Our Jewel by the Sea - Mika Lani is an exceptional vacation home, located on a beautiful protected snorkel bay containing colorful tropical fish and coral, with the ocean reef just beyond. You will be immersed in this aquatic wonderland just a few steps away from this private oceanfront retreat. Every room has a view of the ocean. This is a romantic, enchanting get-away for two.
There are many windows allowing for breathtaking views. Every amenity inside is luxurious, from the silk-like linens to the granite gourmet kitchen, from the dinnerware to the decorator touches in the furnishings. It includes high speed Internet and WiFi, SMART flat screen TV, well-stocked kitchen (just bring your fresh foods), snorkels, fins, beach reef shoes, beach towels, 2 kayaks, other aquatic amenities, guide books and insider information to make your Big Island Hawaiian vacation special and memorable. Sip your favorite beverage while relaxing in the oceanfront jacuzzi. Total serenity is yours. Just pack your swim suit and come on over.
Mika Lani is designed for two people only. It could be your honeymoon, a romantic get away, or any special occasion. Upgrades abound so that you have the comforts and amenities of home, yet far far from home. The home is small, yet roomy – just one bedroom with 2 upscale bathrooms. The surrounding lanai (deck) is huge with three sides facing the ocean. You will delight in the jacuzzi that sits right out on the oceanfront lanai. We have created a mini private oasis for you. The house is maintained to 5-Star standards. The décor is modern, serene, Zen-like, with Hawaiian touches scattered throughout – from the orchid sink to the wave-like tile, from abundant Hawaiian flowers to sea-foam glass highlights in many of the decorator touches.
The surrounding nature and the natural beauty of the area are astounding. Snorkeling is right outside your doorstep. The snorkel ponds are protected by a coral reef so they are calm, yet the crashing ocean waves are just beyond. We are located within a Marine Life Conservation district. One mile away, you can soak in the volcanically heated warm ponds of Ahalanui. A little farther down the road, you can surf or boogey board with the locals at Isaac Hale Beach, also known as Pohoiki. Volcano National Park is approximately one hour away. Black sand beaches, waterfalls, nature hikes, steam vent caves, botanical gardens and scenic drives through rain forests are all nearby. Hilo, the second largest city in the Hawaiian Islands, lies just 40 minutes away. This is old Hawaii at its natural best.

We fell in love in Hawaii and with Hawaii, and decided it had to be an intrinsic part of our lives. During the past 12 years, we have opened our vacation homes on the Hilo side of the Big Island for guests to share in our dream of Paradise. Our passion is providing you with lifetime memories of your very special trip to Hawaii.
This unique property is located just steps from the water. It is one of only 8 houses on the State Marine Preserve. The Hilo side of the Big Island is lush and green and has many exotic fruits and flowers. It is also old Hawaii at its best. It takes you off the tourist track, while you still vacation in luxury.
Our guest comments say it all. Many guests return year after year to relax and rejuvenate. Staying at Mika Lani is a gift to yourself.
We anticipated that Mika Lani would be a wonderful home since we previously stayed in a home on the beach in LA owned by the same person. We wanted a quiet retreat on the ocean away from the usual tourist areas like Kailua, and hoped for a place we could snorkel without a long drive. Mika Lani was perfect!
The directions and arrival instructions were clear and complete. We were welcomed by a lovely gift basket, fresh flowers and a bottle of champagne in the refrigerator. The "Aloha" book was wonderfully complete with detailed information about the area, markets, sights, and a tide table.
From the living room and the lanai, you can see and hear the surf about 200 yards away, but you are perhaps only 20 feet from the Kapoho Tidepools, a premier snorkeling location. The lanai wraps around the entire home so you can always find a comfortable, breezy, shaded spot to read. The lanai has 2 hammocks, a table and chairs for dining, comfortable chairs, and other seating so you are comfortable.
It is open, airy, with comfortable furniture, beds , appliances, dishes, big screen TV, WiFi and internet. Attention to high quality and detail is evident everywhere in contrast to the Ikea furnishings of many VRBOs. There are ceiling fans in all the rooms and lots of screened windows and big sliding doors which let the breeze in.
The “snorkel shed” off the lanai contains fins, masks and reef socks and a tub for rinsing the equipment, plus 2 bikes useful for peddling on the quiet streets and roads nearby along with an outdoor shower. Also on the lanai are a washer and dryer and a hot tub. You will also find two kayaks which we may use on our next trip. Everything you might want or need is there.
If you prefer to tour, Hilo is only 40 minutes away, and if you want to see the volcano it is an easy drive. The Hilo airport helicopter allowed us to see and smell the lava flows.
Mika Lani gave us a wonderful 11 days of quiet, sun and snorkeling, exactly what we were hoping for and exceeding our expectations. Seldom, perhaps never, have I stayed in a place that was so comfortable and inviting. We simply wanted to stay there and not drive anywhere. We have already reserved it for a return trip. Need I say more?
My husband and I were looking for a property that was close to both the Hilo area and the volcanoes so this seemed in the middle of both. I liked the fact that it wasn't commercial with lots of people and seemed private.
What a beautiful property and the owners were very nice to deal with in setting up the reservation. They sent plenty of information that we needed in advance of our arrival.
Once we got to the island and located Mika Lani (excellent directions, by the way !!!) , we were amazed to find a wonderful home full of amenities and right on the water. No loud surf, but just the gentle tidal pools that were loaded with fish. Snorkeling was AMAZING and my husband used 3 rolls of films shooting the coral and fish in his underwater camera.
We had breakfast on the front lanai every morning to the amazing views and the birds chirping and fish jumping. What a relaxing place. You will love the serenity here.
The facility is REALLY clean, down to the BBQ Grill, hottub, and washer and dryer. There is nothing that you will need that this home doesn't supply. There are snorkel masks, fins, kayaks, towels, a nice welcoming basket of goodies and even champagne. The kitchen is VERY well equipped! Everything was thought of by the gracious hosts.
We will come back to the islands at some point and we will stay at Mika Lani again. We highly recommend this vacation rental!
Don't hesitate to rent this spot. For the price, you'll have a wonderful spot that would be hard to beat.
We highly recommend Mika Lani!
We had a great time snorkeling in the Tide Pools. It was so very convenient to get into the water from the house. The water is crystal clear and you can see fish without even getting into the water. The house is beautiful inside and out. Every convenience one could want. Clothesline was super and we used it daily. Only had to use washing machine and dryer once in our 5 day stay and it was great to have both. Actually not far from Pahoe at all and we found plenty of places to eat - Fresh Fish is super, not to be missed. We also managed to take a trip up to Volcanoes National Park and hike the Kilauea Iki Trail and the Pu'u Loa Petroglyph Trail. Wonderful vacation! Hope to return.
This was our third visit to Mika Lani. It was our fourth trip to the big island in the last six years, and Mika Lani is our favorite place, hands down. You may not like it if you want the Kona night life or resort scene, but as far as a tropical getaway, it's hard to beat. We left a favorable review after our stay in 2015 (titled Paradise Indeed), and things haven't changed. The one thing we had an opportunity to do this time was to tour a couple of other vacation rentals in the neighborhood, and they were more like typical houses (like the one we live in) with formica countertops and standard middle class finishes. Mika Lani, besides being in the ideal tropical paradise setting on the tide pools, is nicely appointed with higher-end finishes (lots of stone and tile and glass) that make you feel special, even if you live in a higher-end house. It has also been well-maintained, and has been virtually the same since our first visit 5 years ago (we have been to other rentals that seem to go downhill as the years go by). It's obvious that Jamie and Noi have invested a lot of their time and re-invest in their properties to keep them nice and up to date (with the exception of the goofy dishwasher built into the kitchen sink that either needs to be fixed or replaced - btw; that is the only complaint I can think of and it's pretty minor). I think they'll take care of that too, though. It's great having all the amenities like a completely equipped kitchen, kayaks, snorkel gear, and bikes. We also stayed at Mika Mizu in Hilo, another of Jamie and Noi's properties, and it was similar in terms of the higher-end finishes and being nicely appointed and well-maintained. I get the impression all of their properties are like that. One other thing about the Kapoho area is that, based on three times we have been there, it is in a drier and sunnier micro-climate than Hilo and Pahoa. Although we got a little rain several times, there were many days when the weather app on my phone showed heavy rain in Hilo while we were snorkeling in the sunshine at Mika Lani. Maybe not quite as much sun as Kona, but not so hot and beautiful and tropical none-the-less.
We have stayed here three times, November, and March. Peaceful place where one can hear birds, frogs, turtles, flopping fish, and waves. Love it here. Ride a bike, snorkel in the ponds, or sit on the lanai and sip coffee while you read a book.
The Mikalani is everything and more you would want. Perfect for the two of us. Can't ask for a better location to snorkel, swim and kayak. It is all right out your back door. The house was fully stocked and very clean. The hot tub was nice but a little too hot for me but my wife liked it. Just can't say enough about Sara and Jamie. Easy to reach if you have a question Adan their go to guy is also easy to reach and responds quickly to the house. The only downside is that Verizon does not have phone service but you can text. Sara warns you in advance that Verizion doesn't work there. Lesson learned. They do have WiFi and it is very strong.
Loved the location Kapoho and Pahoa are great local areas.
Will come back again. Wish there was another bedroom to bring family so I guess they will have to see pictures instead.
When visiting the islands of Hawaii we love to go snorkeling but always find the logistics intimidating - packing all the gear, choosing a location close to good beaches, arriving before the crowds, gambling on the weather. Mika Lani is the perfect solution to all that. After arrival, the only remaining question is how many times you wish to snorkel each day. (Hint: Bring more than one swimming suit.)
Other reviewers have correctly described how well-equipped, convenient, and clean this property is. The owners obviously take pride in maintaining and upgrading everything - from the new washer/dryer to the new kayaks. The kitchen has everything you need.
But for us it was really all about the fish. In varying weather conditions, tide levels, and degrees of sunlight, we saw dozens of tropical fish we had not encountered before. One evening, we were surprised by a huge school of mullet repeatedly leaping clean out of the water. Fish in the tide pools are protected and they seem to know it. Game wardens patrol the area. Fortunately, the Suisan Fish Market in Hilo has a great selection of the eating variety and we grilled fresh fish practically every night on Mika Lani's Weber propane barbecue.
Also, the weather at Mika Lani seems several notches better than in Hilo or Pahoa. Often we would drive through torrential rains that would be replaced by sun breaks just a couple of miles before arriving at Mika Lani.
We hope to return soon, and would not hesitate to recommend this lovely spot to anyone (but may decide not to, for fear that the calendar will fill up too quickly...)
Cozy, sunny home directly on the beautiful snorkel tide pools. Colorful coral and fish just steps to the water. Merrie Monarch Hula Festival in Hilo is held each year during the week following Easter.
