About Owner

I decided to restructure this small villa and the beautiful old farmhouse which shares the grounds. The whole enterprise was a major restructuring job. In addition, fields had to be converted into gardens so so we now have 2-3 acres of olive grove and gardens. I enjoy meeting my guests from all over the world and making sure that they are well-looked after. I am very lucky in having good helpers, particularly the housekeepers and the gardener. Each year I plan a new project for the garden. Of these, the nicest so far are a secret garden, a formal Italian garden and a rose garden. The most recent project is a surprise xeric garden (local low-maintenance plants ideal for this climate) in the olive grove, and is centered on a sculpture I designed which was executed by a local craftsman. Just that small project took 9 months! I love to get guests' suggestions for new projects.

Why Owner chose Cortona area

This area, the Val di Chiana is strategically located to see some of the finest parts of Tuscany. There are stunningly beautiful towns like nearby Cortona, and the wine-producing hill-towns of Montepulciano and Montalcino. The countryside is magnificent in every season. Florence is only 1 hour away, Siena 45 minutes, and Rome a little more than 2 hours. This area is still unspoilt. There are excellent reasonably priced local restaurants and lots to do. We provide details and touring itineraries.

What makes this villa unique

Most guests say that the gardens and olive grove are the best features of La Colonica. Others like the dining patio and its views. All like the comfort of the house which is air-conditioned and cool in summer and cozy with an open wood fire in winter. There is much to see and do in the area: we provide itineraries. Or else, just stay at home, enjoy the sun, explore the property and its various gardens. Eat out on the patio, using our home-grown organic olive oil. Have a barbecue! Enjoy the local food and wine: buy home-made fresh pasta, or try out the local pastry-shops. Discover your favorite gelato (ice-cream). Visit the designer discount outlet malls nearby. Go to one of the many local festivals and meet the local people!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Our first visit to Tuscany. Beautiful location. Your suggestions of side trips were wonderful. We enjoyed many of the local wines and the olive oil from your property was enjoyable. We were referred to come here by relatives and will continue this tradition of telling other Canadians about this little place of beauty.

LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION!

  • 5 of 5

This is a truly wonderful place to stay but its biggest selling point is its location. We went to Florence by train in one hour, and to Siena, Assisi, Perugia, and every single wine-producing hilltown you can think of by car - all less than one hour away.

The cottage is brilliantly decorated, really spacious and has proper air-conditioning in every room. Two really good sized bedrooms and immaculately clean bathrooms. Beautiful living areas (really well-designed and decorated) but we more or less lived on the patio from breakfast on. Everything is well-cared for and you can see it. There is huge attention to detail. Very nice unobtrusive owners and staff including the cleaner who is a darling. We wanted self-catering but we ended up eating out a lot and found some great ristoranti - the owners provide a guide and do the bookings if you want. Best thing of all - once you get inside the gates of the property, its like you're in another world. We have been to Italy seven times now and this is definitely our favorite. Last but not least - the cost is very reasonable as everything is included. We are going back!

Wonderful memories

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful memories of our stay. We were lucky enough to have warm weather in early November (it seems this is usual) so it felt like September. As all the reviews say, the villa is a dream – spotless clean, bright, very well appointed and SO comfortable. We toured around, enjoyed the towns without the summer visitors, had wonderful meals and relaxed totally. The highlights of our trip? So many, but definitely Assisi and Siena. One day we went to Gubbio – a long drive but worth it for the wonderful scenery and the beautiful town. La Colonica was the perfect base. Our hosts and the wonderful staff were so kind and helpful. Excellent value for the money. Highly recommended.

Simply perfect

  • 5 of 5

This villa, La Colonica, was the perfect choice for us. It is quiet and well located for seeing the beautiful Tuscany countryside and villages. It is also very convenient for the bigger towns like Florence, Siena and Perugia. The villa is exactly as shown on the website. It is very well furnished and maintained. It is fully equipped, down to the smallest detail. We received a welcome gift of wonderful home-produced organic olive oil, wine and other local produce. The grounds are very beautiful. The owners were charming and exceptionally helpful. They never intruded but were always available to answer any questions we had. We enjoyed everything about our stay and give it top marks. Although we rarely return to places, we will probably make an exception in the case of La Colonica. It is simply perfect.

Wonderful

  • 5 of 5

La Colonica has to be the best equipped holiday rental that we have ever stayed in. The photos on the website are accurate but the reality is even better! It is very conveniently situated for touring Tuscany and the owners provide detailed itineraries for half and full day trips from the villa. They could not be more helpful. The grounds and views are idyllic and everything is so generously provided from basic commodities to fresh flowers and fruit from the garden. We found a bottle of wine and two bottles of water chilling in the fridge. The village of Marciano della Chiana is charming and other villages nearby have all the amenities you could possibly need for both self catering and dining out. Very highly recommended.

Amazing villa - Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at La Colonica in August and could not have been happier with our choice. The villa is just adorable - no other word for it! It was so welcoming and just feels good. Nothing showed signs of wear and everything looked brand new. The gardens are fantastic and we loved walking around. We practically lived on the patio. There are many very good restaurants in the area. Do not miss Osteria del Teatro in Cortona tho' we also had a superb meal in Rigomagno on the way back from Siena (forget the name but it was the only restaurant in that little town). Cortona is lovely but we liked the smaller villages best. Our hosts were fantastic and we could not have been nicer or more helpful. We loved the peace and quiet of La Colonica, and the comfort of it. It is quite amazing - we would go back tomorrow if we could. Grazie!

Unbelievable holidays in Tuscany!

  • 5 of 5

We’ve spend the beautiful time in the brilliant place in Tuscany - villa “La Colonica”. If you want to feel and touch the atmosphere of this fascinating land , you can find it here. Amazing olive grove (it looks like a little bit in a frosty fog), very nice lawn, cozy terrace with a plenty view of Tuscan landscapes and huge endless sky above. After our day trips “ searching of new impressions” – we visited Florence, Pisa, Arezzo, Cortona, Montepulciano- it’s so lovely to sit on terrace, enjoying these magnificent pictures again and again.

I’ve read a lot of reviews about “La Colonica” and join with opinions of many visitors, concerning very comfortable conditions of accommodations (a lot of things that make life easier and more enjoyable), interesting interior.

Thanks a lot of Cesare and David for their hospitality and kindness, recommendations exciting tours, delicious authentic cuisine, booking tickets for us to the famous places in Florence.

Wonderful intelligent and wise dog Rocco- we remember you with tenderness!

We wish everyone to spend happy time in “La Colonica” , as we did.

Nataly and my family – Alex and Alex.
