Why The Owner chose Bryson City Area

This rental was built by the owner Thurman Breedlove. It was a labor of love! It is cozy and comfortable and Thurman’s creativity is everywhere from his award winning art work to his custom made furniture.

Guestbook comments from the owner

In my wildest day-dreams of some day owning my own "cabin in the woods" did I ever imagine a place as wonderful as this! The craftsmanship and the attention to detail are astounding.Thurman is an artist with the eye of an architect and the heart of a wood-crafter & painter. In short, Poplar Lodge is PERFECT. We enjoyed the remoteness of the cabin, the privacy, the "home feel, but also how close it was to Bryson City, Sylva and even to Dollywood where we drove to twice.

My family of five returned this evening from a spring break getaway to Bryson City. The Poplar Lodge looked very nice on the internet, but we were blown away by just how beautiful and comfortable it is in person. The customer service upon our arrival was outstanding; I got a real sense that this is so much more than just a business to the family. My three children, ages 10, 8 and 7, are already planning our next spring break trip to the cabin!

Great stay

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I recently stayed at Poplar Lodge this past weekend for our 14 year anniversary. We had an amazing time. Ginger was very helpful from making the reservation to getting to the cabin. We had a little trouble getting to the cabin, but Ginger stayed on the phone until we found it. Once we found it...the directions were right on cue....not sure how we had trouble! The craftsmanship and detail in the cabin was amazing. The hot tub was warm and waiting for our arrival. Bryson City is a charming town and we loved walking through the downtown area and visiting all the shops. The town was so friendly!! We will be back and hopefully sooner rather than later!

Great rafting get-a-way

  • 5 of 5

We arrived into the area LATE Friday evening and got turned around on our GPS. I hated to call the rental agent because of the late hour, but I did and guess what SHE ANSWERED!! She even offered to meet me in town at 11:30 at night and personally take me to the cabin. Talk about customer service. (Note:once I put in the correct address we arrived NO problem!) We stayed with our 4 kids in the cabin and felt right at home. The cabin was very clean on arrival and the hot tub was ready and waiting for us after a long drive. The kids enjoyed the pool table and corn hole boards. There is a nice little outside fire pit area and plenty of wood on hand. It was only about 10 minutes to the NOC area and about 15 minutes to the tubing river. BONUS*** with 4 kids...their was a laundry room!!! I would recommend this to friends and family.

enjoyed our stay

  • 5 of 5

Our family enjoyed our stay at Poplar Lodge. The owner's were helpful and have made the house very comfortable. The house had plenty of space for our family of four, and we enjoyed the porch with the hot tub. We spent time at Deep Creek, downtown Bryson City, Cherokee and took the train ride. I would recommend this cabin.

Amazing place

  • 5 of 5

I was shocked by the bad review of this place, because we were here November 2012 and thought the places was amazing! The owners were very helpful, the place is gorgeous inside and we had everything we needed.

I would come back again and recommend it to my friends and family.

Owner's Response: I was shocked as well! I never got the first complaint from them until I read it on here. But, I guess one complaint is not bad out of 4 years. We do try really hard to make sure everyone has a great stay at our cabins. Anyway, thanks so much for your review. Check out our off season specials. We look forward to seeing you again!!

Nice but not as described

  • 2 of 5

Let me start off by saying that this is a nice house, nice area, and the rental company was pleasant to work with. There were a lot of things from the pictures and description that are misleading that I feel everyone should be aware of though. This is NOT a log cabin as stated. It is a HOUSE with wood planks. It is drywall with planks nailed to it spaced about 6 inches apart so you see plank, drywall, plank, etc. It is NOT luxury. It is nice, but a lot imitations used. Plastic counters and table top made to look like granite, particle board used for bathroom wall, etc. Most important to me was the boasting of 18 acres and the picture of the porch view. I assumed that meant it was private and looked as if there was a big, cleared yard in front. We chose this place 100% for the privacy and land I thought we were getting. I have a 100lb stranger aggressive dog that likes to run off leash. What looked to be cleared land in the pic is completely overgrown with trees and brush that would have taken years to grow. There is another house slightly higher than you. We could see everything going on at night, so I assume they could see into ours and there are no living room curtains to close. My dog had a run in with the neighboring renter going for a walk past our house. There were also a lot of problems during our 5 day stay. If you plan on cooking you need to bring some cookware. We had to go buy a pan because the 2 that were there are old and scratched up and can't use them without losing half your meal due to sticking. No cookie sheet either. DVD player never played a whole movie. We attempted to watch 3 movies, all straight out of the packaging and would mess up halfway through. We never finished a single one. The pool/ping pong table is not inside. It is outside. It is completely useless during our winter stay. The grill ran out of gas in the middle of cooking pork chops our last night. We had only used it 1 time for 2 steaks before that. Upon check in, we were told there was a full load in dishwasher that didn't get put away. We had to do it and rewash a lot of them. The gas fireplace is on a max 20min timer. It was a pain for a romantic evening. I've never had a problem or written a bad review for any VRBO we've stayed at, but there were too many things to ignore this time.

Owner's Response: I hate that you did not enjoy your stay at Poplar Lodge! We are a family owned and operated business, and feel we extend ourselves above and beyond to ensure our guests are pleased. We can only do this if we are directly notified of a problem. After reading your review I felt the need to contact you and address some of your comments I'm only allowed so many words in this response so let me be brief. This cabin was built with log slats and Perma-Chink NOT sheet rock. Web site advertises "custom- made counter tops and table. Never mentions granite. They are not plastic! They are Concrete. The cabin does sit on 18 acres of privately owned property. The pictures that are on web site were taken directly on-site at the property, they were not edited or photo shopped. I can see where the place looks different in the winter as compared to the spring when the pictures were taken. I think you might have missed looking in the drawer under the stove because that's where the cookie sheets were along with other skillets. But, we did replace some of the cookware. "DVD player never playing a whole movie" I have no way of knowing it doesn't work unless it's reported. I wish you would have called the office I would have brought you a new player out and you could have enjoyed your movies. "Ping-pong table out side" VRBO website states "Take the opportunity to enjoy some family time playing billiards, air hockey or ping pong or grilling out on the deck" "Grill ran out of gas" the grill has a full tank at check in. I'm not sure if the tank leaked or if the valve was left on, or exactly what happen but there again if you would have called the office I would have made sure you had a functioning gas grill. "Loaded dishwasher" I remember discussing with you check in time being 4:00pm, and you expressing you would like a early check in as possible, so my intention was to get the cabin ready as soon as possible to accommodate your request. That's the reason I didn't wait to for dish washer to finish cycling and unload it. This was discussed at check in and your exact words were " Oh don't worry about it Thank you for getting us in early! I try very hard to answer all questions asked and give as much information and detail about the property as possible prior to reserving. The first time I get any notification of your unhappiness was when I log into my VRBO account a week after your stay. If you would have contacted me I could have addressed your complaints. Best Wishes Ginger
