For those who wish to relax a little more gently, take a canopy walk, go birding, check out the beautiful wild orchids and bromeliads everywhere, shop in farmer's markets, listen to huge flocks of parrots gather in the town square at dusk, visit a local coffee farm and roasting plant, or get a massage by the pool - happily, we've got that covered too! Or just stay at the villa and disconnect from the fast pace world and rediscover the wonders that the natural world has to offer.

About Liz

Liz Duffy is a freelance food stylist based in New York City. Judd Pilossof is a freelance food photographer also in New York. We work for food magazines, cookbooks and advertising clients. We have 2 daughters and come to Costa Rica as often as possible. We built our home in Atenas because of the unique views, climate and wonderful small town (non touristy) feel that we enjoy. We have put our heart and soul in making this house our own style and we think you will love it too.

Liz purchased this villa in 2006

Why Liz chose Alajuela Province

In 2006 we were looking for a special property as a second home in Costa Rica.

Pica Flora, the name of our small community outside of the town of Atenas was conceived as a Bali style home design. Bali has a similar climate to Atenas. The property is based on a mountain ridge with several 100 year old trees with breath taking views. We have spent 10 years customizing the house with unique furniture, art work and landscaping.

What makes this villa unique

In 2015 we built a a third bedroom on top of a deck that overhangs the ridge mountain. This was to enhance the spectacular view we already had. The new bedroom has an indoor/outdoor shower which we know your going to love. The deck also has a pergola for dinning with a BBQ near by.

Liz and Judd's home in Pica Flora was exactly as shown in pictures and as described. The town of Atenas was only a 10 min drive away. There were 2 grocery stores that seemed to have everything. We went to a few of the local restaurants that were suggested by Leticia (the manager of the property) and had delicious meals. The kitchen is fully equipped for cooking at the house, complete with a gas grill. The weather was perfect. Low 80's during the day and low 60's at night (great for sleeping). The wildlife in the early morning hours did make early risers out of us, however!

Amazing place to stay in Costa Rica!

  • 5 of 5

Celebrated my 40th birthday here and couldn't have been more pleased with the home. My group consisted of 6, (3 couples) and we each had our own private rooms. The room my wife and I stayed in, had an outdoor shower, which was awesome. While taking a shower, I had a Toucan bird fly right by me. The home was clean and well taken care of and the landscaping was gorgeous. Leticia was our contact and she did a great job of meeting us in town and guiding us to the home. She was always quick to respond to any of our questions (email) and filled us in on some of the local spots. We planned massages with Susana, which were terrific. We also planned a dinner with Heidi, who cooked us an authentic Costa Rican meal. It was amazing and I highly recommend her. Heidi is also the house keeper and she is a wonderful person. Even with the language barrier, she is still very easy to communicate with and her children, who help her with cooking and cleaning are the most well behaved kids I've ever seen. Overall, I highly recommend this home as a place to stay in Costa Rica. It is secluded and feels very comfortable. I only wish I could have stayed longer. My number one suggestion for a trip to Costa Rica, is make sure you have a good GPS, because the roads are poorly marked and it is very easy to get lost. We used a our cell phones, but found the signal wasn't always good, and we got off track a few times. The people of Costa Rica were very welcoming and I hope to visit again someday. Finally, Liz, the home owner was easy to communicate with and made booking the place a breeze. Pura Vida!

more beautiful than the photos

This house is beautiful in the photos and it is even more beautiful in person. We just stayed here a few days instead of doing a day trip because the pool and scenery were unbeatable. It truly is outdoor living with all the amenities at its best. The property is gorgeous and in a perfect location for seeing Costa Rica in day trips. Atenas is a fun town with a great grocery store and very friendly locals.

Absolutely Amazing

This house is spectacular!

The place is huge. It's perched on a mountain ridge with beautiful views of a lush jungle valley and the gorgeous opposing ridge rising across the green expanse. There is so much natural beauty all around the house and on the property itself. There's a stunning variety of trees, flowers, fruit trees, vines, cacti and other plants that make you feel like you really are in the middle of some jungle garden, but with all the creature comforts of a resort.

The main house is open and spacious with vaulted ceilings and a high-end kitchen. We loved opening the sliding doors on 3 sides of the space, and just filling it with mountain breezes throughout. The three bedrooms are all stand alone structures allowing for a lot of privacy. We stayed in the newly built room with an awesome outdoor shower and private balcony. There's nothing like showering outside on the side of a beautiful mountaintop with birds chirping and the sun shining! Our friends stayed in the master bedroom that was all the way on the other side of the pool.

There are also so many great spots to sit outside on the property! Between the multiple hammocks, lounge chairs, reading nooks and multiple dining tables - all in various spots in the garden - we barely had time to relax in them all!

We took a couple of day trips in the area and an overnight trip to Arenal volcano. We had planned to do more exploring of CR, but honestly, once we got to the house, my husband and I just wanted to stay there all day!

The weather was perfect - even in the rainy season it was sunny most of the time and the rain we did get was beautiful anyway and not at all too cold. Even when it was raining in the town sometimes the house wouldn't get the rain because of the altitude of the ridge, and you could just watch the rain clouds move through the valley and away from the house.

We got to see some great wildlife close up from the property as well. We saw toucans as well as other beautiful birds, iguanas and even a gang of monkeys swinging in the trees!

Leticia was super helpful and friendly and went out of her way to help us with arranging details of our transport and giving advice.

I have already been telling my friends about this place and plan to return again soon.

The most beautiful place I have ever stayed

This place is truly a piece of paradise. Although it is not close to a whole lot of touristy sites, if you are looking for a retreat with insanely good weather, this is ideal. The house has three separate bedrooms with Queen / King beds in them. Because of the separation of the rooms which need to be locked separately at night, this might not be a good property for families with small children. However, we have big kids and the house was amazing. Thank you Leticia for your warmth and graciousness when we got completely lost and we're running late to meet you. I would go back in a heartbeat.

Absolutely perfect!

We can not believe how lucky we were to find this beautiful house! It looks exactly as pictured and had so much wonderful space for our family of four. We rented this house for 7 days and used it as our base to visit many wonderful places. It is in a great location and we enjoyed shopping for groceries in Atenas and enjoyed all of the wonderful fruit stands nearby.

From start to finish, working with Liz and Judd couldn't have been easier. They answered all of our questions promptly. Leticia was so kind and helpful and always a phone call away.

We had so many wonderful adventures but our 2 favorite were zip lining in Arenal and whitewater rafting down the Pacuare river. Absolutely beautiful scenery and just enough challenging rapids. Thanks Judd for the suggestion.

We were all sad when we had to leave but we all agreed that our goal is to make it back to Costa Rica someday and hopefully get to stay in this house again.

Thank You Liz and Judd !

Owner's Response: Debbie, We are so happy you enjoyed your stay with us. Great to hear you went on the white water trip, it's one of our favorite things to do. Liz and I are at the house this week and we're amazed at how much our garden has grown since our last visit. Hope you come back soon. Best Judd and Liz
