As you walk down our secluded fern lined path, enjoy the sounds of the rainforest that surrounds you. Our tucked away cottage is family owned and operated. We have preserved the beautiful natural landscaping and take personal pride in making sure you have a wonderful stay. The cottage sits alone on a half acre of lush forest and truly is a hideaway. Fern Tree Hideaway is only 2 minutes from the Volcano Village and 4 minutes from the national park. Decorated with all original art, our cottage is very cheery and for those who really want to feel 'miles' away from everything. Fern Tree Hideaway has been in our family many years. We love nature, art, music and travel and hope this is reflected in our cottage!

Decorated with original art by local artists and filled with charm and warmth, we know your every need will be met. Enjoy cooking in our spacious, fully equipped Bistro style kitchen, or order in and go straight for the jacuzzi bathtub in its own private bathhouse. Watch a movie while cuddled up in the comfortable living room. Enjoy a peaceful nights sleep in our super cozy beds. In the morning awake to the sounds of the local birds as they play in the surrounding fern forest. Have your coffee on one of our three ‘lanais’ (decks) while you decide on which adventure to do for the day.

Our cottage lends itself to anyone looking for a truly peaceful, relaxing getaway. Whether its finishing that novel, sketching, playing guitar in the morning sun, enjoying the sounds of the forest with a glass of wine, or simply doing nothing, our cottage is definitely for you!

We are located only one mile from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, the world famous heritage site. In about three minutes you can be enjoying one of our many charming restaurants, shops or art galleries. Volcano has so many beautiful hikes to choose from along with exploring lava tubes or catching a round of golf.

The Old Town of Hilo with its Historic bay front and glorious parks and waterfalls is a short thirty minute drive North of Volcano. Thirty minutes in the opposite direction heading South of Volcano is one of the Big Island of Hawaii's best beaches, Punalu'u Black sand beach. It is known for green sea turtles and incomparable beauty.

There is no where else you will find a community as charming and creative as Volcano Village. There is a feeling here like none other. It is filled with a mix of musicians, artists, writers and much more. A great way to see and feel the aloha spirit of Volcano Village is by mingling with the locals themselves at the local farmers market held every Sunday morning. Be sure not to miss Volcano Winery and golf course, only 5 minutes away. And of course you have to check out Volcanoes National Park.

About Kristen Dennis

Our family has lived in Hawaii for over 20 years. We love the Ocean(We own a kayak company in Kona on the East side) and we love traveling.Currently we all live in the Puna district and are enjoying our small family farm.Currently we have chickens, cows,South down baby doll sheep ,cats, dogs and much more to come.

When the weather is good we love swimming, gardening or painting.

Why Kristen Dennis chose Volcano

Volcano has got to be one of the most beautiful places in the world. Our family used to live in Kailua Kona and loved coming to Volcano to escape the heat.So eventually we decided to buy a family home that we could use for weekends and such.We did not use it as often as we should have so decided to share it with everyone and make it a vacation rental.

What makes this house unique

When staying at our house we love having a big family dinner. The kitchen has plenty of room for prepping and the bar top is perfect for visiting while guest drink wine.During the Summer months we eat outside and during the winter we eat in the dining room and follow dinner with a good hand of cards and then maybe a movie.

A special treat is filling the bathhouse with candles and enjoying a long hot soak at the end of an activity filled day.

With so many windows looking out into the forest we always see plenty of rare Hawaiian birds.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We just wanted to express how much we all enjoyed staying at the Fern Tree Hideaway! It's such a beautiful jewel tucked away in the lush fern and ohia forest...we didn't want to leave! Thank you for making the transaction feel safe and secure, and for keeping the cottage in such a clean and well-maintained condition. We will definitely be referring others to your lovely hideaway, and will be back in the near future!

Thanks again,

Loved It!

  • 5 of 5

I've stayed in a lot of VRBOs and the Ferntree Hideaway is definitely one of my favorites. The house has so much character! I loved the railing, the walkway to the bath-house, the skylights, and all the big windows looking out to the jungle. The fresh flowers were such a nice touch. It was a great location close to the park entrance. I will absolutely stay here next time I go to the big island.

Fern Tree Jungle!

  • 5 of 5

It was great. Ferns are two stories tall all around the house. The power went off to the neighborhood for about 10 minutes, and the house was ready; matches, candles, flashlights. We loved it.

This place is wonderful

  • 5 of 5

We were 2 couples travelling from Australia and we stayed 2 nights at Ferntree Hideaway. We loved everything about the cottage but especially how it is tucked away in the rainforest. Showering looking at the rainforest was lovely. The house is so well stocked with everything you could possibly need. While we were there one of us celebrated a significant birthday and we had brought champagne with us for the celebration. We were very impressed to find that the house even had crystal champagne glasses. It really is a magical place to stay and we only wish we could have stayed longer.

Great Property!

  • 5 of 5

This house has so much character to it! We enjoyed every aspect of our stay including the professional quality kitchen, outdoor bath, and multiple decks nestled within the ferns. The property was well kept and clean with ample blankets and linens. For those looking to visit Volcano National Park, this house is only 5 minutes drive from the entrance. Also, rest assured the property is well signed and easy to access off a quiet and well paved street. A++ Experience!

What a perfect place to stay... close to the park and just outside the town. We echo other reviewers when we say that this is 100% the best place we have ever stayed at, and we travel quite a bit using VRBO. To say the house is gorgeous is an understatement. You're getting an amazing experience when you stay here, from the fresh fruit, jug of water, and coffee/hot cocoa/popcorn laid out to the incredible feeling of showering within inches of the jungle. The pictures don't do the design and decor justice... you're going to love it. Thank you very much for a one-of-a-kind experience!

Exceptionally great home

  • 5 of 5

FernTree is hands down the best place I've ever rented. I absolutely love it! I stayed here for several nights in August 2014, and then again in June of this year (2015). Both times, the other guests and myself were in awe of the gorgeous, secluded rainforest surroundings, and the peaceful feeling of the large windows, dripping rain, and birdsong. The house was always pleasantly cool, all of the furnishings were super comfortable, and there were plenty of extra blankets, sheets, towels, etc. I stayed once in each bedroom, and they were both awesome. Waking up to sun shining through the fern forest is just so lovely. The kitchen is well-equipped, and there's even a bbq on the porch. The owner is very sweet and accommodating, and there are little notes left all around the house explaining how to use things or where things are. Quite useful! The bathroom detached from the house is fun, too. The only downside is that the water has to be filtered and even then doesn't taste great. But who cares! Just buy a couple jugs on your way in from Hilo or Kona and you'll be fine. Plus, this place is super close to the national park, where you can fill up your bottles for free. As a volcanologist living on Oahu, I've always loved Volcano, but this house just gives it a whole new dimension of awesome. It's peaceful and relaxing on more than just a superficial level. Refreshing for the soul. You should definitely stay here! long as I haven't booked it already ;)
