Step into a different world. Lake Atitlán is one of the most exquisitely beautiful places on earth. Surrounded by volcanoes and steeped in indigenous culture, it's an intoxicating place to spend your vacation. Palatalik is a lovely, comfortable new lakeside house, designed by a Guatemalan architect and built by local craftsmen. It's on the 'car free' side of the lake -- accessible only by water taxi from the nearby town of Panajachel.
Wake up to the sunrise over Atitlán and Tolimán, two of the three volcanoes visible from our house. Fall asleep watching the natural light show created by storms caught miles away behind them. In between, you can swim from our dock in the clear, cool waters of the lake, walk to a nearby restaurant for lunch, take a boat to a nearby village to study Spanish, climb the volcanoes, or ride horses...or just hang out on one of the three terraces and read or watch the local fisherman go by in their wooden canoes.
The house is great for families.
Hi, I am Royston 'Rory' Delaney, proud, new owner of Palatalik. I am an attorney who spends most (too much) of the year in Boston, Massachusetts.
Royston Delaney purchased this house in 2013
It is said that if you swim in the waters of Lake Atitlan, you will return. That turned out to be true for me. I came here in 1995 on a meandering journey through central America and, of all the places I have seen then and since, this is where I left my heart.
So, nearly twenty years later I returned with my wife and three children (10, 8 and 6) for Christmas 2012/2013. When the family saw the splendor of the lake and the wildlife they needed no persuasion that this was the place for us and so we bought Palatalik from Debra who built it six years earlier. Now the children are planning tree houses and learning Spanish.
I was impressed by the location, but on a more mundane level I was impressed with the build quality of the house and its cleanliness! It is tidier and cleaner than my home in Boston! I hope to retire to the lake some day, but in the meantime the house is available for others to enjoy. Royston ('Rory') Delaney
"We had a fantastic trip to Guatemala! We loved Palatalik and Lake Atitlan and had many many fun adventures."
What a beautiful home, amazing views, and a great location on one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. We can't say enough glowing things about this place! The gardens are fantastic, and Pablo, the caretaker, couldn't have been more helpful to us during our month-long stay. He helped to make arrangements for an occasional cook for us, private boat rides to neighboring villages around the lake (although it was easy to flag down the public "lanchas" from the dock in front of the house) and assisted in finding a Spanish School in Santa Cruz for me. The quick 10 minute walk to the school in Santa Cruz is along boardwalks on stilts above the water along the shore of the lake, and I had to pinch myself as I walked the route each morning....it is SO beautiful! There are several restaurants within walking distance, and the Isla Verde restaurant (great food) is only a 5 minute walk. Watching the sunrise from the house patios and drinking Guatemalan coffee.... and watching the sunset over a volcano while drinking a glass of wine were some of our favorite pastimes during our stay. After visiting the different villages around the lake, we were glad to be located in Santa Cruz la Laguna.... away from the tourist and hippie crowds.
You will love this place...can't wait to go back.
From the moment we pulled up to Palatalik we knew we were going to have a great time. We just got back from our week vacation at this house and my family and i had an awesome time. The house was as berautiful and clean as the pictures shows and the garden was beautiful. There were great resturaunts within walking distance in each way with incredible views of the lake.
Pablo, the caretaker was extremly helpful and kind and gave us helpful hints with any questions we had. The kids had a great time swimming in the lake as well as visting the small towns that surround the lake. We spent a week but could have stayed laonger as there was alot to do and see.
Truely one of te most beautiful views from the house that you will find.
We hope to return one day!!!!!
In decades of visits to Atitlán, this was without a doubt the most relaxing time we've spent on the lake. The house is lovely and very comfortable, arguably even better than the photos. The stunning views from almost every room are breathtaking. Swimming off the dock was a highlight for adults and children, as was the charming walk to Santa Cruz. We look forward to returning for a longer visit.
The house is nice and clean. The garden is beautiful with different plants, flowers, and fruit trees. The view from the kitchen is fabulous. Additionally, you may find yoga classes, kayaking, and rock climbing within a few minutes walking distance from the house. We really enjoyed it.
On arrival we walked up the beautiful landscaped garden and found other renters in the house. It turns out that Debra had made a mistake & double booked the house for one night, so we had to quickly find our own lodging.
The house was as described, cozy & pleasant.
After we returned home we spent a week sending e-mails back & forth trying to get our money refunded for the night we weren’t able to stay in the house.
This unique house sits high above the lake just past Santa Cruz. The garden leading up to the house is beautiful. The rooms are spacious. The views from the decks are spectacular. There are plenty of amenities to this house. Even during a rainy day we sat in the kitchen and played board games we found in the house. It was great to have a washer and dryer to dry our clothes after being on the lake in a boat and getting wet. Only caution is to watch out for the spiders and scorpions. Don't go barefoot. The mornings are best as the lake is calm and a good time to go swimming off the dock. We found an information book that was filled with lots of suggestions for things to do. See Lee a few doors down who rents kayaks. he also does lake tours that will pick you up at the dock in front of the house. Very nice place to get away from it all!
