About Katie Howland
About the owners Doug, Bev, Miranda, and Katie Howland: Doug and Bev were first drawn to Kauai in the early 80’s, after many visits they finally decided to buy this wonderful property in 2006. Doug, a 35-year designer/builder, has spent the last 10 years personalizing the house. Bev, a jack-of-all-trades, has owned a health food store, opened a charter elementary school, run a motel, and managed their various properties over the years. Their youngest daughter Katie lives in Portland with her older sister Miranda. After a career in the arts, Katie now manages the family’s properties. Doug and Beverly now migrate between their properties in Arizona, Utah, and Hawaii. They like to hike, horseback ride, ski, practice yoga, whitewater raft, dance, and travel in their free time. They also have vacation rentals in the Escalante Canyons of Southern Utah and in the town of Sedona in Northern Arizona.

Why Katie Howland chose Haena
Doug and Bev were always drawn to the North Shore, when making the decision to put down roots, they couldn’t resist the best part of the island. They fell in love with the unique beauty of their home that balances both accessibility and seclusion.
What makes this Cottage unique
There are many amazing natural wonders right out the front door (see above). This home offers the lush mountainous jungle of Kauai out the back door and the soothing beach and ocean out the front door.

North Shore bargain
Best place for the money west of Hanalei on Kauai's North Shore. Patricia is the best property manager anywhere. The owners and especially the guests are fortunate to have her help. Responsive clear answers whenever I texted her. One of the reasons we stayed here was its proximity to Tunnels Beach - one of the best snorkeling sites on Kauai. Be advised that there is a local group calling a large swath of the North Shore (from Na Pail State Park to Wainiha extending out one mile from shore) the Ha'ena Community Based Subsistence Fishing Area (CBSFA). They particularly target Tunnels, calling it Makua Pu'uhonua and the flyer they handed out at Ke'e Beach prohibited "any entry" into this area (Tunnels), labeling it kapu (prohibited). I was called out of the water while snorkeling Tunnels by two young "enforcers" of this policy. (But enforcement does seem spotty.) Patricia, the shuttle driver, and other locals suggested care in the choice of sunscreen, care of resources (don't feed fish or walk on the reef), but did not agree with the "ban" on Tunnels.
The cottage itself packs a great deal of functionality into a small area. The NE trade winds don't always make it back to the cottage. There were three fans in the unit (ceiling, vertical, and smaller unit) which, along with a fan that we brought, helped keep things tolerable most of the time. We were there during a heat wave and the temperature reached 90 in the cottage (we bought a thermometer to see how hot it really was). Anything 83 degrees and lower we found tolerable with fans but in the summer this is a very warm place to hang out between noon and 6:00 p.m. We have stayed at numerous places on Kauai without A/C and this was the first time we really missed it. It did cool off well at night and early morning temperatures ranged from 72 to 74. The outdoor shower was great. Although the mosquitos bothered us elsewhere outdoors, they never seemed to find us in the shower, regardless of time of day. Bed and pillows are great. Great utensils, plates, kitchenware, etc. We did use the bug zapper in the bathroom. It would be useful outdoors, but there was no extension cord to use it there. We stayed six nights and our love for the cottage grew during that time despite the heat. We ate most meals there and quickly learned that daytime use of the stove burners could raise the cottage temperature a couple of degrees. We would definitely return on a future visit.
North Shore Beach Local Experience
We very much enjoyed our stay at the cottage. It is very much as advertised. We enjoyed being away from the crowds, especially because the bridge was closed and it was just those who were staying past the bridge. We were able to cook all our meals inside. The bed was comfortable with a memory foam topper and the pillows were good as well. The cottage overall is fairly small and the kitchen is very basic. It got fairly warm inside from about noon until it cooled off at night so it’s not the place you go “to hang out in” although the deck in the back is quite nice and pleasant. The outdoor shower had plenty of hot water and good water pressure and it’s just woods behind you so privacy wasn’t a problem. I wouldn’t shower at night or if it were raining though. It is Hawaii and there are some bugs but not more than we were expecting. Tunnels and Ke’e Beach are amazing and close!! (Check on whether you need advanced reservations for parking). The beach across the street is rough and windy but good for a good stroll.
I think this is the perfect spot for the right people but if you are the type who prefers a resort, you should pass.
Loved this little place! Excellent location and easy access to beaches. Will definitely be back. Would like to arrange for bridge closure again next time! Beaches were empty!!
Katie, thank you for a wonderful stay at your beautiful cottage. It was just as great as the first time. David and Marie
We had an amazing time in Kauai. Given that the road is closed, we were able to use the bikes at the house and ride to the end of the road. The cottage was perfect for the two of us. Thanks again!
Its hard to describe. We where the second guests allowed on the north shore in over a year! Because of the road and bridges being worked on the whole area was only open to residents only! We where in heaven! The cottage was perfect, comfy bed, clean and set in a tropical jungle! Roosters? Yes. Mozzys? Yes. The roar of the ocean? All the time! Road bikes down open roads to empty beaches, BBQ'ed, took naps, and enjoyed the vibe. The host was super cool and helpful. On site laundry, boogie boards, bikes, outdoor shower. Perfect for two people. We want to go back today!!!!! Aloha
