Lovely bright space in centre of city
Wonderful stay in Leiden at Sabine’s place. When we first arrived, we thought it needed some warming touches to make it more ‘gezellig’ but the bright big windows that let in the afternoon sun, the beautiful furniture pieces, the roomy bedrooms, all quietly won us over. The beds were so comfortable and the kitchen well appointed. It was quiet at night - no noise from neighbours. Very good coffee and a coffee maker were there and were appreciated! A good grocery store was just around the corner, and lots of stores just down the pedestrian-only street that the apartment is on. We rented bikes from the rental place a block away and thoroughly enjoyed our days in this beautiful city. Sabine was there at checkin and a gracious host. Thank you for sharing your space with us! This was our favourite stop on our trip!
Perfect Location and Spacious Apartment
Sabine was the perfect hostess! She accommodated our early arrival by letting us drop our luggage off and even arrive early. Sabine walked us in detail through everything and the town of Leiden itself. The apartment is in an excellent location to really see and do all that Leiden has to offer (which is a lot). We fell in love with the town and the apartment and would absolutely come back and stay again. 3 of us stayed and there was more than enough space. For Europe it was quite large. Miss it already!!!
Nice location, needs updating
Great location in center of Leiden, close to stores including an Albert Heijn. Apartment needs updating, definitely on shower and lighting. Dishwasher does not work well and leaves cups and silverware dirty (had to wash all by hand on arrival). Short turn around time requires the leaving guest to start the laundry of towels and throw out all garbage.
Home away from home
This apartment has old world charm that grew on me, and by the end of my 5 night stay, I was quite thinking of it as my home and it was a bit difficult to leave. But first I had to get over the fact that it is not nearly as glamorous as it appears in the pictures. In fact, it has a rental apartment feel to it. But as I said, it grew on me. Slowly I noticed the stained glass on the windows, the big lantern providing street light, and appreciated the spaciousness of the place (so much more than a hotel) and the large windows that can be flung open on a sunny afternoon, Another bonus is that the owners are in the bed business. Perhaps it was power of suggestion, but I found the bed to be super-comfortable.
The apartment is in a central location, and even though not located on a canal, you need go no further than the end of the street to find a restaurant with an outdoor patio overlooking one. There is a supermarket around the corner and everything is within a 20 minute walking distance.
Some drawbacks: the apartment is not suitable for those with mobility issues, and some parents may worry about small children negotiating the two spiral staircases. The lack of toilet on the bedroom level will bother some. The shower "lip" is not high enough and the bathroom flooded every time i took a shower. The heat appeared not be working, and the TV stopped working after the first couple of days. These did not bother me, so I did not call the owners about it. The one problem I did contact them about, they were very responsive and came over immediately to fix it.
At first I was surprised that the guests are expected to take out the garbage, run the dishwasher and start the laundry before they leave. But after reading around the owner-guest tensions that can occur, I realized it is better to have these expectations clearly laid out. The cleaning fee is not very high, and in the end I was glad to do my part.
Overall, I recommend this place.
Sabine was wonderful and accomindating. Highly recommend to anyone wanting a great experience.
Loved the property! Only problem is the bedrooms are on the third floor and the bathroom is on the second. Not a big deal unless you have need of using the facilities during the night. Loved the location as well as the value!
Lovely apartment close to everything
This is a really nice spacious apartment very near everything worth seeing and doing in this amazing city. Sabine is a gracious host.
Leiden is a beautiful university city with a rich history. The city is known as the birthplace of a number of painters from the Golden Age, such as Lucas van Leyden, Rembrandt, Jan Steen, Jan van Goyen and Frans van Mieris. In addition to the well-known University Library, Leiden also has more research institutes, such as the Hortus Botanicus and the Museum of Ethnology.
Einstein taught at the university for a short period, Thorbecke wrote parts of the Dutch constitution here and the Pilgrims lived here before they stepped on the Mayflower and left for America. Leiden is relatively small, with 120,000 inhabitants. It is big enough to take a long walk or bike ride, but small enough to meet a friend.
Some of my favorite places in Leiden:
The castle of Leiden: where the people of Leiden came together in times of need from the 11th century. Gives a fantastic view of Leiden.
Hortus botanicus Leiden: the oldest botanical garden in the Netherlands and one of the oldest in the world.
Markets: 900 years of tradition in Leiden on the Wednesday and Saturday in the center.
City walk: with a guide or even with a purchased booklet.
Sailing in the canals: a very relaxed way to see Leiden from a different point of view.
Courtyards: Most courtyards were built in the 16th and 17th century and almost all worth a visit.
Museum Naturalis: the fantastic natural history museum is the workplace of Freek Vonk.
Molen de Valk Museum: The seven floors are all open to the public.
Corpus: Museum about the human body.
Het Klaverblad: The oldest shop in Leiden; a small tea shop opened in 1769.
And outside of Leiden:
Katwijk: the beach is not only perfect for beach weather, but also for a beach walk in spring and autumn.
Farm 't Geertje: a very nice petting zoo, where kids can give a bottle of milk, make a pony ride and pet the animals.
Keukenhof: Perhaps the world's largest flower garden.
