The swifts are performing their aerobatics over the piazza, the cafes are alive with people enjoying the spring sunshine and flowers are everywhere. This is the most magical time to be in Tuscany and witness more shades of green than you can imagine.
The scene from our windows on the piazza changes with the seasons and never fails to charm. Here you are in the heart of a small Tuscan town and you can observe the daily habits of its inhabitants and participate in the pleasant rituals and routines that make life here so delightful and relaxing. No need for a car to arrive at two of the best restaurants in the area, which are a stroll across the piazza and visible from our windows.
There is always life in the piazza any time of year. You will enjoy observing the daily routine of the Cetonesi as they go about their lives. Linger over a cappuccino in the piazza or enjoy a glass of wine at Nilo's, where trays of delicious nibbles accompany a drink order. This is our definition of happy hour!
At the Saturday morning market in the piazza you will marvel at the abundance of produce for sale. Not to mention the local cheeses, the hand sliced gourmet prosciutto and the giant 'porchetta'. Great between slabs of local bread. Did I mention the bakery downstairs? The scent of fresh bread greets you every morning. Nip down for their delicious whole wheat croissants filled with apricot jam and bring them upstairs for breakfast.
The location of our apartment lets you participate in every day life, not just see it from a tourist's point of view. We have a front row view with five windows on the main piazza of Cetona, which has been called one of the most beautiful medieval towns of Tuscany and featured in 'The Most Beautiful Villages of Tuscany'.
Here, everything you need is on your doorstep: restaurants, cafes, markets, grocery stores selling local delicacies. Pizzas, pasta dishes and a selection of local wines and craft beers are available at our downstairs cafe.
Read our reviews and you will see how much our guests enjoy living in a small town where the rhythms of life don't seem to have changed and tourists are few. As an English/Italian couple living in the States, we know that modern conveniences, such as wireless internet, a washer and dryer are important to our guests and we provide many extras, including our insider tips to places of interest.
Although you may be tempted to spend your vacation just soaking up the local atmosphere in town, there are numerous charming hill towns within an easy 30 to 45 minute drive away. The main Rome-Florence highway is 15 minutes from Cetona and the train station of Chiusi is only 10 minutes. From Chiusi there is a regular service to Rome and Florence. Trains also go to Cortona, Siena, Arezzo and many other lovely places.
The apartment has an interesting history, it has been a convent, town offices and many other things from the the mid 1700s. The coffered ceilings, frescoes and many other features are typical of the houses of nobility of those times. Located on the second floor (US), or what Italians call the 'piano nobile' (where nobles lived) it consists of a huge room comprising kitchen/ dining/ living room with original terracotta tiles, and two windows looking onto the piazza. The long refectory-style table is pefect for get-togethers of up to ten people. Oriental rugs and the marvellous frescoed walls make you feel as if you are in another age.
Across the handsome entry hall, there is a study, three bedrooms and two bathrooms. Two bedrooms have a view onto a courtyard garden, the other onto the piazza. One of the bedrooms has an 'ensuite' bathroom, the other bedrooms share a bathroom.
A separate room on the mezzanine contains a washing machine and dryer. There is also a communal terrace overlooking a verdant tranquil courtyard.
Our aim is to make guests feel as if this is their home for the duration of their stay, that's why we supply wi-fi internet access, a printer, an Italian cell phone for local calls,, adapters for your electronics, a washer and dryer, a microwave and anything else we can think of.
If there is anything else you require, we have a lovely friend in Cetona, an American lady, who can answer any questions and provide back up.
For more specific information on the area, go to the tourist office, it is right in the piazza. There you can find a good selection of maps of local hikes and many suggestions of what to do in the area. I'm also happy to suggest tailor made itineraries for excursions to places that will make your stay really unique and memorable.
In the apartment you will find our own 'insider's guide'. Many guests have commented that they have found our recommendations have been key to their enjoyment of Cetona and neighbouring towns.

About Philippa Mannino
Hello, I am Philippa Mannino. My husband, Gaetano, is Italian, I am English. We met in Rome when Gaetano was in his last year of university and I was working for the UN. Since we married, we have moved continually between Italy and the US. We now live in Connecticut. We have friends and family spread throughout Italy, and chose Tuscany for its magical countryside and central location. Although we know the area very well, we are constantly making new discoveries that we are happy to share with our guests.
Philippa Mannino purchased this Apartment in 2007
Why Philippa Mannino chose Cetona
Over the years we came to know Tuscany well and found that it was an excellent meeting point for friends we had made in various parts of Italy and Europe. Besides, who can turn down an invitation to stay in Tuscany! We used to stay in the glorious countryside of the Val d'Orcia area of Tuscany, but Cetona is much more convenient being a 15 minute drive from the Rome-Florence highway. The countryside is beautiful and Cetona is never swamped with tourists the way many other Tuscan towns are. Another convenience is the excellent rail service from Chiusi (10 minutes away) to just about anywhere in Italy.
What makes this Apartment unique
We fell in love with the wide sweep of Piazza Garibaldi and revel in being at the centre of an ever changing canvas of activity. Our windows onto the piazza are the best seats in the house. So much goes on in our piazza: festivals, dinners, religious events. It is such a treat not to have to get in the car to go to the grocery store; everything is on our doorstep. The weekly market on Saturday mornings provide an occasion to buy everything from the freshest produce to the latest fashions.

Dolce Casa. What a perfect name for this delicious hideaway. The apartment is so lovely and the views onto the piazza so enchanting that I hardly knew what to take in first. We spent one week in this delightful apartment, which came with all the comforts of home, including a full kitchen, comfortable beds, nice hot water when we wanted it, and excellent water pressure in the showers. With its warm, earth toned color scheme, beamed and hand-painted ceilings, beautiful yet inviting antique furniture, and whimsical touches — a red refrigerator and a yellow and white striped objet d’art bathtub — the accommodations and both elegant and fun. The owners provided everything we needed, from sight-seeing tips to extra linen, a dishwasher, washer and dryer, a hair dryer, and excellent information about the town. Clearly, they love their apartment and its picture-perfect surroundings. Speaking of the town, Cetona is an intimate, unspoiled hill town dating back to prehistoric times. The first time we walked into the central piazza, which is right under Dolce Casa’s windows, I felt transported. I know that’s a cliché, but clichés are often based in reality, and the reality of Cetona is transporting. A medieval village with Etruscan roots, it’s centrally located in the southeast corner of Tuscany, just a short drive to Arezzo, Pienza, Montepuiciano, Montalcino, Cortona, Orvieto, and towns in Umbria as well. We visited archeological sites, museums, gardens, churches, and markets. There’s plenty to do and see, whether you like hiking, photography, birdwatching, or discovering the local flora, and our evening strolls were magical. The restaurants and cafés were excellent, the coffee delicious, and the hometown wine, cheese, and olive oil as good as any. (Be sure to try pici, a regional fresh pasta.) But wherever we went and whatever we saw, we were always happy to come home to Cetona. Whiling away an evening in Piazza Garibaldi, listening to people chatting and laughing at the café, watching kids playing soccer or learning to ride bikes, and hearing the church bells ringing in the hour…It was serene, sweet, and unforgettable. Grazie, Dolce Casa and Cetona!
Perfect for a one week stay for two couples. Close to everything. Lovely apartment.
We were two couples staying in this luxurious and very comfortable large apartment located in the main square of Cetona. Everything was at our fingertips, including excellent restaurants, cafes, food markets, lovely walks on narrow streets surrounded by magnificent buildings hundreds of years old. The apartment has lots of tall windows that open on to the square, but it's very quiet, even serene. We were 30 minutes from several incredible hill towns of Tuscany. A beautiful, magical place.
Thank you for your nice remarks. The apartment is indeed strategically located and we really enjoy being in the heart of this charming, unspoilt Tuscan town. A week is not nearly long enough to enjoy it to the full - please come back for a return visit!
Beautiful spacious apartment on lovely piazza
The apartment is truly stunning. This was my second visit and the location is perfect for exploring Tuscany and Umbria. The position on the piazza is great. The square has two friendly bars, and takes you to cobbled alleys around the old town, and in turn to paths through the surrounding (very picturesque) countryside. This is an ideal location for painting, walking, dining, wine tasting. We made two trips on this trip to different spas. The first was Chianciano Terme, a spa and wellness centre heated by natural springs http://www.termechianciano.it/. Next, we ventured to a natural spa, in the woods at Fosso Bianco - Bagni San Filippo (see http://www.theguardian.com/travel/2010/may/01/italy-tuscany-natural-hot-springs). This was an amazing unique experience. It involved a little scrambling, so only for the sure-footed. Car hire is a convenient way to get around but local buses run between Cetona and Chiusi (local train station) and we made use of this. On departing the flat we took the sleeper train to Venice, (convenient for low cost flights from Venice to Leeds-Bradford). The apartment itself is very tastefully and thoughtfully furnished. Everything you could need is here, from washer-dryer, dishwasher to elegant bathrooms, study, exquisite open dining kitchen living space - with hand painted 'trompe l'oeil' detailing and characterful bedrooms. I would highly recommend this as a holiday let for either a family holiday (our situation), romantic getaway, group visit, painting or writing retreat, or site seeing. The owner was very helpful, for example, giving us useful information about the local spas, wine-tasting, restaurants, walks and transport options. Thanks, we had a wonderful time !
Huge Apartment in Quintessential Piazza
A beautiful, comfy, fully equipped, (HUGE) apartment in the middle of a quintessential piazza bordering Umbria & Tuscany. We were there in the middle of summer when it was very hot, but the apartment never became uncomfortable because of the 3 huge ceiling fans in the living room that saved us from the outside heat. The a/c in one of the bedrooms was a nice added touch for my heat-sensitive husband. This apartment is literally above a coffee shop/bakery/dance party w/live dj's at night. On a few nights we opened the windows to people watch from the apartment and saw a group of people dancing and singing to the music. It was like the party was in our house and my 2 little boys started dancing in the living room (as did we). When it was time for them to go to bed we simply closed the windows and you could not hear one single thing. Very thick windows. There's a grocery store about a 5 minute walk away, 2 coffee shops in the piazza, a handful of decent restaurants, bakeries, fresh meat and fruit/vegetable stores, and a wine store that sold wine for as little as 2 euros sold in a plain bottle without labels. It wasn't very good, but they also had other really good wines for like 6 euros a bottle. Parking is about 5 min. away from the apartment. We didn't want to leave. Could have easily stayed another week or 2 exploring the alleyways, and backstreets of old Cetona.
painting in tuscany and umbria

Home Away From Home
Wonderful Palazzo in the center of Cetona on the main Piazza. Accessible to all major areas of Tuscany. Great way to experience a small town atmosphere with all the possible amenities available. Multiple restaurants within the Piazza as well as shops, local small needs and local wine by the litre for less than 2 Euros. Take advantage of the wonderful restaurants within 2 miles of the town center also. Would return whenever possible - simply lovely.
The Val di Chiana area is known for its olive oil, wines and its very special grass-fed beef used for the famous 'bistecca fiorentina' (Florentine steak). Etruscan tombs and artifacts are a feature of Chiusi, which is about 10 minutes from Cetona. In the hills surrounding Cetona, there is a network of caves with remnants from the bronze age. Cave tours take place throughout the year.
