Private Garden Cottage- by the Beach

Bedrooms Studio
Property type cottage

About the property

Cottage, Studio, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

Experience the incredible beauty of the north shore at the Garden Cottage in Haena, Kauai, located in the heart of the most beautiful 10 miles of the island. We are close to Tunnels Beach, and set between 2 of the top 5 rated beaches on the islands. Kepuhi beach is 50 yards down the driveway; directly behind is lush jungle hillside, the border to 1000's of acres of private nature conservancy land. All tucked into a quiet, secluded, tree lined cul-de-sac.

The private, cozy cottage interior features a high open-beam ceiling, wood floors, and tropical décor, along with cooking facilities. Outside is a private shower with a spectacular view of the jungle, private deck, barbecue, tiki torches to enjoy the evening, and all the style of old Hawaii.

If you are seeking a Honeymoon hideaway or romantic getaway...Relax to the soothing sound of rolling surf, enjoy a bonfire on your private beach, and just minutes away is Hanalei with restaurants, dancing and entertainment. You can walk the beach the entire final 2 miles to Ke’e, where the road ends and the famous Napali coast begins. Or you can walk the beach just 300 yards to the Hanalei Colony Resort, for the only (award winning) restaurant and coffee house on this part of the island. Or just take our beach chairs and walk the few steps to the beach out front!

We are an approved Kauai Vacation Rental TVNC #1052.

About Katie Howland

About the owners Doug, Bev, Miranda, and Katie Howland: Doug and Bev were first drawn to Kauai in the early 80’s, after many visits they finally decided to buy this wonderful property in 2006. Doug, a 35-year designer/builder, has spent the last 10 years personalizing the house. Bev, a jack-of-all-trades, has owned a health food store, opened a charter elementary school, run a motel, and managed their various properties over the years. Their youngest daughter Katie lives in Portland with her older sister Miranda. After a career in the arts, Katie now manages the family’s properties. Doug and Beverly now migrate between their properties in Arizona, Utah, and Hawaii. They like to hike, horseback ride, ski, practice yoga, whitewater raft, dance, and travel in their free time.

They also have vacation rentals in the Escalante Canyons of Southern Utah and in the town of Sedona in Northern Arizona.

Katie Howland purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Katie Howland chose Haena

Doug and Bev were always drawn to the North Shore, when making the decision to put down roots, they couldn’t resist the best part of the island. They fell in love with the unique beauty of their home that balances both accessibility and seclusion.

What makes this cottage unique

There are many amazing natural wonders right out the front door (see above). This home offers the lush mountainous jungle of Kauai out the back door and the soothing beach and ocean out the front door.

Guestbook comments from the owner

What a gem this cottage is! We thoroughly enjoyed our time here and thank you for sharing part of your homestead! Loved the noises at night and all the birds in the morning. This place has everything we needed-especially-tranquility! Mahalo!

Great cozy cottage

  • 5 of 5

Nice little cottage! Very cute, clean, and cozy. We really loved the outdoor shower. The beach is literally across the street. We didn’t get sunny weather but if we had, this trip would have been perfect. We would definitely stay here again! Host was also kind enough to refund us one night (without even having to ask) because a landslide prevented us from reaching the cottage the first night. Good people!

Private, beautiful get away on the north shore

  • 5 of 5

The private garden cottage was an amazing start to our honeymoon. A gorgeous beach is right across the street which is rocky but if you walk 5 minutes to the left on the beach there is a beautiful swimming area most days on an almost private beach. We were here during the “ rainy season” but we got beautiful sunshine all but one day. I do believe this is the most beautiful part of the island and definitely away from all the tourists on the east side and south which is what we wanted. The outdoor shower is amazinggggg and the bed is so comfortable. There are mosquitos outside at night but it’s hawaii so that should be expected. We also cooked a few meals and went into hanalei a few nights. Katie and Patricia were very helpful and made us feel right at home as if we were family. I definitely would recommend this beautiful private cottage to any couple looking for a romantic secluded getaway on the beautiful north shore of kauai.

Wonderful Vacation Cottage by the Beach

  • 5 of 5

This is the perfect romantic cottage for 2 if you which to stay near the beach in Haena North Shore. The Cottage is very private and quiet. Being able to hear the ocean waves at night in a large comfortable bed was a joy. The cottage is clean, well stocked with stove, oven, microwave and all that you could require. The back porch with dining table is surrounded by teakie lanterns. The ourdoor shower is very pleasant and fun. The beach is just a few steps away. Our host Katie Howland was amazing with a warm welcome and many suggestions on how and what to do on the North Shore. We cannot wait to return!!

Authentic Kauai Honeymooning Hippie Haven

  • 5 of 5

Please do not come here unless you have an idea of what real Aloha or Mana is – there is no pool, no room service, no restaurant, no daily maid, no ocean view, no cable TV, no daycare, no activities desk, none of that ‘opala.

The drive was heavenly, and then we took a little footpath to a beach like no other, anywhere. Yes, we’re in love….with our heavenly Ha’ena island garden paradise. Unmatched by any pretty penny hotel or ancient timeshare, completely private and well-equipped, a Taylor Camp cabin revisited, perfect and unforgettable.

The Hanalei area is outrageously expensive and over-hyped, overrun with tourists, and mediocre service is to be expected – staying in Ha’ena was pure, a bona fide gem. No dinner out (Bar Acuda, Postcards, Kalypso) was competition for our tiki patio with new grill, save Kauai Ono, Tahiti Nui or sushi from The Dolphin. Buy groceries at Foodland (beware the parking lot is incendiary) in Princeville, the kitchen is well-quipped, and there’s no better place to eat than on your lanai under the fronds.

Like Elvis sang, Kauai is the island of love – for lovers. Fantasy Island with Mr. Roarke and Tattoo. Somehow it has become commonplace for couples to bring infant newborns and their grandparents everywhere on the North Shore (quel faux pau), so the privacy and seclusion of the cottage was a welcome reprieve from coffee carriers, stroller pushers, and cell phone zombies. We saw practically no one, and we were free to conduct ourselves unencumbered of sightseers and day-trippers found at hotels or everywhere along the coast. The beach across the street is the best around – dramatic crashing surf, stunning mountain views – and no people – Nirvana. Limahuli Garden down the road was awe-inspiring, literally like visiting King Kong’s 1976 island – a fantasy come to fruition!

We did have a lot of rain, which was to be expected, and the bridge did close, once – and it was fantastic! Showering outside in the Wai’ale’ale rain is magical, even better when accompanied though. There were virtually no bugs, but the roosters were certainly crowing all day long – now that we’re home I kind of miss it.

For the reasons listed above and many others not listed, one of the best trips to Hawaii ever.

The Garden Cottage was all we could have wanted in a Hawaiian habitat. Authentic, well preserved construction, beautifully appointed and tucked away in lush landscape. Just close enough to the Napali trail and the town of Hanalei.
