Betty was a very gracious and helpful host. The property's front side is terrific, about 75 yards from the beach via an easy walk; the back side closely abuts highway 101 and a railroad track. The home is small but adequate and clean. My main complaint is that it is vastly over-priced for what you get. The beds in 2 of 3 rooms were old and a bit saggy and creaky. The kitchen appliances are old and the absence of a garbage disposal is noteworthy at this price. There were lots of games for the kids. The Rockaway beach is spacious and great walking and free of vehicles driving around, as often occurs on other beaches.
I looked at a ton of rentals before I chose Anchors Away. Some pictures look as if you can walk right onto the beach, but many homes have drop offs where you have to go down the road to enter the beach, I did not want that. When I inquired about this rental all of my questions were answered and they were extremely nice in all of their correspondence. I was looking for a description of the property that met the experience I wanted to have. This did just that.
The customer service was outstanding! They made payment easy and the deposit was refunded promptly after our check-out. We happened to be coming in from Portland when storm warnings were going on and they even texted me to let me know that the roads were all open getting to the property. They sent me directions traveling from Portland to Rockaway beach. I loved that! They were very caring; it was customer service that is rare now-a-days and it was much appreciated.
This house has ocean views if your are sitting on the sofa, eating at the dining table, in the front bedroom downstairs and from the upstairs bedroom. We chose the upstairs bedroom to sleep in. I loved the higher bed, that is what I have at home. Plenty of blankets, cozy bed! When lying in this bed you can look straight out the wall of windows.. all beach and ocean...that is a million dollar view! The whole house was cozy.
Out the back door you have a small yard and then there is a trail that goes through the greenery...then the beach is right there, perfect! We walked the beach both ways and I will have to say that Anchors Away has the BEST location on the stretch of beach in both directions. I would rent here again and I have been raving to friends and family already.
Our stay was during an October storm front. It was cold and rainy, but being from the desert we welcomed this crazy weather. We got to experience the 57-80mph winds on the beach which was talked about on The Weather Channel on FB. We got to experience a beach sunset, WOW! The low tide on this beach retracts pretty far out right behind this house. Further to the right of this house the ocean does not retract as far, therefore the high tide covers their beaches sooner. The giant driftwood trees are beautiful and display themselves right behind this house. Gorgeous! If they had a place to post pics here I would. We saw 2 eagles in one day. and one landed on the beach and ate breakfast.
They even had a blow dryer. Plus, I washed all of our clothes before we left!
Great property right on the beach. Everything you need to have a wonderful time. Owner also easy to get a hold of for anything and has a handyman. Nearby if needed. Downsides, over priced, they kept most of my large security deposit even though we left the place VERY VERY clean. Also got blamed for the pilot light going out even though we never used the fireplace in the living room.
Our family came together from across the US for a get together, and found the beach house to be perfect. Very roomy bedrooms, wonderful beach. We walked morning and night along miles of hard, sandy beach. The arrangements with the owner worked great and she was very prompt with inquiries. I highly recommend it.
The house with the "red door" was the perfect place for our family vacation. This was the first time our whole family traveled together, and the layout of the house was great for us. Our son and his family were able to stay upstairs in the large king bedroom, with the pack n play, while our other son had the train room and we had the seaside bedroom. Everyone had privacy which made for happy people. Also, the kitchen was well stocked with everyday items we were grateful for, a pitcher for juice, coffee maker, dishwasher, etc. Even charcoal/fluid for cooking burgers on the grill! We all loved the backyard, and then the closeness to the actual beach where we spent most of our time, having lucked out weatherwise. We have been to Rockaway many times over the past 20 years, always staying in a hotel/motel. Wow, staying in a house is definetley the way to go! Everything at the house was in nice order. We especially want to thank Mary (cleaner), who found some lost items and sent them on to us, going the extra mile! Wonderful overall service indeed!
When we finally found the location, we were disappointed at the busy tourist treeless neighborhood, but as soon as we got in, it was pure heaven out front. Just what we wanted & why I booked that one. [didn't want power lines in our view]. The views out the windows were wonderful with 3 taller scrub pines & the Twin Rocks beckoning a walk with water inlets. We found a sand dollar right away! It was quite an advantageous location as Ecola Park & Canon Beach were 20 minutes north & the 3 Bay loop the same to the south.
The cottage itself was very casual, but with nice touches & was clean & tidy. Not a fancy place; you open front door to a water heater which was not a happy welcome but all was forgiven as soon as we saw the yard & beach. [on demand hot water is tankless & would be better] I found alot of the furniture too oversized for a small person like me; I had to throw my belly on the bed upstairs to get in it! I couldn't reach shelves w towels etc & there was no step ladder..
A few of the problems I encountered were of my own making. I thought I had read this cottage had "internet available" but perhaps I got mixed up w one of the other 1000 listings. so I was shocked & v disappointed when there was no wifi. [I don't use a smart phone] also I had difficulty w the lock box; having no experience with them before & it should be stressed that in all the info you copy, the only time you will receive the lock box code is when Betty calls you. You can't refer back to all the online info provided. So that sent me into a panic at the front door & I had to go to the library & try to get on line, only to realize it wasn't in all the emailed info.
I had asked if there was traffic noise being so close to that main route & was told there was a tourist train that went by several times daily. I did find the tractor trailers going by at night noticeable but not obnoxious; perhaps it was because it was low tide & we couldn't hear the waves.
All in all it was a satisfying choice & perhaps we would rent it again.. but I think next time I will chose a town where I might be lured to dine out rather than drive thru & chose a cottage that was a just a little more upscale in decor & amenities. but for a busy family esp a pet, it would be perfect.
Betty could not have been nicer & we are just 2 sisters from Maine on the trip of a lifetime so we wanted it all in one.
But as far as the beach & rocks & front yard & cozy beds & wonderful shower; it was great !
