Why stay here and not elsewhere?: We believe that details make a difference, so we supply several complimentary extras to add to your enjoyment of the property. There will be a bottle of local wine and chocolates, seasonal decor, and what you might need to enjoy a day at the beach. We include beach bags with towels, mats, and frisbees. Also, special occasion extras upon request.
The Viking House is a prime location to enjoy the Sonoma County coast. While Bodega Bay is often foggy and grey, it's been our experience that Jenner generally gets more hours of sunshine, even in the winter. Although it's not unusual to see fog in the mornings in all four seasons, the weather remains pleasant throughout the majority of the year. In summer, it's bright with warm sun, but, with gentle ocean breezes, it remains much cooler than inland areas.
Russian River: Kayaking and canoeing are some of the best ways to experience the river. Just down the street from the house, you can rent a kayak and experience a whole different perspective of the town and the surrounding hills. Paddle around Penny Island, go to Goat Rock beach or get up close and personal with birds and seals fishing in the mouth of the river. When you get tired, you can bring the kayak up to shore at the house and rest before heading out again. Once you've explored the areas around Jenner, you can head upriver to Duncan's Mills and Guerneville where you can also rent equipment to enjoy redwood views in slower moving waters. For more details about the area and our home, visit our website, see link below.
Bodega Bay: A visit to the bustling fishing community of Bodega Bay will be a highlight of your stay. On the way, you can stop at a variety of beaches, including Shell beach, one of the best places to explore wildlife in Tidal pools and study interesting geological rock formations. When you get to Bodega Bay, exploring the shops, art galleries and fine restaurants is a pleasant way to enjoy the area. Also, many coastal adventures can be arranged. You can book and rent gear for all kinds of fishing and watersport outings, including deep sea fishing, whale watching (in season), surfing and more. Horse lovers will enjoy riding on the beach through Chanslor Stables. Golfers will relish memorable views while hitting a round at Bodega Harbour Golf Links, an 18 hole Scottish links style course. Film buffs will enjoy taking a short drive inland to the town of Bodega where Alfred Hitchcock filmed the classic movie, 'The Birds.'
My partner and I, along with our small Norfolk Terrier had the privilege of staying at The Viking House through the Christmas holiday! With so many property / vacation management companies not allowing a Christmas Day check-in, we decided to forgo the middle-man this time...we are so glad we did!
Diane was very communicative at the start. Not only was she thrilled that we would be staying in her vacation rental over the holiday, she made it super easy for us with directions, and a lock-box on the door with a house key! This is Diane's home and that of her family's. She has taken so much great care in providing the smallest touches to make one's stay comfortable and enjoyable. We both love to travel to Scandinavia and Northern Europe, so it was fun to read about the history of the Viking Home!
The kitchen was stocked with all of the spices, condiments, complete array of serving dishes / utensils, flatware, EVERYTHING! There was nothing we couldn't locate. This was probably the first home where the owners provided an abundance of paper towels, tissue, cleaning supplies, etc. The home is so charming, we wanted to take care of this as if it were our very own.
The view is expansive. When you walk into the Viking House, you will see the glorious Russian River as it snakes it's way to the mouth of the Pacific. Views to Goat Rock Beach, Blind Beach and a plethora of sea life is viewed from every window in the upstairs. The sunsets were amazing. The cold days and nights were kept at bay with the space heaters and super-efficient wood-burning stove! The home is situated just right, so that there is no road noise from HWY 1. It is very safe for your little four-legged / furry kids as well.
There was no noise from nearby neighbors either - really, our 3 night stay was a total disconnect from work and family. We enjoyed the lovely Christmas decorations Diane set out, along with candy treats and a welcome bottle of champagne from a very close champagne cellar! The notes left around the house (instructions more than anything) were written with care and not bossy or demanding, as we have seen in homes of the past.
I cannot recommend Diane's home enough - and yes, we will be back, for sure. We are already looking forward to our next stay at the Viking House. If you are fortunate to have availability for an intended stay, be sure to book a reservation for lunch or dinner at River's End.

It is a wonderful house in a truly beautiful location. I was a little worried about traffic noise since it is right on a road, but the house is set back and it was NO problem at all! Highly recommended!!!!! Hope to go back soon myself!
Amazing. We spent 10 days between Napa, Jenner and San Fran for our October honeymoon. The weekend spent in Jenner was an absolute highlight. Diane was amazing in the planning process and even left us a nice note with champagne and chocolate. The views (sunsets) were incredible and the 2 days were relaxing, peaceful and complete bliss. Thank you for having us and we can't wait to return!
My husband and I spend three nights at this lovely riverfront home along with our two dogs. The house is directly on the river with views toward the mountains and the sea with beautiful sunrises and sunsets. From your morning coffee to afternoon cocktail on the deck you'll see all manner of wildlife including many species of birds, seals, and deer.
The house is located within walking distance to River's End, a terrific restaurant, as well as the little town of Jenner proper which has a market, gas station and cafe. A short drive away you have access to gorgeous state parks and beaches. (Blind Beach is pet friendly however they must be leashed.)
The house was very well supplied and thoughtful, even treats for the dogs.
We stayed for 2 nights and had the most relaxing time. It is located on the highway with ample parking in the front. There is a really nice deck out the back right on the river. The house was clean and fully equipped, even had dog treats waiting for our fur baby! Wireless worked great, but our cell carrier did not which was fine by us! You can rent kayaks, canoes etc just down the street. We spent most of the time on the deck watching them, the seals, pelicans, hawks, lots of different birds. House was very quiet at night, beautiful views. We will be back!
We stayed for two nights to celebrate my partner's birthday (a surprise), and the house was everything I hoped it would be. Key to my partner's enjoyment is cleanliness, and it was excellent in this respect - no sticky kitchen utensils or haphazardly cleaned bathrooms - by far, the cleanest house we have rented. The location is amazing - right on the river. I was concerned that being situated directly on Hwy 1, we would hear road noise, but we heard absolutely no traffic (house is below the road level) - only thing to wake us was the barking of sea lions in the mornings. I was also worried that the lack of central heat would make a January stay uncomfortably cold, but between the wood burning stove and the space heaters, we were warmer than we are at home. The downstairs sleeping area was perfect for us too. Our 11 year old daughter was near us, but we all still had our own space. It was a cozy, wonderful weekend!
We spent a wonderful week in The Viking House. Jenner is a unique spot, where the Russian River meets the ocean, and the best part of our stay was the view from the upper deck, where we could watch the tide going in and out, the seals, the birds, the kayakers...so peaceful. The photos do not lie!
The house is immaculate and the kitchen is more than well-stocked, the bath towels are plush and numerous, and there is a lot of information on sites to visit in the area. However, we were happiest enjoying the house, sitting and reading on the deck, and watching the life on the river. The owners have taken great pains to make a visitor's stay comfortable - and were very prompt and helpful when we made the reservation. We can't wait to return!
Located at the mouth of the Russian River, the small town of Jenner is an excellent place to get away from it all, while still enjoying proximity to Sonoma County attractions. Goat Rock beach is only minutes away and is an excellent place to walk and view coastal wildlife. Drive along Highway 1 for dramatic views and visit dozens of other unique beaches or see historical Fort Ross State Park. The bustling community of Bodega Bay is about 15 minutes south and offers a wealth of coastal tourist activities like fishing, golfing, surfing, whale watching, restaurants, and much more. About 10 minutes inland, you'll find the quaint village of Duncan's Mills, which hosts fun summer weekend events like civil war days, a rodeo, and an arts festival. Drive 20 minutes further and reach the larger community of Guerneville, home of the must-see towering redwood trees in Armstrong's Woods. Here you can also experience weekend concert events featuring A-list Jazz and Blues musicians each summer.
