Our Jewel by the Sea - Mika Lani is an exceptional vacation home, located on a beautiful protected snorkel bay containing colorful tropical fish and coral, with the ocean reef just beyond. You will be immersed in this aquatic wonderland just a few steps away from this private oceanfront retreat. Every room has a view of the ocean. This is a romantic, enchanting get-away for two.
There are many windows allowing for breathtaking views. Every amenity inside is luxurious, from the silk-like linens to the granite gourmet kitchen, from the dinnerware to the decorator touches in the furnishings. It includes high speed Internet and WiFi, SMART flat screen TV, well-stocked kitchen (just bring your fresh foods), snorkels, fins, beach reef shoes, beach towels, 2 kayaks, other aquatic amenities, guide books and insider information to make your Big Island Hawaiian vacation special and memorable. Sip your favorite beverage while relaxing in the oceanfront jacuzzi. Total serenity is yours. Just pack your swim suit and come on over.
Mika Lani is designed for two people only. It could be your honeymoon, a romantic get away, or any special occasion. Upgrades abound so that you have the comforts and amenities of home, yet far far from home. The home is small, yet roomy – just one bedroom with 2 upscale bathrooms. The surrounding lanai (deck) is huge with three sides facing the ocean. You will delight in the jacuzzi that sits right out on the oceanfront lanai. We have created a mini private oasis for you. The house is maintained to 5-Star standards. The décor is modern, serene, Zen-like, with Hawaiian touches scattered throughout – from the orchid sink to the wave-like tile, from abundant Hawaiian flowers to sea-foam glass highlights in many of the decorator touches.
The surrounding nature and the natural beauty of the area are astounding. Snorkeling is right outside your doorstep. The snorkel ponds are protected by a coral reef so they are calm, yet the crashing ocean waves are just beyond. We are located within a Marine Life Conservation district. One mile away, you can soak in the volcanically heated warm ponds of Ahalanui. A little farther down the road, you can surf or boogey board with the locals at Isaac Hale Beach, also known as Pohoiki. Volcano National Park is approximately one hour away. Black sand beaches, waterfalls, nature hikes, steam vent caves, botanical gardens and scenic drives through rain forests are all nearby. Hilo, the second largest city in the Hawaiian Islands, lies just 40 minutes away. This is old Hawaii at its natural best.

We fell in love in Hawaii and with Hawaii, and decided it had to be an intrinsic part of our lives. During the past 12 years, we have opened our vacation homes on the Hilo side of the Big Island for guests to share in our dream of Paradise. Our passion is providing you with lifetime memories of your very special trip to Hawaii.
This unique property is located just steps from the water. It is one of only 8 houses on the State Marine Preserve. The Hilo side of the Big Island is lush and green and has many exotic fruits and flowers. It is also old Hawaii at its best. It takes you off the tourist track, while you still vacation in luxury.
Our guest comments say it all. Many guests return year after year to relax and rejuvenate. Staying at Mika Lani is a gift to yourself.
We anticipated that Mika Lani would be a wonderful home since we previously stayed in a home on the beach in LA owned by the same person. We wanted a quiet retreat on the ocean away from the usual tourist areas like Kailua, and hoped for a place we could snorkel without a long drive. Mika Lani was perfect!
The directions and arrival instructions were clear and complete. We were welcomed by a lovely gift basket, fresh flowers and a bottle of champagne in the refrigerator. The "Aloha" book was wonderfully complete with detailed information about the area, markets, sights, and a tide table.
From the living room and the lanai, you can see and hear the surf about 200 yards away, but you are perhaps only 20 feet from the Kapoho Tidepools, a premier snorkeling location. The lanai wraps around the entire home so you can always find a comfortable, breezy, shaded spot to read. The lanai has 2 hammocks, a table and chairs for dining, comfortable chairs, and other seating so you are comfortable.
It is open, airy, with comfortable furniture, beds , appliances, dishes, big screen TV, WiFi and internet. Attention to high quality and detail is evident everywhere in contrast to the Ikea furnishings of many VRBOs. There are ceiling fans in all the rooms and lots of screened windows and big sliding doors which let the breeze in.
The “snorkel shed” off the lanai contains fins, masks and reef socks and a tub for rinsing the equipment, plus 2 bikes useful for peddling on the quiet streets and roads nearby along with an outdoor shower. Also on the lanai are a washer and dryer and a hot tub. You will also find two kayaks which we may use on our next trip. Everything you might want or need is there.
If you prefer to tour, Hilo is only 40 minutes away, and if you want to see the volcano it is an easy drive. The Hilo airport helicopter allowed us to see and smell the lava flows.
Mika Lani gave us a wonderful 11 days of quiet, sun and snorkeling, exactly what we were hoping for and exceeding our expectations. Seldom, perhaps never, have I stayed in a place that was so comfortable and inviting. We simply wanted to stay there and not drive anywhere. We have already reserved it for a return trip. Need I say more?
My husband and I were looking for a property that was close to both the Hilo area and the volcanoes so this seemed in the middle of both. I liked the fact that it wasn't commercial with lots of people and seemed private.
What a beautiful property and the owners were very nice to deal with in setting up the reservation. They sent plenty of information that we needed in advance of our arrival.
Once we got to the island and located Mika Lani (excellent directions, by the way !!!) , we were amazed to find a wonderful home full of amenities and right on the water. No loud surf, but just the gentle tidal pools that were loaded with fish. Snorkeling was AMAZING and my husband used 3 rolls of films shooting the coral and fish in his underwater camera.
We had breakfast on the front lanai every morning to the amazing views and the birds chirping and fish jumping. What a relaxing place. You will love the serenity here.
The facility is REALLY clean, down to the BBQ Grill, hottub, and washer and dryer. There is nothing that you will need that this home doesn't supply. There are snorkel masks, fins, kayaks, towels, a nice welcoming basket of goodies and even champagne. The kitchen is VERY well equipped! Everything was thought of by the gracious hosts.
We will come back to the islands at some point and we will stay at Mika Lani again. We highly recommend this vacation rental!
Don't hesitate to rent this spot. For the price, you'll have a wonderful spot that would be hard to beat.
We highly recommend Mika Lani!
We loved every second staying at beautiful, beautiful Mika Lani. The location was unbelievable and the home was spotless, spacious, and comfortable in every way. The area is very popular for snorkeling, so while we were almost always sharing the tide pools, the home is fenced and gated, so we always felt secure. When we weren’t snorkeling or kayaking, we were enjoying the huge wrap around lanai, with hammocks, a hot tub, barbeque, and several different interesting areas to relax. Sara and Jamie were incredibly thoughtful, with everything you could possibly imagine wanting available – things like earplugs and scotch tape that 99% of the time you would never expect to see. Also, the books and all the information on the area, wildlife, and Hawaiian culture were terrific. There was even a waterproof book on local fish you could take snorkeling! Nights were a little buggy for us at times, but we named the house gecko Felix and otherwise felt just as if we were in our own home in the tropics. The only thing we would have done differently is take our own snorkeling equipment – everything was just a little too small for my 6’2 spouse. We’ll know for next time! Overall, idyllic, magical, and wonderful … we couldn’t recommend the Jewel by the Sea more highly.
Mahalo Sara and Jamie for making our time on the island truly special. From the moment we walked in and saw the welcome package they had left for us, and heard the hawaiian music playing we felt welcome. This property is located about 40 mins outside of Hilo, but there are some great restaurants in a nearby town, and great sights and beaches down the red road. When we were on the island, lava was flowing into the ocean about 20-30 minutes away- we rode out at nite and parked and watched the lava flow into the ocean. Truly an experience you won't have anywhere else.
But honestly, you could spend your time there without ever leaving. House is right on the tide pools of Kapoho- each morning you wake up to a beautiful sunrise. Snorkeling gear, water shoes, kayaks and more are all there for you to enjoy and you could spend all day just enjoying the tide pools and seeing all the life under the water just steps outside your door. At the end of the day, slip into the hot tub with your favorite drink, most days we got a great sunset, even though it sets on the kona side of the island. They seem to have thought of all the details for us, coolers were there for day trips, laundry on-site kitchen well stocked, outdoor showers for rinsing off, everything in usable order. No A/C, can't remember if the desc says this or not, but open up the windows at night and turn on the fans at night and it cools right off. Seems to be the norm on the island. If you're spending the day in the house in Hawaii, you're doing it wrong anyway. Showers in each bath, everything clean including hot tub.
We did find ourselves driving a lot- this truly is the BIG island, and we did a lot of exploring, but would also have been perfectly content at home. If you're looking for adventure, pick up the copy of Hawaii Revealed off their coffee table and get exploring. We did- (and we had a 4x4, which I highly recommend if you're into adventure) and we discovered some amazing things, but being on the Hilo side meant the return from some of our trips was a pretty long drive across the saddle road.
I would not hesitate to rent this home again, it was more than I expected. Mahalo again to Sara and Jamie for sharing your home with us.
The Oceanfront Juwel says it all, it is a wonderful location and the house itselve provides all you can possibly need.Everything was perfectly organized and the suggestions of the owner couple helped a lot to find places and to do things beside the obvious.
Our stay was absolutely terrific it is quiet and secluded exept for Sunday's there are a lot of people coming and everybody has a different way of enjoying nature. Snorkeling is as if you were in a huge Aquarium, just amazing.
We are happy that we were able to be there and would love to come back.
Thank you !
This property was absolutely beautiful in every way! Very well maintained and very clean! Every convenience of home was available, plus fun extras such as kayaks and bicycles. The layout of the house was perfect with lots of doors and windows that could be opened for a wonderful breeze, and that provided an amazing view. We couldn't have been happier to find and stay at Mika Lani!
Cozy, sunny home directly on the beautiful snorkel tide pools. Colorful coral and fish just steps to the water. Merrie Monarch Hula Festival in Hilo is held each year during the week following Easter.
