SUNSHINE BEACH COTTAGE: Sleeps 5 people comfortably, 2-bdrm house plus 1-small 'bunk house' with 1 full bath. Just a short stroll to the unique Village of Capitola and the large sandy Beach. Renovated in the vintage 1950's style, this house is charmingly furnished with light and lovely details. The fenced-in back yard has two small brick patios and a grassy lawn area that is great for pets and kids to play on.
Enjoy the 40' flat screen TV in the living room with satellite TV reception and a DVD player. The fireplace provides comfort and ambiance on chilly days. There is a dining room next to the full kitchen with a gas range and oven. The kitchen is fully equipped with dishes, cookware and utensils.
The two bedrooms are comfortably appointed with Queen sized beds and furnished in lovely cottage decor. The bathroom is clean and bright. Linens and towels are provided. A high quality, full sized inner spring sleeper sofa provides extra sleeping room for two in the main living area.
The fun little detached cottage in the back yard (called the 'bunk house') has twin bunk beds and provides a wonderful retreat for the kids. A second little cottage in the back contains a washer & dryer and two bicycles you can use to ride about town.
The house features secured wireless internet so you can keep in touch with the world if you wish. Better still, come to this peaceful cottage for some R&R and leave your cares behind.
This is the perfect place for a family beach getaway, a romantic retreat, or a fun girl's weekend.
Please refer to the Notes section of the Rates information for additional information. Minimum stays are higher for holidays and during the summer months and a nightly pet fee may apply.
We had a wonderful time at Sunshine Beach Cottage during our vacation. Seven days without a hint of fog the whole time.
The bunkhouse worked very well for us. It’s small but comfortable. Your location is perfect. The house is close to the beaches we love. We hiked at Land of Medicine Buddha twice. I would recommend that to your guests.
Having the family dog join us was fun.
We'll be back.
My family enjoyed our stay in this sweet little cottage. However, having limited mobility and walk with a cane, I would say this cottage is not really "handicapped accessible". The tub in the bathroom needs some grab bars and non-slip stickers in the bottom of the tub. A chair in the tub would also be a big help. The heavy, thick towels were a great addition. The enclosed backyard was great for my doggie and 5 year old grandson.
Our family needed a perfect getaway and this cottage fit the bill. Walk to the village with a stroller was easy and it was only a block from Gayle's. I highly recommend for this price range.
we just returned home from our stay in sunshine cottage and were still talking about it.It was our second time renting here and we enjoyed it immensely both visits. Charming , has everything you need for an amazing stay. Clean , bright, beautifully furnished, only disappointment was one of the bikes had a flat tire so we were unable to enjoy that feature. Would we return??? YES
We truly enjoyed our time at the Sunshine Cottage. The bed was very comfortable and fresh. The house was carefully cleaned and had everything we needed. I loved using the gas stove to cook since we have an electric one at home. The fireplace made the living room super cozy while watching a movie. Great Location if you don't want to drive everywhere. We walked to Gayles for a take out lunch. Yumm. The produce stand just a 2 minute walk away the was great for fresh fruit, and avocados! We rode the bikes into the village to hang out at the beach, and watched the pelicans from the wharf. The weather was great. After reading the review about the mold I was a bit concerned because I have terrible allergies, but I had zero reaction to the house :) I am super sensitive so I can say if it would happen to anyone it would happen to me! Overall a perfect quick getaway for us, in a sweet cozy cottage.
This cottage was cute, clean and really close to Capitola Village (a 5 minute walk). It was great to have SPACE -- much more room than a hotel! I felt at ease as soon as I walked in the door. The place was spotless and well maintained. The back yard provided a wonderful place to relax and have breakfast or a beverage. We had a great time and will be going back.
I'm giving this house two stars based on the location, but it has a serious mold problem. We noticed it first in the bathroom, and it wasn't until a guest visited us and pointed out all the mold in other rooms that we realized how bad it was. We thought it was dirt in the window sills and on curtains, but it turned out mold was in every room of the house. I addressed it with propery management as we decided not to extend our stay and here is the reply:

Fyi, an $11/day increase in rent prevented these guests from staying an extra two weeks. Just one data point about competitiveness and market sensitivity to price increases in Capitola. As a heads up, I am going to need to have someone out to survey this mold situation. We had a big problem with this last year. This year, I made sure the sprinkler system was turned off so there wouldn't be additional moisture, but apparently it is very noticeable and needs to be addressed in some manner. I'll share a bid once I receive one."
They later claimed the note was referring to a different property, yeah right! Also said it would be investigated after our departure and when I asked to see the mold report, not surprisingly, they declined.
My husband and I were both at Urgent care less than 2 weeks after staying at this house and were never 100% during our stay and I believe it's due to the mold. It was damp the entire time and we originally thought it was due to rain our first week there. I also don't know why they call it Sunshine Cottage, as the front of the house gets no sun at all. It also has no blinds on the kitchen/dining room windows resulting in little privacy, especially at night since neighbors can look right into this area. There are other great rentals in the area, as we are now locals.
We also had issues with broken door lock, previous guest's dirty laundry, lights burnt out in every room and a remote control that took over a week to get fixed! I don't recommend this property.
Capitola is perfectly situated for recreation within convenient driving distance from many attractions: 15 minutes to the Santa Cruz beach boardwalk and wharf, 30 minutes to Big Basin state park with giant redwoods, 30 minutes to Santa Cruz mountain wineries, 40 minutes to Carmel by the Sea and Monterey, 90 minute drive to San Francisco, 2.5 hour drive to Napa's wine country.
