Overview

About the property

Spacious with 3 beds, 2 bathrooms, sleeps 6 comfortably, huge terrace with shade

A 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom spacious, well-equipped penthouse apartment, easily sleeping 6. Located on a small, secure complex on the edge of Arcos. In the summer the shared pool is open .There is air-con in the living room and bedroom 1 and the car park offers shade and security for your car.

Bedroom 1 has 1 dble bed and spacious wardrobes and drawers.

Beds 2 & 3 each have two twin beds with wardrobes and drawers, providing good hanging and storage. Beds 1 and 2 look out onto the pool.Well-equipped with fridge-freezer, washing machine, dishwasher, electric oven and hob, cutlery, crockery and a wide range utensils. Iron and ironing board. Cleaning equipment and materials.

The two bathrooms are equally equipped with toilet, bidet and bath with shower. Both have a large basin with mirror and shelf. Towel rails provide space for hanging wet towels.

The terrace offers a sanctuary for sunbathing, sipping sherry and eating al fresco. There is a large table with a bench seat and outside chairs for eating and a covered area has been created to provide a shelter from the sun. Sun beds are available.

All bathroom towels and linen are supplied.

The swimming pool is shared and is open from mid June to mid September when the sun warms it and negates the need for heating. The pool is open everyday from midday until around 9.30 pm. (This varies depending on weekends/weekdays and may change from one year to the next.) There is some outdoor furniture and sun loungers for use on the terrace and the latter can be used by the pool too. There is a green area around the pool and the complex has well-tended flower borders that contain some attractive and carefully nurtured Mediterranean shrubs. The outdoor furniture allows for eating outside in the summer months.

There is a lifeguard supervising the pool but young children must be accompanied by an adult.

The apartment is more suitable for older children as it is above ground level and caution must be taken whilst on the terrace and when the windows are open. The terrace has a wall and railing which provide some safety but are not child proof, which is the same for the windows to the bedrooms. It is essential to supervise children sensibly.

The apartment is in easy reach of the many amenities the town has to offer. The centre of town is a 10 minute walk and to visit the surrounding area - lakes, mountains, beaches and cities a car is recommended, though local buses are good and the train can be picked up in Jerez.

Arcos itself is a delightful 'pueblo blanco' with a fascinating old town waiting to be explored. Vibrant tapas bars abound and in the summer months authentic and passionate flamenco can be found in plazas large and small. From Arcos, heading east you can easily access Grazalema and the huge National Park that is a draw for walkers, birdwatchers and, for the more thrill seeking sportsperson - paragliding. Heading west from Arcos you are soon upon the wonderful Costa de la Luz beaches. El Puerto de Santa Maria is the closest, with Cadiz just a step further, both offering excellent facilities and golden sands. Golf is available at the acclaimed, Arcos Gardens - just a putt away!

There is a lift from the underground, secure car park to the apartment and the accommodation is all on one level but there is a step on to the terrace that would make wheelchair access difficult. There are a number of steep hills in Arcos and outside the complex which would make pushing a wheelchair difficult so the use of a car would be essential in this instance.

About Bridget Smedley

I am married and live in the UK with my husband and although our family is grown up now we still have one son living at home. My husband recently retired and is adjusting well to this new situaion. I teach and am able to visit Spain 3 or 4 times a year, both in winter as well as in the summer. We find that there are different things to see and do depending on the season. For example, Easter offers lots to see and usually fine weather, which is very suitable for my mother who enjoys the spring climate (usually sunny days by this time in the year - but without the greater heat of the summer months). October half term has always been a favourite time to visit too, as it is quieter but still warm. I've been on the beach at this time of year and wondered at the lack of people not doing the same!

In both England and Spain we enjoy walking. In Spain we have found some really unexpectedly beautiful and interesting walks not far from our apartment.

Both of us are also learning Spanish which we find, whilst not essential, is useful and the locals appreciate our efforts.

Bridget Smedley purchased this apartment in 2006

Why Bridget Smedley chose Arcos de la Frontera

We decided on this property as we liked Arcos and its situation. It is close to Jerez and Cadiz which are cities that we love to visit. This part of Spain is very much the 'real' Spain and being in Arcos offers a foot into an attractive town that has lots of events and festivals going on year round. Being a town it offers too all the facilities you would expect as well as having a good selection of bars and restaurants to serve both the locals and the visitors who come to see the old town and wander its narrow streets and plazas.

What makes this apartment unique

The location is between coast and mountains, both in easy reach. The apartment is in a small complex and offers a lovely view to the mountains from the kitchen and terrace. Being able to sit and enjoy the long, hot summer evenings on the terrace is one of my favourite passtimes. From the apartment it is walkable to a range of bars and eating places. Tapas is the favoured cuisine, which suits me fine. The quality of some of the places is amazing and not expensive. If you decide to eat in there is a local market close by with some very interesting fresh fish. The markets in Jerez and Cadiz are well worth a visit too. Sea food is in abundance as are fresh fruits and vegetables. There are local wines to taste too, which are really good and, of course, the many sherry bodegas provide lots of finos, amontillados etc. to sample.

It is not long before you take to the many good things this part of Spain has to offer and wonder why you don't come back more often!

Notes:
Please note that children are welcome but there are little facilities for very young children and it is important to supervise your younger children carefully as the apartment is several floors above ground level. If you do not wish to drive when you are visiting then a car to and from Jerez Airport can be arranged locally at a very reasonable cost. The town is walkable in about 10 minutes up the hill outside. Once in Arcos bars, restaurants and shops are reachable by foot. There are a range of restaurants in Arcos itself - with tapas bars and restaurants being the most abundant. They offer excellent cuisine at a very reasonable price. There are big supermarkets close by such as Carrefour and Mercadona but around the corner and in walking distance are some smaller more local supermarkets. There is a local shop that is open late and on Sundays which helps when arriving 'out of hours'. Free Wi-fi is widely available at bars and restaurants locally.

Everything we expected and more

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at Arcos. Apartment was perfect and the pool was very welcome at the heat of the day. Bridget couldn't have been more helpful during the run up to our holiday. Arcos is a beautiful town with stunning views. It is great as a base for lots of places to see in the area. One of our highlights was an off-road buggy experience in Ronda which is a little over an hour away. We loved it. If you are into whitewashed Spanish villages, this is the place to come as you can pretty much get to see them all. Added bonus was a man made beach on the lake about 10 mins drive away and gave you a bit of a change from just the pool. All in all we had a fantastic holiday in a great location.

Immaculate, comfortable and spacious

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Bridget's apartment over the summer with 3 children. The apartment was fabulous. It was spotless throughout, very comfortable and spacious. The pool area especially was lovely and relaxing. The children loved playing there and the community from the apartment complex was extremely welcoming and friendly and it made the atmosphere around the pool really enjoyable. Arcos is also a lovely town to visit and it's easy to travel around to other places from here, such as Cadiz, Tarifa etc. Bridget was also lovely and really helpful. We'd definitely stay here again!

Bridget's apartment is spotless and has an especially nice kitchen. It is well-positioned for exploring nearby towns, and is within walking distance of the heart of Arcos. The shared pool was an added bonus.

Sehr hübsche und saubere Ferienwohnung

  • 5 of 5

perfect appartement

  • 5 of 5

Arcos is a delightful 'pueblo blanco', a fascinating hillside town just waiting for you to explore. Vibrant tapas bars abound among the plazas, large and small, tucked away among the tangle of streets within the ‘old town’.

Situated between the coast and the country, Arcos has on one side superb beaches, on the other amazing mountains and national parkland. To the west are the extensive golden sands of the Costa de la Luz, just a 35 minute drive away. The nearest coastline is at El Puerto de Santa Maria, which is blessed with many delightful bays and beaches. At Cadiz, close by El Puerto, you will discover more incredible stretches of golden sand. From the stunning Playa Victoria beach, you have amazing views of the old town and the famous golden dome of the city’s cathedral. To the north of Cadiz, are the smaller but equally attractive resorts of Rota and Chipiona.

Sanlucar is about 35 miles away from Arcos and is referred to as the northerly tip of the 'Sherry Triangle'. Granada and Cordoba are further away but very accessible using the excellent motorway system serving the area. There is a very good rail service between Jerez and Seville. From Jerez you can get the train to El Puerto and Cadiz. A good bus service operates between Arcos and Jerez, a city well worth a visit in order to experience its myriad of tapas bars, shops, bodegas and charming architecture. Jerez airport is just a 20 minute drive from Arcos. Seville is about 60 miles and an easy day trip. Ryanair and Easyjet fly to Seville from Gatwick and Stansted. Gibraltar is just over an hour’s drive away and Malaga about 2 hours.

From Arcos, heading east you can easily access Grazalema and the huge National Park that is a draw for walkers, birdwatchers and the thrill seeking paraglider. As well as surfing and watersports at the coast and upon the abundant lakes in this area of Andalucia, there are the many golf courses that the region is famous for, including the relatively new but renowned Arcos Gardens, which is just a very short drive from the apartment. A bit further away, but still just a short drive, is the prestigious Montecastillo Golf course toward Jerez.

The extensive golden sands of the Costa de la Luz are a 35 minute drive away. The nearest is arguably at El Puerto where there are many beaches that include long sands and quieter more secluded bays. At Cadiz, which takes a similar time to drive to, there is an incredible stretch of beach with the amazing backdrop of the old town and the golden dome of the cathedral that dominates the skyline. To the north of Cadiz, similarly about a 35 min drive are the attractive resorts of Rota and Chipiona.

Jerez airport is close by and takes about 20 minutes to drive from and to. Seville is just over an hours drive away to the north and Gibraltar is a similiar distance away to the south and takes little more than an hour to get to. Malaga is a bit further and is more like a two hour drive.

For longer holidays and where the aim is to travel and discover tucked away places a car is recommended. In particular, a car is useful and most efficient for accessing the beaches of the Costa de la Luz. Jerez is about 20 miles away and Cadiz a little further, nearer 35 miles from Arcos.

Seville is about 60 miles and an easy day trip. Sanlucar is about 35 miles away and is the northerly tip of the 'Sherry Triangle'. Granada and Cordoba are further away but very accessible using the excellent motorway system serving the area.

There is a very good rail service between Jerez an Seville. From Jerez you can get the train to El Puerto and Cadiz. There is a good bus service between Arcos and Jerez.

Keeping fit has become popular in Arcos and you will see many walkers out in the early morning and late evening when the temperature drops. There are dedicated walking paths as well as less defined ones, which can take you through the old town or round the extensive edges of the lake. Cycling is becoming increasingly popular and Arcos offers many superb routes to pedal. The beaches of the Costa de la Luz are an attraction for the surfer and from Cadiz southwards the Atlantic waves often provide the ideal conditions for the serious and less serious rider of the wave.

Arcos is situated between the coast and the country - on one side the beaches on the other the mountains. The latter offer a range of activities for the walker and birdwatcher. Eagles and various birds of prey are in evidence in Arcos itself and the National Park not far away is an important habitat for many of these magnificent creatures. A beautiful walk not too far from the apartment starts in El Bosque, which is a half hour drive inland.

From here you walk along the river heading toward Benalmahoma. This takes about 1hr 1/2 hours to walk there and the same back. It is worth allowing time to discover the delightful hillside village of Benalmahoma.

Closer to Arcos the lake/reservoir offers opportunities for the walker and cyclist.
