The house is on inclined lot with 1 bedroom on upper level and 2 bedrooms on the lower level. Setting on bluff overlooking the Pacific, the nightly gathering of crab boats form a necklace of lights on the horizon. Wood-burning stove provides generous heat throughout upper floor. Baseboard heating throughout. The studio kitchen has maple cabinets and granite counters with all the expected amenities: utensils, pots, pans and basic cooking ingredients.
High quality furniture and extensive book collection throughout the house. A large, multi-level lower patio for outdoor gatherings, picnics, and soothing ocean viewing. Ideal for couples, retreats, or a gathering of friends and family. As the only house on the cul-de-sac, there's plenty of parking. We have furnished this house with furniture, books, and art for our guests and ourselves (we visit often). You'll not be disappointed here.
Point Montara Lighthouse next door: Point Montara Lighthouse with breathtaking coastline and secluded beach is 3 min. walk.
Renowned Fitzgerald Marine Reserve is teeming with starfish, anemones, and more.
Historic and reportedly haunted Moss Beach Distillery is 3/4 mile down coast.
Half Moon Bay offers eating experiences from honest country coffee shops to elegant cuisine.
Fishing harbor offers whale watching tours and fishing charters.
Outstanding golfing overlooking the ocean and Ritz-Carlton Hotel.
Hiking, bicycling, and horseback riding on the Coastal Trail
I've come to realize how much I enjoy enhancing the value of a home, so I now call myself a 'property manager'. My wife, Carol, is a first grade teacher and we also have 3 children who have young families in Calif. and Indiana. When I'm not playing with property design, I'm probably out training on my bike or reading or writing something. Owning this piece of 'Ocean Heaven', that we also get to enjoy, makes us feel deeply fortunate indeed.
Allen & Carol Price purchased this house in 2006
We never planned, in a million years, to buy an ocean side property. Yet, one day after visiting at the nearby lighthouse, I expressed a long-held desire to 'just see inside' a house perched beside the Pacific. Within minutes a 'For Sale' sign appeared and we couldn't resist. We were knocked out by the view... and the price! It was not just a 'slice of the ocean'... but a panoramic view! Recovering several hours later, we started having 'Purpose of Life' conversations. Soon, the house was ours.
It's intimate and simple with many private spaces to savor. The Writer's Cottage below the lower patio is a world away.
"I want to express my thanks for letting us stay in you stunning home.
I am a single mom so I work pretty hard, but this expense was so worth it to me & my children. Our time here we will never forget!"
We came to Montara for our son's wedding and Thanksgiving. This cottage was a perfect spot for our family of 5 and very close to our son's new family. The incredible views were such a treat. We had plenty of room to spread out--each of us had a favorite spot for relaxing, reading or whale watching. We enjoyed being able to walk to the lighthouse and bluffs trail, and especially enjoyed the quick drive to Montara State Beach to hunt for sea glass. The full size stove and oven allowed us to contribute 6 pies for Thanksgiving!
We would certainly stay here again!
The downstairs is best for young adults or kids as the spiral staircase is steep.
My husband, sister and brother in law and I stayed here for 5 days. The house was spotless and very comfortable. We had the upper bedroom and the mattress was very comfortable. It's the type of place that makes you feel right at home. The views are gorgeous and the sunsets were very pretty. The location is the best, right on the ocean. Also, the book selections are great! We would stay here again. Would like to thank Allen and Carol for sharing this comfy, wonderful place.
My two sisters and I planned a 75th birthday celebration for my mom and were so happy we chose this house. The beaches in the area and Fitzgerald Marine Reserve have always been family favorites. We loved the house--there are so many places to sit and read a book or have a conversation, and the views out the many ocean-facing windows were amazing.
The house is fully equipped with good cooking pans and kitchenware. All of the beds were very comfortable, which was important for all of us middle-aged and older folk!
We partly chose this house because the owners seemed very friendly, and this was truly the case. Allen greeted us and was wonderfully warm and hospitable. They also left us alone to enjoy our stay, and were available when we called with a couple of questions.
We are already looking forward to planning another stay.
We stayed four nights in Allen's home (last week) overlooking the Pacific Ocean. I did a few hours of research before deciding/inquiring on this home.
My parents were flying in from Baltimore to meet us (my husband/myself/6-yr old daughter) from Florida. We spent a few days exploring the Bay area/San Francisco before heading to Redding/Bethel for a conference.
I'm so glad we settled on this place. It became a sweet respite from the city. It is close enough to explore San Francisco which we did as thoroughly as we could. We went to Muir Woods which is about 1.5 hrs from this home in Moss Beach.
My parents celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary with the views from the home and with the walks to the lighthouse (a few minutes from the house.) Watch the movie, "The Bandits", to see great footage of the lighthouse at Point Montara and the private beach there.
We live on a bay/Gulf of Mexico in Florida. The Pacific in its grandeur with all of the ocean air smells and crashing waves is awe-inspiring. The water in April is frigid and not to our liking, however, we put our feet in and my daughter and I squealed in delight.
I am also a semi-'germaphobe' which means I travel with clorox wipes and wipe down tv remotes and the flushers on toilets and other commonly held everyday objects in homes I do not own.
This house passed my test. It isn't the 'Ritz' so have some perspective, but, the home is pretty clean and I could stay there anxiety free after wiping a few things down. It is a pretty neat and tidy home. I did kill a couple spiders and a few ants but only in the bathroom and kitchen. My husband did not notice anything in this area, by the way.
Allen stopped by to check in on us and the earlier review was accurate. He is so kind and pleasant and helpful, but, not obtrusive. What glorious balance! What a beautiful person - rich in knowledge and enthusiasm.
My 70-yr old father (an avid reader) appreciated the extensive book collection. We delighted in the varying positions occupied in the books (we delighted in our debates/discussion about what Allen's positions actually are.) The Bible is next to a Richard Dawkins book. Hmmmm....
All in all... we are so thankful that we chose this place. The endless views, panoramic walks... a washer/dryer for a clean-freak, a kitchen that my mom could cook in if she wanted. Games for our brilliant, 6-year old. We legitimately can not beat her at memory. Perfect location..We hope to return one day - God willing!
Our family of four (two teenagers) had a lovely time in the cottage. While the square footage is small, the layout of the house affords a lot of privacy. Our daughter especially enjoyed the writer's cottage as her own special nook!
The house has amazing ocean views from almost every window, and the short walk to the lighthouse beach is a great way to end the day. All the tourist destinations of the City -- Alcatraz, Fisherman's Wharf, Golden Gate Park, China Town, etc., are a short drive up the highway -- @ 30-40 minutes to any destination. When you are done with the crowds, escape back to your ocean home!
Allen is a pleasure to work with - so friendly and helpful but not intrusive.
Rent this cottage - you will be glad you did!!
The cottage is just as advertised with views of the Pacific from just about every window. Cozy but plenty of room. for the six of us. Having breakfast on the counter looking over the ocean is a special treat. The living room is bigger than it looks from the pictures and a good spot to watch a late night movie. There's plenty to do within a walk or short drive, taking in the lighthouse and beach, downtown Half Moon Bay or the tide pools at Fitzgerald Marine Reserve. The cottage was clean, bright and welcoming. Allen is friendly and gracious.
This is a romantic ocean house at the end of a road with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean. There is a great sense of privacy and seclusion with large windows along ocean side.
You'll soon see why this house is centered in most of the movie-making that has occurred on this coast. Scenes from 'Memior of a Giesha', Bandits, and the just-released movie, 'Chasing Mavericks' were all taken place very near to the house. The latest movie having studio trailers parked right on our very street.
Seasonal Weather Note: November through March are precious times near the ocean with more dramatic waves and clearer skies.
