Our Jewel by the Sea - Mika Lani is an exceptional vacation home, located on a beautiful protected snorkel bay containing colorful tropical fish and coral, with the ocean reef just beyond. You will be immersed in this aquatic wonderland just a few steps away from this private oceanfront retreat. Every room has a view of the ocean. This is a romantic, enchanting get-away for two.
There are many windows allowing for breathtaking views. Every amenity inside is luxurious, from the silk-like linens to the granite gourmet kitchen, from the dinnerware to the decorator touches in the furnishings. It includes high speed Internet and WiFi, SMART flat screen TV, well-stocked kitchen (just bring your fresh foods), snorkels, fins, beach reef shoes, beach towels, 2 kayaks, other aquatic amenities, guide books and insider information to make your Big Island Hawaiian vacation special and memorable. Sip your favorite beverage while relaxing in the oceanfront jacuzzi. Total serenity is yours. Just pack your swim suit and come on over.
Mika Lani is designed for two people only. It could be your honeymoon, a romantic get away, or any special occasion. Upgrades abound so that you have the comforts and amenities of home, yet far far from home. The home is small, yet roomy – just one bedroom with 2 upscale bathrooms. The surrounding lanai (deck) is huge with three sides facing the ocean. You will delight in the jacuzzi that sits right out on the oceanfront lanai. We have created a mini private oasis for you. The house is maintained to 5-Star standards. The décor is modern, serene, Zen-like, with Hawaiian touches scattered throughout – from the orchid sink to the wave-like tile, from abundant Hawaiian flowers to sea-foam glass highlights in many of the decorator touches.
The surrounding nature and the natural beauty of the area are astounding. Snorkeling is right outside your doorstep. The snorkel ponds are protected by a coral reef so they are calm, yet the crashing ocean waves are just beyond. We are located within a Marine Life Conservation district. One mile away, you can soak in the volcanically heated warm ponds of Ahalanui. A little farther down the road, you can surf or boogey board with the locals at Isaac Hale Beach, also known as Pohoiki. Volcano National Park is approximately one hour away. Black sand beaches, waterfalls, nature hikes, steam vent caves, botanical gardens and scenic drives through rain forests are all nearby. Hilo, the second largest city in the Hawaiian Islands, lies just 40 minutes away. This is old Hawaii at its natural best.

We fell in love in Hawaii and with Hawaii, and decided it had to be an intrinsic part of our lives. During the past 12 years, we have opened our vacation homes on the Hilo side of the Big Island for guests to share in our dream of Paradise. Our passion is providing you with lifetime memories of your very special trip to Hawaii.
This unique property is located just steps from the water. It is one of only 8 houses on the State Marine Preserve. The Hilo side of the Big Island is lush and green and has many exotic fruits and flowers. It is also old Hawaii at its best. It takes you off the tourist track, while you still vacation in luxury.
Our guest comments say it all. Many guests return year after year to relax and rejuvenate. Staying at Mika Lani is a gift to yourself.
We anticipated that Mika Lani would be a wonderful home since we previously stayed in a home on the beach in LA owned by the same person. We wanted a quiet retreat on the ocean away from the usual tourist areas like Kailua, and hoped for a place we could snorkel without a long drive. Mika Lani was perfect!
The directions and arrival instructions were clear and complete. We were welcomed by a lovely gift basket, fresh flowers and a bottle of champagne in the refrigerator. The "Aloha" book was wonderfully complete with detailed information about the area, markets, sights, and a tide table.
From the living room and the lanai, you can see and hear the surf about 200 yards away, but you are perhaps only 20 feet from the Kapoho Tidepools, a premier snorkeling location. The lanai wraps around the entire home so you can always find a comfortable, breezy, shaded spot to read. The lanai has 2 hammocks, a table and chairs for dining, comfortable chairs, and other seating so you are comfortable.
It is open, airy, with comfortable furniture, beds , appliances, dishes, big screen TV, WiFi and internet. Attention to high quality and detail is evident everywhere in contrast to the Ikea furnishings of many VRBOs. There are ceiling fans in all the rooms and lots of screened windows and big sliding doors which let the breeze in.
The “snorkel shed” off the lanai contains fins, masks and reef socks and a tub for rinsing the equipment, plus 2 bikes useful for peddling on the quiet streets and roads nearby along with an outdoor shower. Also on the lanai are a washer and dryer and a hot tub. You will also find two kayaks which we may use on our next trip. Everything you might want or need is there.
If you prefer to tour, Hilo is only 40 minutes away, and if you want to see the volcano it is an easy drive. The Hilo airport helicopter allowed us to see and smell the lava flows.
Mika Lani gave us a wonderful 11 days of quiet, sun and snorkeling, exactly what we were hoping for and exceeding our expectations. Seldom, perhaps never, have I stayed in a place that was so comfortable and inviting. We simply wanted to stay there and not drive anywhere. We have already reserved it for a return trip. Need I say more?
My husband and I were looking for a property that was close to both the Hilo area and the volcanoes so this seemed in the middle of both. I liked the fact that it wasn't commercial with lots of people and seemed private.
What a beautiful property and the owners were very nice to deal with in setting up the reservation. They sent plenty of information that we needed in advance of our arrival.
Once we got to the island and located Mika Lani (excellent directions, by the way !!!) , we were amazed to find a wonderful home full of amenities and right on the water. No loud surf, but just the gentle tidal pools that were loaded with fish. Snorkeling was AMAZING and my husband used 3 rolls of films shooting the coral and fish in his underwater camera.
We had breakfast on the front lanai every morning to the amazing views and the birds chirping and fish jumping. What a relaxing place. You will love the serenity here.
The facility is REALLY clean, down to the BBQ Grill, hottub, and washer and dryer. There is nothing that you will need that this home doesn't supply. There are snorkel masks, fins, kayaks, towels, a nice welcoming basket of goodies and even champagne. The kitchen is VERY well equipped! Everything was thought of by the gracious hosts.
We will come back to the islands at some point and we will stay at Mika Lani again. We highly recommend this vacation rental!
Don't hesitate to rent this spot. For the price, you'll have a wonderful spot that would be hard to beat.
We highly recommend Mika Lani!
Me and my Husband decided that for our Honeymoon we would stay at the Mika Lani, and boy are we sure glad we did! The house was very clean, MORE than full of supplies and absolutely gorgeous! Sara & Jamie made the house feel welcoming with little details like snacks, cotton robes and even a guide to the area. The tide pools of course were amazing, me and my fiance felt we were watching the worlds natural aquarium! We snorkeled and kayaked around the bay only to return to a relaxing hideaway. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND staying here at the Mika Lani. My only complaint (if it is considered) was that the neighbors that were staying at a rental next door were a bit loud. The house itself, tide pools and property was unbelievable. We would love to return someday! Thanks Sara & Jamie for the amazing stay!
Both myself and my wife were completely overwhelmed by the property- and we arrived late at night.. the views, the abundance of fish to snorkel with..and the views, the views, the views!!!
Being from a large city we sat outside every night to stare at the abundance of stars in the sky as well as the glow to the right of the property from the volcano. Soon after the moon would slowly makes it way around and shine on the water for endless pictures...All while you could hear and see- fish jumping out the water to catch a late night snack..
As the mornings rolled around there was always a large school of smaller fish (around 60+) that would jump in the air and put on a display of acrobatics between 7-7:45 am EVERY morning..Just breath taking...
The hardest part of being at the property was leaving to go explore the island- but we found a wealth of information logged for us at the house which allowed us to experience the culture and flavor of Big Island without wasting any time. The volcano is close by, black sand beaches, downtown Hilo, the best fish and chips you will find in the 50 states, and many other great sites to explore.
We were at the property for 6 days and still ran out of time to see more. Just a wonderful, well designed property that included all the amenities to stay at home and eat 3 meals, as well stay entertained for weeks!
Do yourself a favor and stay here!!! We have traveled all over the world and stayed in remote and less secluded resorts and we have yet to find anything that compare the overwhelming abundance of AW factor we had from this stay in vacation-land!! You'll find yourself talking with your spouse "that we could do this everyday" and "leave the mainland for tranquility and beauty that only the BI can offer"
We will most definitely be returning (even with a 14+ flight)
Sara and Jamie have everything covered- all you need is a flight!!!!
Thanks you Sara and Jamie- your home has left memories that will never be forgotten!

The property and setting is every bit as good as all the reviews suggest. The owners have thought of everything to make the stay perfect, and the location has so much to offer. I only wish the property was large enough to return with our full family.
Mika Lani is truly a beautiful gem of a getaway! The home is spotless, with much attention to detail inside and out. We appreciate the efforts the owners put in to embodying the true spirit of ALOHA. The setting is spectacular and your senses are overwhelmed every moment of your stay! From the jumping fish, to the morning and evening rainbows, to the crashing waves and the lush greenery against the black lava, Mika Lani is hard to beat. We highly recommend this home if you need to unplug and relax in a beautiful oasis teeming with life and beauty. Pictures cannot capture the essence of the property but the name does accurately describe this exquisite place. We will definitely visit again!
This was our third stay at Mika Lani. All the positives posted by others are spot on, so I won't restate them here. The owners and their man, Adan, really keep this an extraordinary experience. After here, we went to Maui. We were wishing we had just stayed at "our" Mika Lani instead.
Things you must do 1) go to the Maku u farmers market on Sunday. Have the world famous Green Papaya salad. (Medium is pretty spicy). Try some other foods you will not find at home e.g...Breadfruit simmered in coconut etc... Visit with your neighbors in the common eating area, always fun. Get fresh fruit and stuff to cook tonight. 2) Go to Alahanui Park and swim in the salt pool warmed by thermal springs and mixed with incoming tide. 3) Take a LONG stroll through Lava Trees Park. Much to see if you take time to look, wild orchids, colorful mushrooms, constantly changing light. Great for the photographer in you. If your outta here in 10 minutes, you missed the point. 4) sit on Lanai for hours and ponder, where is there another place like this?
I could go on, but I must go check my calendar..........
Cozy, sunny home directly on the beautiful snorkel tide pools. Colorful coral and fish just steps to the water. Merrie Monarch Hula Festival in Hilo is held each year during the week following Easter.
