Knoops Cottage at Le Moulin de Samaran - a country watermill.

Bedrooms 2
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

Early in 1814, en route to the Battle of Toulouse, Wellington's army marched along the Save Valley following what is now the D17. At that time they would have passed the recently built Moulin de Samaran. After a century and a bit of grinding wheat into flour. the Moulin was substantially re-built during the 1990s when it was converted into gites.

Knoops Cottage is situated at the rear of the main mill building and has its own private entrance, terrace and small woodland garden. The front door opens into the main reception room and galley kitchen. An open-plan staircase leads to a galleried landing, off which are one double bedroom and one twin-bedded room, together with a family bathroom with separate shower cabinet.

Whether sitting on the terrace dining “al fresco” on the wonderful warm evenings or sitting around the log fire on the chillier evenings of early Spring or late Autumn, the cottage has everything needed to relax.

There is a small selection of books in the bookcase but a larger selection, together with games and jigsaws are available. In addition there is a large library of DVDs and CDs.

Recommendations for both walking and driving tours, together with maps are also available.

On the western bank of the River Save, the grounds extend over some 14 acres comprising a small formal garden, lawned areas and meadow. Overlooking the river is the large sun terrace with additional barbecues, together with the poolhouse which contains the plunge pool, sauna and for the energetic, some exercise equipment.

Lovely setting and accommodation

  • 5 of 5

Knoops Cottage was a great place to spend a couple of weeks. The owners, Sue and Graham, who live onsite are lovely and very helpful - we were greeted with freshly baked bread and a homemade lemon drizzle cake! They'd also stocked the fridge with a bottle of wine, milk, butter and sparkling water.

The setting is beautiful and very tranquil (once you get used to the constant roar of the mill race in the background!). The property has extensive grounds that you are free to explore. The meadow is perfect for kids to let off steam and the bench and deckchairs by the river are perfect for the grown-ups to sit and watch the world go by. I've never seen so many dragonflies and butterflies in one place, and we also saw red squirrels, coypu swimming in the river and a wide variety of bird life. The owners also have a number of cats but they mostly ignore the visitors and aren't allowed in the guest accommodation.

The cottage itself was spacious, comfortable and well appointed. It backs onto the main mill building but has its own entrance (be aware that the master bedroom is above the owner's living room so you can sometimes hear their TV from there). It was also very well equipped compared to other places we've stayed: there was even olive oil, salt and pepper in the kitchen, as well as dishwasher tablets, kitchen roll and washing up liquid. In fact, the only household items we ended up buying were a box of tissues and a roll of cling film.

The location is a great base for exploring the area - we visited the Cite de l'Espace in Toulouse (highly recommended and multi-lingual) and took a couple of trips into the Pyrenees as well as exploring the local towns and villages. We also took a day trip out to the beautiful medieval city of Carcassonne but this was a couple of hours drive.

The only downside of the location was that there isn't a shop or restaurant in walking distance which we did miss a bit as we've always previously been somewhere we can take a stroll to get fresh baguette and croissants each morning.

The one negative of the property is the pool - it's indoor and unheated, so it was freezing. Our 8 year old braved it a couple of times but didn't stay in long and needed a warm bath afterwards! However, there is a wonderful municipal outdoor pool in the nearby town (less that 10 mins drive) that cost us 8 Euros for the 3 of us. However, if an onsite pool is important to you, this probably isn't the property for you.

Overall, highly recommended!

Pictures tell a thousand words

  • 5 of 5

How often is it that photos of your holiday destination don't quite match up to the real thing? Well with this gem you get what you see! Snoops cottage was spacious, cool during the night-time and had everything you would want laid on. Such a pretty setting too with many bucolic little nooks and crannies to explore in amongst acres and acres of gardens and walks. On arrival we were delighted to receive some home made provisions and 'fridge' essentials on arrival! Our hosts were so helpful and knowledgeable about the local area too, but be warned, if you are the unlucky ones you will be pulled into their web and forced to drink very quaffable local wines of an evening until you beg to be allowed leave to go to bed. Sounds great but I for one wasted the following day recovering. Honestly? Just delightful.

The perfect place to unwind and relax

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned home after spending a week at Knoops Cottage. It is in a peaceful, blissful setting, surrounded by leafy shade with delightful wildlife to sit and observe.

Making the booking and any correspondence with the Owners prior to booking was first-rate, which made the process very smooth and easy.

Susan and Graham are the friendliest of hosts, who will be as unobtrusive as you want them to be, but always available if you would like any advice or information.

The Cottage really is a home from home and is well equipped. All of the rooms are spacious and comfortable. There is even a large private terrace and garden which is ideal for multi-tasking by sitting with a glass of wine whilst reading a book as the BBQ cooks!

Le Moulin de Samaran is only an hour from Toulouse airport in the heart of the French countryside. It is ideally placed to explore the surrounding villages and towns with excellent, reasonably priced, places to eat nearby. The local markets are great to visit, especially Samatan which has exceptional local produce and something for everyone.

We would not hesitate in recommending this property and hope to return again next year.
