House is located right behind Fred's General Store. Address: 102 Christie Way
A 5 minute walk to the slopes; easier than walking from the best spots in the resort parking lots. House is on a dead end, paved level road with little traffic. Due to the cool nature of Beech Mountain, most houses (including this one) do not have air conditioning.
This three floor A frame house over looks adjacent creek. Large loft with double futon, queen sized bed, television, claw foot tub in the bathroom, and back deck with Upper Shawneehaw views. Middle floor den, kitchen, bathroom and two bedrooms with queen size beds. The lower floor has a large room with bar, bath and two rooms one with kingsize bed the other has a queen bed. The house is ideal for four couples with four kids. Wild blueberry bushes dot the side yard. Foosball in the lower floor also.
7 area restaurants within walking distance or three min. drive.
House has been newly renovated with hardwood floors and heated slate floors. Two floors with fireplaces. New appliances and counters in kitchen. Hot tub over looks creek. Bath towels are not provided.
Had a great stay at Peter's house of wood! There was plenty of room and everything we needed was there. The hot tub was fantastic, as well as the whole downstairs/basement area. We couldn't have asked for better weather conditions for the weekend. Made for some great shreddin'! Getting to the slopes at the end of the road was no more than a five minute walk which was perfect for us. If you stay here make sure to check out Fred's(five min walk) and make sure to play Jenga(on the mantle)...you should get a few good laughs.
The cabin was clean and the beds, other than the king in the master, were comfortable. That's about all I can say on a positive note. It took several attempts to get a response from Peter. He does not respond to E-mail.
He did however contact us by phone on the day we were arriving, to tell us that the microwave did not work. Unfortunately, this was after we had already been to the grocery store and bought several microwave only items.
The toaster did not work either. Nor did the heater in the main floor bathroom. Nor the downstairs fridge. The kitchen is a one person kitchen, making it a bit difficult to cook for a large crowd. The burners on the "new kitchen appliances" were so lopsided, the pans nearly slid off the top. One of the few pots was so corroded on the bottom, it was not usable.
We attempted to use the washing machine and it leaked out all over the floor of the downstairs bedroom. Yes, the washer and dryer is in one of the bedrooms. And since we had to bring our own towels (we flew in from Florida), we were not pleased to have to travel home with wet, dirty towels.
The entire cabin is decorated in 60's-70's hodge podge, Goodwill furnishings. The leather sofa in the main living was thread bare. Most of the blinds were broken and the window treatments were deplorable. I am a bit surprised that this cabin is advertised through VBRO. We have rented through VBRO many times in the past and have never had this experience. At least we didn't have to worry about the children damaging any of the furniture.
We did indeed walk to the slopes in our ski boots, but with three small children, this was not easy. This was after we had to walk to Fred's to find out how to get to the slopes. There was no owner's manual or any type of instructions available in the cabin. We had no way to regulate the heat, so at night the bedrooms on the main floor were very hot while the living room was cold.
We were charged a $50.00 fee for the wood that did not burn. It was either too wet or not adequately cured. We had to purchase fireplace logs from Fred's. We also had to purchase kindling.
Despite all of this, we did have an enjoyable family weekend. There was a lot of snow but it was freezing cold (-10 degrees with the wind chill factor) and a total white out with fog one day. Plus, there were a lot of "out of control" skiers and snow boarders on the mountain, making it very dangerous with small children. We will never ski in N.C again.
Peter's house was just fantastic.
After finding the cabin clean and well organized our group of 11 had a blast. We all slept comfortably and without feeling too crowded (although we were all good friends anyway) and look forward to staying at Peter's place again.
Our only minor issue was the layout of the kitchen as we tried to coordinate cooking a group dinner. Only 2 people could effectively work with the relatively small counter space, but it hardly put a dent in the fun we had with the game room downstairs, the hottub that was clean and ready to go, the 2 great fireplaces and the proximity to Beech Mountain.
Thanks for the great weekend.
The home over all is big and plenty of room for groups. The location is great and Fred's is wonderful. The home is a bit older but has a nice cabin feel.
The customer service could be improved upon. We were asked to bring extra towels for the hot tub, kind of a pain since we were flying in. Peter was supposed to show up with kindling for the fire, he never showed or called back. When we left I, I forgot my new Fitbit (150.00) in a bedroom, I left 5 messages, with no return calls.
With no snow we still had a good time with the creek below, biking and hiking :-)
Over all is the was nice, with no snow :-( The home was big enough for everyone to have their own space and the kids enjoyed the creek below. Fred's is around the corner which was great and not nearly as expensive as we would have thought :-) The only issue we had was Peter returning of calls and no show. I left my new Fitbit in the bedroom when we left and I left 5 messages asking him to pls call me as I would pay for shipping, no return call. He was also going to drop of kindling one night for a fire and never showed up or called. Other than that the place was nice.
A group of friends, four couples in all, decided we needed an affordable weekend getaway for some relaxation. It happened to be a very foggy weekend which made the weekend even more perfect. We stayed in and cooked, played games and relaxed in the hot tub all weekend. The house was perfect we all had our own very private rooms. Everything was very clean and convientient to our needs. There was a wonderful game room, with a tv and bar area. Exactly what we needed. Thank you Peters House of Wood.
