1 bedroom (queen), Loft for kids
About Mary Vogel
I am a professional photographer. I primarily photograph art for the large artist community here; I also do portrait work. I live with my wife Allison. I'm also an avid bicyclist (5000 miles in 2013).
Mary Vogel purchased this Cabin in 2005
Why Mary Vogel chose Bakersville
I live in the front of the property. We placed our cabin out of sight and sound with the intent to use it for family ( I have 10 sibs). In the mean time we thought it would be a great vacation rental as well. This has proven to be true due to the fun and pleasure of meeting people from all over the world. The Appalachian Mountains are unsurpassed in their beauty, peace and quiet. This area is home to the Penland School of Crafts and world renowned artists, challenging road cycling, the Appalachian Trail and Blue Ridge Parkway.
What makes this Cabin unique
We are surrounded by hundreds of acres of conservancy land and the Pisgah National Forest, very green in the summer, snow in the winter. There is a creek that passes directly next to the cabin and a small waterfall outside the bedroom window. The view from the deck is pure rolling green landscape with a small pond (very meditative). Bicyclists bring their road bikes for the challenge and beauty and some come to ride in the 'Roan Moan' century and metric century. Some folks just stay and hang out, never leaving once they get here. The driving routes are gorgeous, the Appalachian Trail and other hiking trails are nearby as well as the Blue Ridge Parkway. Mitchell County has more artists per capita than anywhere in the United States. There are world class galleries in tiny nearby Bakersville. Many artists come here to study at the Penland School of Craft and never leave. Did I mention a farm to table award-winning, chef-owned restaurant and a microbrewery? Knife and Fork and Pizza Shop Dry County Brewing respectively.

Wonderfully Quiet Getaway in the Carolina Mountains
My husband and I could not have been happier staying at Little Bird Cabin. It had everything we needed plus something we didn't realize how much we needed, which was tremendous peace and quiet. The place was spotless and super comfortable. It also had everything required for cooking and grilling. It is a perfect location for Penland and for visiting other craft artists in the area. At the end of each day of art hunting, we would sit on the balcony reading and listening to absolutely nothing! From the bedroom window you can hear the little waterfall behind the cabin. Occasionally you can hear the creek from other spots on the property, and the rain on the roof is a wonderful sound, but that's about it. The rest is complete quiet. The deer came to visit, as did a family of turkeys, but they didn't make any noise. Mary is an attentive host and a delightful person to chat with. We will most certainly return here the next time we come back to the area. Thank you Mary!
Exactly as described.
We loved it! Mary was very helpful with the surrounding area and we really loved feeding the goats. Want to come back again soon. Thanks, Mary!
Great stay in the mountains!
You could not find a more tranquil setting than the Little Bird cabin. Also, you could not deal with a better hostess than Mary. She made sure you were comfortable and had everything you needed. ( Just don’t try to give her garlic!). We saw turkeys and deer and enjoyed petting and feeding the 3 resident goats. We left our bedroom window open so we could hear the cascading stream beside the cabin. A great getaway!
Cute and relaxing
The cabin was very nice and quiet, which is exactly what we were looking for at the getaway place! The sound of the creek at night, the viewing of deer in the clearing and the Beautiful area in which the cabin was located was perfect! Our days there were wonderful!
Great host and stay
If you want a property owner who cares about her guests, stay here. If you want comfort, great coffee, nice clean cozy digs and fresh air, stay here. Thanks Mary! We appreciated your parking and taxi service.
My pleasure! Really nice talking to you both!
