Family-friendly, bright and cozy traditional Japanese house up to 5 people

Bedrooms 2
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

Located on a quiet lane leading up to the Chawan-zaka approach to Kiyomizu Temple (an UNESCO World Heritage site), just minutes from the hustle and bustle of the busy souvenir shops and restaurants lining Ninnen-zaka and Sannen-zaka below the temple’s main gates, this modern machiya-style house was completely reformed and refurbished in 2007.

The interior offers a harmonious combination of Japanese design and beautiful antiques with modern features such as hardwood floors and Iranian gabeh carpets. Downstairs, there is a full kitchen and a dining area with a traditional Japanese "mizuya" cupboard. The dining area opens out on to a deck with a small Japanese garden beneath which flows a small stream from the temple. You can hear the stream, birds and the temple bells ringing.

There is a western-style toilet and a full Japanese-style bath downstairs. The two bedrooms are upstairs and get plenty of light. The large, high ceiling-ed Japanese-style tatami mat bedroom sleeps up to 3 people in single or double futons. Across the hall, the Western bedroom has a queen-sized futon bed.

The neighborhood in the Higashiyama district in which the house is located has been catering to tourists and pilgrims for centuries. Kiyomizu Temple is an especially popular destination for viewing the cherry blossoms and the autumn colors. Visit the numerous shops selling traditional Kiyomizu-yaki pottery as you wander the steep and ancient back lanes paved with stone north to Yasaka Shrine (10 minutes), or Hanamikoji Street (15 minutes), the center of the Gion, where the geisha ply their trade. From Kyoto Station, it’s 15 minutes by bus to the Gojo-zaka bus stop, a short walk from the house. Our modern machiya-style house in Gion-Kiyomizu is perfectly located for enjoying the best the ancient city of Kyoto has to offer.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"Our visit to Kyoto was very successful in every sense, we enjoyed it so much. Much of it was due to your nice house in which we lived for two weeks and felt there like home. We loved the neighborhood and on our last Friday in Kyoto had a long walk through the little alleys of the area. We just loved it and decided that this was the most beautiful area in Kyoto...."

Quaint traditional Japanese house, perfect stay for a small family

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for 4 nights during August as a family of 4, kids aged 9 & 13.

The location is fantastic being walking distance to main cultural spots of interest, places to eat and convenience stores. A taxi rank is just down the road if you want to travel further afield. At the same time its on a quiet road behind the main street with no traffic. Finding the house is no problem if you follow Acco's clear instructions and recommendations. Acco was welcoming and provided plenty of useful information for our stay, excellent polite comms in the run up to our stay, fluently bilingual.

The house is old style with compact amenities, tasteful and quaint furnishings with nice touches. It was very clean throughout. We had a simple meal once in the dining room but didn't cook in the kitchen at all, it had everything we needed though, lots of glasses, enough plates, etc.

Typical for old style Japanese houses, the stairs are very steep which is OK going up, but precarious walking down and you have to be careful. Despite this, I did like languishing in the comfort of the upstairs tatami room with the sofas after a long day on my feet. We were grateful for the ample AC in every room as it was a particularly hot summer. The Japanese modern fitted bathroom was good and nice to use at the end of each day of hard sweating, with a spacious shower area and smart bath controls if you fancy a soak. Plenty of towels to use. We were also thankful to be able to make use of the washing machine.

The toilet room is very compact, so you can't lean forward too far when getting on or off the 'throne' and I'm only 5'5'', but you come across this fairly often in Japan. I would have liked a simple latch to secure the door from the inside, we had to enforce a rule of calling or knocking before entering after a couple of toilet intrusion incidents!

The bed and futon were comfy, though the bedding material was a tad scratchy and our daughter didn't want to use it. It wasn't so much of an issue for us due to it being the height of summer and so not requiring much cover.

My son made good use of the wi-fi for his gaming laptop that he can't be without.

So all in all, this house was good and comfortable enough and we had a pleasant stay. Recommended.

Beautiful house in a perfect location

  • 5 of 5

My husband, daughter and I stayed in Acco’s meticulously kept house. It was perfect in every detail. The kitchen had everything we needed, as we prepared some meals at home. Acco provided recommendations for restaurants in the area which we enjoyed trying out. We used public transportation to get around the city...the bus stop was conveniently down the street. Kyoto is a wonderful place to spend a week, there was plenty to do for the week we visited. If we are lucky enough to visit Kyoto again we would definitely rent Acco’s house again. She was very easy to work with through the whole process and was a warm and thoughtful host!

Japanese lifestyle experience!

  • 5 of 5

By North American standards, this house is small (some would say tiny) but it is very functional and has all the elements that one is looking for when wanting to experience the Japanese lifestyle. Very charming and cosy, clean, well located, just a great place to stay. And the owner, Acco, is wonderful to deal with. I would recommend it anytime!

Second time!

  • 5 of 5

It is our second time to stay at Acco's. The location is wonderful, and the old style house is something so special about this place. Even though it is right by one of the most crowded and popular site, Kiyomizu-dera, in Kyoto, this alley way house provide you with quiet place to rest and relax. If you are lucky, you can enjoy the sound of stream running by the house. Acco is very personal and kind - we were happy to see her again for our visit.

The house is not just clean, but really taken care of to the details. We love the little Japanese garden that we can look at from dining room and little plants and flowers everywhere in the house.

We would definitely visit here again!

Thank you Acco!!

Beautiful home in a great location

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four had a wonderful stay. Acco was very warm, friendly and responsive. She met us at the beginning and end of our stay and was available if we needed anything. The house is on a very quiet street. It is well located and only a few blocks from Kiyomizudera temple — and only about a 20 minute walk to the Gion area. The house itself is incredibly well furnished with everything you could need in the kitchen. We liked the flexibility of having the futons in addition to the western bed. There was plenty of hot water and the room air conditioners worked great when we needed them. The house is small and the stairs are steep, but it is extremely cozy and charming. We would highly recommend staying here. Thank you, Acco, for a delightful stay.

Delightful home with character and a warm host.

  • 5 of 5

We were delighted to stay at Acco’s house. Acco was so helpful and responsive to us from the minute we booked our stay with her. She met us at the house when we arrived and explained Kyoto, the bus system and answered many questions for us. The house itself was spotless and was a charming and spa-like respite from busy Kyoto. A wonderful place for our family of 5 to stay for the three days we had. Highly recommend.
