What to do !:): Our bilingual property manager can help you plan all kinds of day trips and overnights if you wish to explore as much of this beautiful country as possible. Costa Rica has so much to offer, from trips to nearby cloud forests, checking out its many volcanoes - active or not, hiking breathtaking waterfalls, exploring many of its dense jungles, taking a catamaran to a private island, or even do a little of it's famous deep sea fishing. The wild life will astound you. There are many adrenaline charged activities like white water rafting, zip lines ATV riding, or jet skiing in the open ocean for those who relax by supercharging. For those who wish to relax a little more gently, take a canopy walk, go birding, check out the beautiful wild orchids and bromeliads everywhere, shop in farmer's markets, listen to huge flocks of parrots gather in the town square at dusk, visit a local coffee farm and roasting plant, or get a massage by the pool - happily, we've got that covered too! Or just stay at the villa and disconnect from the fast pace world and rediscover the wonders that the natural world has to offer.

About Liz

Liz and judd are freelance creatives (food stylist and photographer) based out of the New York area who work for food magazines, cookbooks and advertising clients. We built our home on this spot in Atenas because of the glorious views, the wonderful climate, and convenience to the small non touristy town feel that we enjoy. We are well located near, but also far enough from, major roadways and the airport so traveling to spots throughout the country is relatively easy. We have put our heart and soul in making this house our own style and we hope and think you will love it too.

Liz purchased this villa in 2006

Why Liz chose Alajuela Province

In 2006 we were looking for a special property as a second home in Costa Rica.

Picaflora, the name of our small community just outside of the town of Atenas was conceived as a Bali style home design partly for the beautiful architecture and also due to Bali's similar climate to Atenas. The property is set on a mountain ridge with several 100 year old trees and breath taking views. We have spent 10 years customizing the house with unique furniture, art work and landscaping.

What makes this villa unique

In 2015 we built a a third bedroom on top of a deck that overhangs the ridge mountain with its own private balcony looking out at the spectacular view we love so much. The new bedroom has a private indoor/outdoor shower that enables you to watch toucans and other birds in the trees outside. There is a covered pergola for dining with a BBQ on the deck for outdoor dining under the stars.

Spectacular

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Liz & Judd's mountain house for 3 nights, which of course was not long enough.

The house manager Leticia, met us in Atena & guided us to the house. She was so thorough & patient showing us the house.

The house is nicer than the pictures you see online. Everywhere you look, you will find beautiful details. The owners put a lot of effort into their dream home & it shows. I hope that others can see this & respect the work that went into this property.

It is so peaceful, relaxing & beautiful, that you never want to leave. There are so many birds around the property, you can sit for hours watching birds!

We have never seen a kitchen so well stocked. Again it was another reminder that the owners thought of everything.

Although it was hard to leave the house for the day, we went to the Poas Volcano, Catarata del Toro & took the coffee tour (El Toledo). All great things to see & do. The El Toledo tour is extremely informative & we considered it "a must".

As far as food, we we tried La Trilla (Peruvian Cheviche is a must) & we had the best pizza ever at La Finca.

Our stay at the house was amazing but short. The house is spectacular! We can't wait to return for a longer stay!

Paradise Found

  • 5 of 5

We had the pleasure of staying here for one week. Atenas is beautifully located in mountainous terrain. the home itself is very inviting...comfy and cozy. one gets the feeling that this is a loved home and not just a rental property. it is well equipped and you will not lack for much in the way of kitchen necessities. I would say it is more for either couples, younger children 👶𭠼􎿻 with family or older/younger adults and family. teens would likely find it too serene. the lack of a television was refreshing🙂򠡂ut of course wifi is readily available for those who want to use phones, tablets and iPads. We played games and went for walks beside our chosen excursions(Sarchi,,Dokka,Poas and Arenal) ?cabs are readily available and there is a wonderful restaurant nearby(La TROCHA). Leiticia, the property manager, is pleasant and of great help for any of your needs or questions and will meet you in town to take you to the house. we hope to return someday to Atenas.

Fantastic!

  • 5 of 5

Gorgeous property. We stayed here with some of our family and it worked perfectly for our needs. The layout and peaceful landscaping were great for relaxing, the kitchen was well equipped ( loved the commercial blender for making smoothies), pool was refreshing, loved the feel of outdoor living with the wall panels rolled open. Convenient to Atenas , yet far enough away for privacy and quietness. Leticia was super friendly and attentive to our requests. I highly recommend this property for a relaxing stay!

A very relaxing 10 days. January 7-17, 2017

  • 4 of 5

Liz and Judd's home in Pica Flora was exactly as shown in pictures and as described. The town of Atenas was only a 10 min drive away. There were 2 grocery stores that seemed to have everything. We went to a few of the local restaurants that were suggested by Leticia (the manager of the property) and had delicious meals. The kitchen is fully equipped for cooking at the house, complete with a gas grill. The weather was perfect. Low 80's during the day and low 60's at night (great for sleeping). The wildlife in the early morning hours did make early risers out of us, however!

Amazing place to stay in Costa Rica!

  • 5 of 5

Celebrated my 40th birthday here and couldn't have been more pleased with the home. My group consisted of 6, (3 couples) and we each had our own private rooms. The room my wife and I stayed in, had an outdoor shower, which was awesome. While taking a shower, I had a Toucan bird fly right by me. The home was clean and well taken care of and the landscaping was gorgeous. Leticia was our contact and she did a great job of meeting us in town and guiding us to the home. She was always quick to respond to any of our questions (email) and filled us in on some of the local spots. We planned massages with Susana, which were terrific. We also planned a dinner with Heidi, who cooked us an authentic Costa Rican meal. It was amazing and I highly recommend her. Heidi is also the house keeper and she is a wonderful person. Even with the language barrier, she is still very easy to communicate with and her children, who help her with cooking and cleaning are the most well behaved kids I've ever seen. Overall, I highly recommend this home as a place to stay in Costa Rica. It is secluded and feels very comfortable. I only wish I could have stayed longer. My number one suggestion for a trip to Costa Rica, is make sure you have a good GPS, because the roads are poorly marked and it is very easy to get lost. We used a our cell phones, but found the signal wasn't always good, and we got off track a few times. The people of Costa Rica were very welcoming and I hope to visit again someday. Finally, Liz, the home owner was easy to communicate with and made booking the place a breeze. Pura Vida!

more beautiful than the photos

  • 5 of 5

This house is beautiful in the photos and it is even more beautiful in person. We just stayed here a few days instead of doing a day trip because the pool and scenery were unbeatable. It truly is outdoor living with all the amenities at its best. The property is gorgeous and in a perfect location for seeing Costa Rica in day trips. Atenas is a fun town with a great grocery store and very friendly locals.
