Family-friendly, bright and cozy traditional Japanese house up to 5 people

Bedrooms 2
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

Located on a quiet lane leading up to the Chawan-zaka approach to Kiyomizu Temple (an UNESCO World Heritage site), just minutes from the hustle and bustle of the busy souvenir shops and restaurants lining Ninnen-zaka and Sannen-zaka below the temple’s main gates, this modern machiya-style house was completely reformed and refurbished in 2007.

The interior offers a harmonious combination of Japanese design and beautiful antiques with modern features such as hardwood floors and Iranian gabeh carpets. Downstairs, there is a full kitchen and a dining area with a traditional Japanese "mizuya" cupboard. The dining area opens out on to a deck with a small Japanese garden beneath which flows a small stream from the temple. You can hear the stream, birds and the temple bells ringing.

There is a western-style toilet and a full Japanese-style bath downstairs. The two bedrooms are upstairs and get plenty of light. The large, high ceiling-ed Japanese-style tatami mat bedroom sleeps up to 3 people in single or double futons. Across the hall, the Western bedroom has a queen-sized futon bed.

The neighborhood in the Higashiyama district in which the house is located has been catering to tourists and pilgrims for centuries. Kiyomizu Temple is an especially popular destination for viewing the cherry blossoms and the autumn colors. Visit the numerous shops selling traditional Kiyomizu-yaki pottery as you wander the steep and ancient back lanes paved with stone north to Yasaka Shrine (10 minutes), or Hanamikoji Street (15 minutes), the center of the Gion, where the geisha ply their trade. From Kyoto Station, it’s 15 minutes by bus to the Gojo-zaka bus stop, a short walk from the house. Our modern machiya-style house in Gion-Kiyomizu is perfectly located for enjoying the best the ancient city of Kyoto has to offer.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"Our visit to Kyoto was very successful in every sense, we enjoyed it so much. Much of it was due to your nice house in which we lived for two weeks and felt there like home. We loved the neighborhood and on our last Friday in Kyoto had a long walk through the little alleys of the area. We just loved it and decided that this was the most beautiful area in Kyoto...."

Best location and lovely home!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this lovely home in the Kiyamizu neighbourhood with our family of five and were very comfortable. The sights of old Kyoto are literally at your doorstep. All conveniences, shopping and excellent restaurants are nearby. We will return!

A truly delightful place to stay in Kyoto!

  • 5 of 5

My husband, 13-year old son and I had the pleasure of staying at Acco's place for a second time recently (our last visit was in 2013.) I will gladly keep returning for any future visits...fingers crossed that my dates are always available! Acco is wonderful - so helpful, kind and full of suggestions for events happening in town and nearby restaurants to enjoy. She will provide you with directions on how to get to her place beforehand, as well as arrange to meet you at the taxi stand nearby. She's always just a call away if you have questions or need assistance.

Her machiya-style house is tucked away down a quiet street (but still very close to a taxi stand and bus stops.) You're also only a short walk away from Kiyomizu-dera and nearby shopping. You can even walk to the the new tatami room Starbucks if that's of interest. Her townhouse has a dining room that seats four, a cozy kitchen so you can make some of your own meals, a storage area for luggage, bathroom, sink, Japanese bath and a combo washing machine/dryer. Up a steep but very manageable set of stairs with railings are the two bedrooms - one with a regular bed and the other a tatami room with comfortable futons. Our visit this time was in the hot, humid summer, so we were very thankful to have air conditioning on both levels. We were very comfortable. Plus we appreciated the umbrellas available to borrow for the one downpour we experienced.

I hope you have the opportunity to stay here. We can't wait to return!

Characteristic cozy house in great, quiet location with super nice host

  • 5 of 5

Our stay started with Acco meeting us at the bus stop so she could guide us to the house which was super nice. Upon arrival, she went over everything with us - AC remotes, stove, washer/dryer, etc. She also has a manual that outlines everything. The house was exactly what we were looking for - characteristic, cozy (perfect for the four of us), clean, quiet, and in a great location (two minutes from bus stop). Acco also spent time recommending things to do and places to eat on our map which was really valuable. The house was well stocked with really nice dishes, pots, silverware, and even coffee and other essentials.

We'll definitely stay here again and we loved Kyoto.

Fantastic authentic property in a great location

  • 5 of 5

We loved this property. From the moment we arrived we knew we'd picked the right property. Acco was so helpful and friendly. She gave us a lot of great information, flawless english and was easily contactable if we needed help during the day. We slept in the Japeneze room which was extremely comfortable. We would recommend to anyone staying in Kyoto. Thanks Acco.
