Liz chose Atenas

In 2006 we were looking for a special property as a second home in Costa Rica.

Pica Flora, the name of our small community outside of the town of Atenas was conceived as a Bali style home design. Bali has a similar climate to Atenas. The property is based on a mountain ridge with several 100 year old trees with breath taking views. We have spent 10 years customizing the house with unique furniture, art work and landscaping.

What makes this villa unique

In 2015 we built a a third bedroom on top of a deck that overhangs the ridge mountain. This was to enhance the spectacular view we already had. The new bedroom has an indoor/outdoor shower which we know your going to love. The deck also has a pergola for dinning with a BBQ near by.

Exceptional

My family had the good fortune to stay here for two weeks, and it was also the site of our daughter's wedding! The pergola overlooking the valley & mountains was the perfect place to exchange vows! It quickly felt like home. The community alone was very welcoming. I don't have enough words to describe how beautiful the property is with lush gardens, rolling rain clouds and Toucan's in the driveway. The way the indoor and outdoors merged couldn't be better. The property manager, Leticia, was great. We called her for one minor item and she promptly arranged for someone to fix it quickly. We can't wait until we have the opportunity to visit again, it was a wonderful two weeks.

Our second visits - and we LOVE it still!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second visit to the Picaflora villa and it was everything remembered and more. The newly added casita that cantilevers over the verdant valley below is stunning and just makes this unique villa even more special, with a fabulous open-air outdoor shower, large bathroom, and completely private balcony for sitting. The house is well maintained by a gregarious staff and managed by Leticia, who goes out of her way to make things easy and welcoming. We had Heidi, the housekeeper, cook a meal for us and it was not only delicious but there was so much food, we had leftovers for the next day. We drank in the fresh air, the sweet sounds of the birds, and the incredibly lush and abundant gardens for a full two weeks and loved every minute of it. The villa is well equipped with everything you need to enjoy yourself. The gourmet kitchen is easy to navigate and well stocked with flatware and an assortment of dinnerware on which to serve a nice meal. The house is villa sits atop a ridge that allows for terrific mountain breezes to pass through and keep the temperature throughout the villa and grounds perfect. The Balinese architecture and unique design that the owners created while planning and building the house makes this a gem that stands out from the many places we’ve stayed in our world travels. The villa, the valley, the town of Atenas just beckons us back for relaxation and communing with the lush flora and fauna of the Central Valley. The farmer’s market is not to be missed and we even discovered some new restaurants on this trip.

A beautiful gated compound on a mountain ridge with fantastic views, breezes and privacy

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Bali House. Modeled on traditional Indonesian architecture with tall, airy ceilings; this is a large main building "great room" with modern kitchen and expansive dining/family area for relaxing and socializing; and three separate private bedroom/bath bungalows attached to the main house with covered walkways and patios; anchored by the pool in the middle courtyard. Exceptionally clean and well maintained. Pleasant breezes sweep up the canyons...perfect for relaxing and sleeping. A wonderful, restful spot to relax all day long.....or to return to after day tripping to the beaches, parks, high mountains, waterfalls, volcanoes. This is a gated community and the Bali House property also has its own separate electric security gate...we felt very secure. Bali house is served by an exceptionally friendly and responsive team available by phone to plan regional cuisine home cooked meals if you want them, or for any questions about the area or the property. We had a great time.

Paradise

  • 5 of 5

A five week stay in paradise just wasn't enough. This is such a beautiful location and a beautiful home. The weather in Atenas is as perfect as they claim. It was the best place for touring and day trips in the Central Valley and beyond. Leticia is there to answer all questions and assist in any way she can. She is delightful! I'm looking forward to a return visit.

This is truly a gorgeous mountain retreat!

  • 5 of 5

Where do I begin??? This was the easiest rental process from beginning to end. Liz Duffy is a wonderful home owner and her property manager Leticia is incredible. We were made to feel like royalty! This home is even better than the pictures.

Atenas is far from the touristy areas, perfect for those with a sense of adventure and fearless driving on very windy roads.

Sitting on the veranda is like a magical enchanting ever changing gorgeous setting. The multitude of birds, bird songs and cows roaming the hillside was such a treat. The home is perfect with three gorgeous bedrooms. The new master bedroom is lovely, like a tree house with an outdoor shower. The great room was perfect for evening cooking, eating vegetables, fruit and the best beef and chicken we've ever had, bought a local markets. We planned on eating as much fish as we could, but the meat was incredible. Don't be afraid of purchasing the freshest chicken and meat you will ever eat! "Downtown" Atenas is clean and has all the provisions that you need.

The pool is chilly, but once you get in, you quickly adapt. The home comes with a gardener named Elias who appears periodically to clean the pool. Susana is a wonderful physical therapist/masseuse. She is $29/hour and gives one the best massages I have ever had in my life. Leticia can set you up with her. Heidi is the housekeeper at the home and can also cook for you for $20/hour, she also provides cleaning services for $10/hour. Heidi is a lovely individual eager to speak English, she is currently studying English.

Everyone in this small community is devoted to clean healthy living. You will be inspired by the many bikers, walkers and runners. It makes you want to be a better person. All the "ticos" (the locals) are very patient, sweet and elegant.

Walking around Villa Pica Flora was so much fun. Such a pretty community.

This home is very special, the owners kind, Leticia is a gem. We are hoping to return again by the end of the year. Costa Rica is Pura Vida!

We were lucky to have a visiting local dog who adopted us during our stay. We named him "Sparky" and almost started the process to adopt him and take him home. However, one of the gardeners in Villa Pica Flora told us that this sweet Jack Russell adopts all of the renters and goes from house to house.

We drove a lot, Atenas is at least 30 minutes to 1.5 hours from zip lining, the beach and coffee tours.

Don't pass this home up if you are looking to unwind and relax!

Honeymoon in Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent the first week of our honeymoon in this beautiful property. We had a wonderful experience from the get-go. We made a wrong turn leaving the airport and got stuck it atrocious traffic, which caused us to be over an hour late meeting Leticia. She was at our meeting point with a smile on her face and warm greetings. I cannot properly describe the breathtaking views that this location offered as we drove through the gates. We knew that we had made the right decision at that point. Being rainy season, we had the pleasure of some beautiful storms passing through. I love to cook, but the store left me less than inspired, so we opted for dining out most meals, which I am not sad about at all! Atenas has some really wonderful restaurants and weren't disappointed with any of the restaurants we ate at. During our stay, we drove down to Jaco Beach for a day (about 45 minutes) and had an overnight stay in Paquera. Outside of that, we spent most of our time lounging about reading, watching movies, or enjoying the soothing sounds of the thunderstorms. So many more great things I could say about this property, but to avoid rambling, I will close with a huge thank you to Liz and Judd for opening their home to us. We look forward to returning soon!

Best Regards,

Tyler and Joshua Alessi
